CPR/AED For Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers Frequently Asked Questions
LIFEGUARDING-RELATED
Q. Which CPR/AED content should Lifeguarding instructors use when teaching the Lifeguarding
course?
A. Lifeguarding instructors should continue to teach the CPR/AED as currently outlined in the Lifeguarding
Instructors Manual. After a lifeguard is certified in the current program, he or she can then take the
updated CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers course (full or review) if desired or
required by an employer.
Q. What is the validity period for the CPR/AED certificate for individuals who have successfully
completed the Lifeguarding course?
A. For any courses completed on or after January 1, 2011, all CPR/AED certificates are valid for 2 years. It is
important to understand that the 2 year validity period is not retroactive to include courses that were
completed prior to January 1, 2011.
Q. Has the validity period of the Lifeguarding certificate changed? Is it still 3 years even though the
validity period of CPR/AED is now 2 years?
A. As part of the overall review of validity periods for CPR/AED training, all CPR/AED are valid for 2 years,
including for lifeguards. To keep knowledge and skills sharp, lifeguards should be encouraged to take the
quarterly CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers refreshers. The refreshers are
available at http://www.redcrossrefresher.com/.
The Lifeguarding program is currently under revision. The certificate length is being considered as part of
the revision. For now, the validity period of the Lifeguarding/First Aid certificate remains at 3 years.
Q. Should Lifeguarding instructors wait to do the update to the revised Lifeguarding program when it
releases, or should they take the CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers
update now?
A. The changes to CPR skills are minimal. Waiting is acceptable. If Lifeguarding instructors would like to teach
the new CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers course as a stand-alone offering
(not related to a Lifeguarding course), he or she should obtain the new materials and complete the online
CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers update. Lifeguarding instructors should
not try to incorporate the new CPR/AED content into the Lifeguarding courses.
PROGRAM ADMINISTRATION
Q. Is there a cost to download the multimedia presentation?
A. No.
Q. Is there a cost for on-line instructor update and quick start instructor training?
A. There is no cost for the online instructor update or quick start instructor training. Chapters may charge a
nominal fee if a group orientation is conducted.
Q. If current CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer instructors participate in a group orientation to
update to the new program, do they have to take the online assessment to finalize their instructor
authorization?
A. No. Chapters should mark the instructors as successful for the group orientation offering. The new
instructor can then be assigned.
Q. When instructors update online, does someone at the chapter have to enter them into the Learning
Center?
A. Instructors who are in LMS with the old certification for CPR for the Professional Rescuer with a status of
acquired, were automatically assigned the new CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care
Providers certification. After completing the online update, the instructor should also complete the online
verification in the LMS. His or her status will then change from assigned to acquired. There should be no
further action needed.
Q. Can the CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers program be broken into
modules?
A. Because professional rescuers are overwhelmingly expected to be able to respond to any age victim and to
use certain types of lifesaving equipment, there is only one CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and
Health Care Providers course and it covers care for breathing and cardiac emergencies for all ages using
appropriate equipment. As such, instructors should teach this full course as outlined in the instructors
manual. An exception exists for the Walgreens National Account and specifies that participants can be
trained only in Adult CPR/AED skills.
Q. Why is the Fundamentals of Instructor Training course no longer a prerequisite for the instructor
course?
A. Much of the information included in the Fundamentals of Instructor Training course (such as teaching
methodologies and class management strategies) have been incorporated into the instructor course.
Q. How has the instructor course been reduced to be able to offer it in less time?
A. The delivery of the instructor course has been streamlined and designed in a Blended Learning format. A
new online prerequisite introduces instructor candidates to course materials and course content. The online
portion is estimated to take approximately 2 hours. This reduces classroom time because the classroom
session is focused on practice teaching and evaluating skills.
Q. Is the Guide for Training Bloodborne Pathogens: Preventing Disease Transmission Instructors
going to be updated?
A. Yes. The instructor course will not change, but the guide will be updated to reflect the new materials. If a
Bloodborne Pathogens Training Instructor course is scheduled, instructor trainers can use the r.03 version
that is currently on CrossNet.
COURSE MATERIALS
Q. Which participant materials are required in class?
A. Each participant must have a copy of the CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers
Handbook, either in hard copy or electronic version, for use during class. The handbook must be provided
