INTRODUCTION
The word Institute comes from the Latin word institutum meaning facility or habit from instituere meaning
build, create, raise or educate . Institute is an organization having a particular purpose especially one
that is involved with science, education or a specific profession.
Design usually considered in the context of applied arts, engineering, architecture and other creative endeavors,
is used as both as a noun and an verb. As a verb. To design refers to the process of originating and developing
a plan for a product, structure, system or component.
Design is systematic, as it involves the analysis of problems in our physical environment and the transformation
of findings into appropriate and usable solutions.
WHAT IS NID?

The national institute of design (NID) is internationally acclaimed as one of the foremost multi-disciplinary
institutions in the field of design education and research.
NID has been recognized by the Dept. of Scientific & Industrial Research (DSIR) under Ministry of Science &
Technology, Government of India, as a scientific and industrial design research organization.
NID today is premier design hotspot of the country providing research service and training in industrial design
and visual communication.
Much of the learning is through a process of internship and relationship between the teacher and student is
powerfully reinforced by the harsh tests which practice provides.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND OF NID

The establishment of NID was a result of several forces, both global and local. The late 1950s saw a
confluence of these forces, and this time would be a significant one for Indian culture and education. This
was a time of reappraisal and reconstruction in a newly independent India.
A young nation was confronted with the mammoth task of nation building, of balancing age old traditions
with modern technology and ideas.
In 1955 Pupul Jayaker, the noted writer on Indian craft traditions and the founder of the Indian Handlooms
and Handicrafts Export Council (HHEC) met the renowned American designer Charles Eames at the
Museum of Modern Art in New York.
The Museum had organised a unique exhibition titled The Textiles and Ornamental Arts of India. This
would be the beginning of a lifelong dialogue between these two eminent individuals.
At the same time the Government of India was considering establishing an institute of design, under the
advice of Pupul Jayaker and other like-minded people.
The 1950s were a decade of rapid industrialization in India and clearly, the need for such an institute grew
stronger.
In 1957 the Government of India requested the Ford Foundation to invite Charles and Ray Eames to visit
India. Charles and Ray Eames travelled to all parts of the country, meeting and talking to writers,
craftspeople, architects, scientists, industrialists, educators and philosophers. They took hundreds of
photographs of their travels.

On April 7, 1958, the Eameses presented the India Report to the Government of India. The Eames Report
defined the underlying spirit that would lead to the founding of NID and beginning of design education in
India.
The Report recommended a problem-solving design consciousness that linked learning with actual
experience and suggested that the designer could be a bridge between tradition and modernity. The Report
called upon future designers to re-examine the alternatives of growth available to the country at that time.
Based on the recommendations made in the India Report, the Government of India with the assistance of
the Ford Foundation and the Sarabhai family established the National Institute of Industrial Design, as it
was originally called as an autonomous all-India body in September 1961 at Ahmedabad.
Gautam Sarabhai and his sister Gira were played a major role in the establishment and early years of NID.
Gautam Sarabhai sidestepped the accepted wisdom and conventional method of education .
He revived the philosophy of the Bauhaus design movement which was learning by doing. This unique
curriculum and revolutionary educational philosophy remain part of NID to the present day.
Today the National Institute of Design is internationally acclaimed as one of the finest educational and
research institutions for Industrial, Communication, Textile and IT Integrated (Experiential) Design.
It is an autonomous institution under the aegis of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of
India.
NID has been declared Institution of National Importance by the Act of Parliament, by virtue of the
National Institute of Design Act 2014.

NID offers professional education programme in the following streamIndustrial design

o This includes product design, furniture and interior design, ceramic and glass design.
Communication design
o This includes graphic design, animation film design.
Textile and apparel design

NEED OF NID

Designing is often regarded as a visionary activity. So in our day to day life we have to discard our old
projects and replace it by new once. For this we have to invent new products by assistance with
consumers, manufacturers, advisors and designers.
Designers must recognize that what is right for some people may be drastically wrong for others.
For this solution is just a machine and new technology makes life easier while art and craft are used to
lend color variety and expression of life. But one difference mass manufactured product from the craft
object, is that one seeks to distinguish the reality of labor while others breaks monotony of life.
Design is special contribution to make in the process of transition from tradition to modernity.

SCOPE OF NID

If we look at the current scenario in India we can count the number of design schools we have on
fingers. We have the NID at Ahmedabad and IDC at IIT Powai. IIT Kanpur. IIT Delhi IIT Guwahati and
IISC Bangalore too have their own small design departments.
These design schools are not enough to cater the needs of 1 billion people in India and several billion
people abroad.

Most people dont even understand the term design. For understanding the process of design and that
will make another step forward in the direction of role of architecture in design education.

AIM

To develop design curricula which best support the development of the creative industries in India
through the nurturing of talents, and which can adapt to support a through train for design education
with emphasis on fundamental knowledge and skills, while promoting a closer synergy with secondary
schools and collaboration with regional and international institutes.
To enable the students to develop a sense of social and professional commitments.
To provide through understanding of technical, managerial and design fundamentals along with a strong
exposure to real life situations so that they are able to experience how the intellectual, creative and other
skills acquired could be adopted to benefit the user, society and industry.
To promote design awareness and application towards raising the quality of life.
To provide design intervention for craft, handloom, rural technology, small, medium and large scale
enterprises and outreach programs for capability and institutions building and sustainable livelihood,
employment opportunities and economic growth.
To network with industries, professional bodies, government agencies and non profit organizations to
ensure relevance and responsiveness of its programs and to gain recognition and endorsement of
industries through close collaboration in specific domain areas.
