Chapter 10 - The Design Process

This document summarizes the design process. It outlines the two main types of design - artistic design and engineering design. Artistic design focuses on content and form, while engineering design focuses on form and function. Engineering design has two main categories - system design and product design. The engineering design process involves 8 steps: identifying the problem, researching the problem, creating solutions, selecting/refining solutions, modeling the solution, testing the solution, communicating the solution, and improving the solution. A design brief outlines the problem statement and constraints/criteria. Solutions are created through brainstorming and ideation. Renderings, sketches, models, mock-ups and prototypes are used to develop and communicate solutions. Sustainable design complies with social

The Design Process

Jordan Sneade

What are the two types of design?

(List and define)

Artistic Design: is the type of design artistics

normally do.
Engineering Design is used to create plans for
solutions.

On which two aspects of design does

artistic design focus? (List and define)
Content: Trying to communicate information
or emotion.
Form: how the solution looks or sounds.

On which two aspects of design does

engineering design focus? (List and define)
Form: How the solution looks or sounds.
Function: how the solution works.

What are the two main categories of

engineering design? (List and define)
System Design: involves organizing different
parts to solve a problem.
Product Design: is the creation of products
meeting human needs and wants.

What are the eight steps of the

Engineering Design Process?

Identify the problem

Research the problem
Creating solutions for the problem
Selecting and refining the solutions
Modeling the solution
Testing the solution
Communicating the Solution
Improving the solution

What is a Design Brief? (Use the following words in

your explanation: problem statement, constraints, criteria)

The problem statement is one part of a

document called the design brief.

How are solutions created? (Use the following

words in your explanation: ideation, graphic organizers, rough
sketches, pictorial sketches)

Solutions are generated when people are free

to take risks and make mistakes.
Brainstorming at this stage is often a team
effort in which people from different
disciplines are involved in generating multiple
solutions to the problem.

What is rendering? (Use the internet to find an

example of a rendering and paste it on this slide.)

the processing of an outline image using color

and shading to make it appear solid and threedimensional.

What is a detailed sketch? (Use the internet to

find an example of a detailed sketch and paste it on this slide.)

A drawing, at relatively large scale, of a part of

a building, machine, etc., with dimensions or
other information for use in construction.

What is a model and what is its

purpose in the engineering design
process?

Models can be used to communicate ideas,

experiment with concepts, and organize data.
It helps seeing how the solution can work.

What is the difference between a

mock-up and a prototype?
A mock up doesn't do anything but show off
looks .
A prototype works just like the actual solution
would.

What is sustainable design? (page 232)

Sustainable design is designing physical
objects, the built environment, and services to
comply with the principles of social,
economic, and ecological sustainability.

This slide is simply an example of how to complete the slides that follow. You do
not have to do anything to this slide!
