A local area network (LAN) connects computers within a small physical area like a building, while a wide area network (WAN) connects computers over a larger geographical distance such as between buildings. A metropolitan area network (MAN) covers an area larger than a LAN but smaller than a WAN. The document discusses that a school network would be considered a LAN. Network protocols define communication standards between devices on a network, with the most common being Ethernet, LocalTalk, Token Ring, FDDI, and ATM. Ethernet uses CSMA/CD and is the most widely used today.

Comm Tech 2104 Assignment 3.

1
Local Area Network (LAN): A relatively small computer network, often confined to a room,
building, or group of building. Several LANs can be connected with telephone lines and radio
waves.
Wide Area Network (WAN): A network extending a large geographical distance. The computers
in the network can be far apart. These networks often have a radius of a half-mile or greater,
and generally consist of two or more LANs.
Metropolitan Area Network (MAN): A network covering an area larger than a LAN, but smaller
than a WAN.
Our school network should be considered a LAN, since it is a relatively small network confined
to a single building.
Advantages of installing a school network are: access to internet and services, information
storing and sharing, user access control, and access to computing resources.
Disadvantages of installing a school network are: expensive to install, administrative time
required, maintenance, and security issues.
A network protocol are the standards and policies made from rules, procedures and formats the
define communication between two or more devices over a network.
The five most common network protocols are: Ethernet, Local Talk, Token Ring, FDDI, and ATM.
Ethernet is the most common one. It uses an access method called CSMA/CD. Each computer
listens to the cable before sending any data. If it is clear, the computer will send data.
Local Talk was made by Apple for Mac computers. The method used is called CSMA/CA. In this
method, a computer signals its to send data before doing so. A disadvantage of this protocol is
its slow speed, only 230 Kbps.
Token Ring was invented by IBM in the 1980s. The computers are connected so that data
travels computer to computer in a logical ring. It has speed of 4 Mbps or 16 Mbps. The
popularity of ethernet has decreased the use of the Token Ring.
FDDI is primarily used to connect two or more LAN networks. The access method involved
token passing. A advantage of this protocol is the high speed, operating at 100 Mbps.
ATM is a protocol that transmits data at 155 Mbps or higher. It works by transmitting data in
small packets.
