An investigation found an air leak in the coupling between the motor and water line pipe, which caused the pump to lose prime, run dry, and overheat. The overload protection of the 2Hp motor was not properly set for the motor's full load amps or lacked overload protection. This led to overheating over time and breaking down of the motor's thin wire insulation. The options are to get a new motor or rewind the damaged one.

Madam:
Upon investigation of the cause of motor burnt of the 2Hp water pump on the REPD bldg., it is
found that there is an air leak in the coupling between the motor and the water line pipe. The leak
cause the pump to lose prime, run dried then eventually overheated.
The following recommendations:
1. 60A Circuit breaker should be replaced by a 30A.
2. Asdf
3. Asdf
4. Asdf
5.
The overload protection of the 2Hp motor in the REPD has not been
equipment has not been set up properly to reflect the full load amps of the motor or not having
any overload protection at all. In an overload condition the motor builds up heat. Over time this
heat breaks down the wire insulation in the motor. The wiring inside a motor is covered with a
varnish insulation which is very thin and becomes brittle with heat. Once the insulation breaks
down due to the heat the windings will short open or short circuit. At this point there are two
options, get a new motor or get the damaged motor rewound. On smaller motors, the cost of a
rewind could be more than that of a new motor.
