Math 3-1

The document outlines a math lesson plan for adding numbers within 100 using a hundred chart. The objective is for students to add using place value strategies and a hundred chart. The teacher will demonstrate adding numbers like 27+10 on a large hundred chart. Students will then complete similar addition problems independently using a small hundred chart. They will also solve word problems and fill in missing digits in addition equations using patterns on the hundred chart. The lesson aims to build number sense through visual patterns on the hundred chart.

Subject: Math: 3-1 Add Tens and Ones on a Hundred Chart

Common Core Standard(s):
Number and Operations in Base Ten 2.NBT
Use place value understanding and properties of operations to add and
subtract.
5. Fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value,
properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.
Procedure:

3-1

Add Tens and Ones on a Hundred Chart

Objective: Add within 100 using place-value strategies and a hundred
chart
Essential Understanding: Patterns on a hundred chart can be used to
add numbers and to develop mental math strategies and number
sense.

Materials

pencils
3-1 Math Pages
Doc camera/projector
Hundred chart
clipboards
Dry erase marker/eraser
Whole group on large rug with white boards, dry erase
markers/erasers, 100 chart.
Teacher will show a large hundreds chart on the board. The
teacher will ask students to find what 27+10 equals using the
hundred chart.
Then 44+20, 35+26, 63+34
Students are asked How can you use the hundred chart to help
you find 32+43? Explain. Write and equation to show the sum
o If you are at 32 on the hundred chart, which way do you
move to get to 42? (down one row)
o Where is the number that is 40 more than 32? (four rows
down from 32)
Students back at their desks/tables with math packets
Students are given 4 problems and a small part of a hundreds
chart and asked to use the chart to add.
Do you Understand? How can you use a hundred chart to find
53+24?

Independen
t Practice

Students are given 7 addition problems and asked to add using

the hundred chart.
Higher order thinking Write the digit that makes each equation
true
- Students have to fill in an empty box in the tens or ones place
in 4 equations to make the equation true. Ex. 1+51=67,
students have to fill in 6

Solving

Review independent work

o Encourage students to look for patterns in the equations
Math Practices and Problem Solving Use the hundred chart to
solve the problems students are again given part of a hundreds
chart. They have to solve two word problems using the chart.
Higher Order Thinking Write the steps you take to add 43 and
39 on a hundred chart (students can use the chart above for
reference)
Assessment Which weights will balance the weights already on
the scale? Use a hundred chart to help (could use the one on the
solve and share page.) Scale has the numbers 10 and 25 on
one side. Students are given four sets of 2 numbers. So students
must add the 10+25 and then the other sets of numbers to figure
out if they equal each other

Plans for differentiation:

The math sheets have a 100 chart built in, but some students might need a
laminated version or one in a sleeve to move around in with a dry erase marker.
Might need to check in with lower level reading students while they are completing
the guided practice or read the problems aloud to the whole group, making sure
they are following along for understanding.
Assessment:
Observation
Math packet
Plans for accommodation/modification:
There is one student with an IEP that is low in reading and math. Some reading
that might be tricky for her. The teacher will read aloud the directions to the whole
group and check in with her often.
Whats next?
Topic 3-2: Add Tens on an Open Number Line
