    Classroom
    Donations

    We are running low on a few


    supplies we use frequently in
    the classroom. Any donations
    of the following items would be
    GREATLY appreciated!

    Valentines Day
    Your child is welcome to bring in valentines to
    pass out to his/her classmates on Tuesday,
    February 14th. We will devote the last half hour
    of the day to passing out valentines and enjoying a small treat.
    Passing out valentines is optional, however, if your child is
    planning on bringing valentines to school, please be sure to
    have him/her write one out for each student in our class.
    Giving a valentine to each person in the class supports our
    classroom rules and expectations of mutual respect toward all of
    our classmates. Below is a class list to assist your child in
    writing out valentines:

    card for the second card marking.

    soon as possible so envelopes can be
    reused throughout the year. Thanks

    Curriculum-at-a-Glance
    Math

    We just finished our unit on data collection in math. Our next


    unit focuses on nonstandard and standard measurement. At the
    beginning of the unit, students will use nonstandard units such as
    paper clips and unifix cubes to develop accurate measurement
    techniques when measuring length, and as we progress through
    the unit students will learn how to use inch tiles to solve
    problems about comparing lengths. Toward the end of the unit,
    students will continue to develop their understanding of
    measurement as we move into measuring distances.

    Writing

    We have finished our how-to books and have been working on


    publishing them! Next week, we will also begin a new unit
    about persuasive letter writing. Over the next couple weeks we
    will be developing our understanding of persuasive writing by
    studying persuasive letters in order to learn about their purpose
    and structure. After we learn about persuasive letters, students
    will generate a list of problems or social issues that theyd like
    to try to persuade someone to take action about or change their
    thinking about, and after selecting a topic for their persuasive
    letters, students will begin writing first drafts of their letters.

    Reading

    We just finished our study of non-fiction by learning how to


    communicate effectively with our classmates in a book club setting.
    Students learned that book clubs talk about their books, ask and
    answer questions about their books, and discuss parts of their
    books that may have been confusing. During independent reading,
    all students selected a part of their non-fiction book they wanted to
    share with their book club, and following independent reading
    students met in book clubs to discuss their reading and learn from
    one another. Meeting in book clubs was an effective way for
    students to explore their interests as non-fiction readers and share
    their interests with others!

    Social
    Studies

    Next week we will start a new unit on being a good citizen. In this
    unit, students will learn about what it means to be a good citizen
    both at home and in school by exploring various characteristics of
    good citizens. We will learn about rules and responsibilities and
    will examine the similarities and differences between rules at home
    and at school. We will also learn about what the terms power,
    authority, and fairness mean in relation to being a good
    citizen. As a culmination of our learning, students will learn about
    important symbols of the United States such as the American eagle
    and American flag.
