Seismic Modification Factor Calculation As Per UBC97

The document provides calculations to determine the seismic modification factor for a non-building pipe support structure according to UBC-97. It calculates the total design lateral seismic force Fp as 0.21 times the weight of the pipe Wp. It then shows the STAAD base shear is 0.1 times the weight. Dividing the UBC seismic force by the STAAD base shear gives a seismic modification factor of 2.13.

SEISMIC MODIFICATION FACTOR

(As per UBC 1997)

Pipe supports are supported over concrete platform, hence, is considered as non-building structure.
Thus, calculation of seismic force modification factor according to UBC-97 is presented below:
Total Design Lateral Seismic Force:
Fp = (ap * Ca * Ip / Rp) * (1 + 3 hx/hr) W p
ap =

1.0

In-structure component amplification factor (Table 16-O, item 2.B(2))

Seismic coefficient for Seismic Zone 1, Z=0.075 & Soil Profile between S D & SE

Ca =

0.16

Ip =

1.0

(interpolated value of UBC-Table 16-Q and as per Table 21 of the below reference)
Importance factor (Table 16-K)

Rp =

3.0

Component response modification factor (Table 16-O, item 2.B(2))

ELFGL =

100.0

Elevation - Finished Ground Level

ELTOS =

108.3

Elevation - Top of Steel of Pipe Support

hx =

8.3

Element or component attachment elevation with respect to grade (hx = ELTOS - ELFGL)

hr =

8.3

Structure roof elevation with respect to grade (h r = hx)

Fp =

0.21

m
Wp

where; W p : Weight of the component/element

In STAAD seismic load factor has been modified to apply F p of 0.21Wp.

STAAD calculated base shear as:
FSTAAD =
Seismic Modification Factor =
Seismic Modification Factor =

0.1 Wp
0.21/0.1
2.13
