DURING Open House New York,

the sprawling, sparkling metropolis of New York gathers professionals, interested members of
the public and some 800 volunteers for the annual weekend of
tours, walks, and talks on architecture and all things related.
For the 13th event, the newly

renovated City Hall is included,
as is Googles office in Chelsea.
Arranged by a non-profit organization, the goal of the weekend
is to open up spaces that the general public doesnt normally have
access to.
One of the most-visited sites

during the past four years has
been the TWA Flight Terminal at
JFK Airport. The architectural
masterpiece was designed by
Eero Saarinen and opened in
1962, but was taken out of
service in 2001.

and into mainstream culture, the Amsterdam Dance Event
(ADE) has gained even greater importance. Join the worlds

Industry representatives come for the conference program, which
dissects many aspects
of modern day music
production. But most of
all, its about dancing.

an exhibition called Utopian
Bodies Fashion Looks Forward.This ambitious show

At 24 years old, Magnus Carlsen is the worlds best chess player.
He became a Grandmaster at 13 and has been proclaimed a genius
throughout the world. So what drives Carlsen? We met up with
him in New York to find out

He destroyed me slowly. Like a
cobra.
Its a specialty of his. Magnus
Carlsen is more than a genius. I dont have the words
to describe him.
Its 30C and sticky. Were sitting on red leather
sofas in the legendary Marshall Chess Club in
Greenwich Village, and the atmosphere is charged
with excitement. Charged with history. This is the
place where Bobby Fischer shone. Where Stanley
Kubrick and Howard Stern were bamboozled. The
open windows let in the scent of cherry blossom.
Carlsen has taken off his jacket. Hes been playing
simultaneous games against 12 opponents from
around the world, beating them one after another.
Elite player Giuseppe Lettieri was the opponent who
lasted the longest. For more than an hour, Carlsen
paced between the boards, biting his lip and moving
pieces at lightening speed.
No-one can figure out why hes so good, says

Espen Agdestein, Carlsens manager. He has all the
characteristics you need to play chess, plus a few
more. Its miraculous.
A good memory and an analytical mind are
important. As are extensive practice, the desire to
learn from mistakes and an interest in mastering
new strategies. Espen Diretrichs, a brain expert and
professor of neurology, says strong motivation in
one particular area can develop the brain to
extremes. Carlsens creative artistry has earned
him the nickname the Mozart of chess.

I usually surprise my opponents, Carlsen says.

I like creativity in chess. But perhaps the most
important reason for my success is that I enjoy
reading about chess theory and chess history and
I remember what I read.
Carlsen is convinced that talent hunters should
look for those who are extremely interested, not just
those who find things easy.
Look at Kasparov and Fischer. They were chess
history experts, Carlsen says.
He also believes you have to overestimate your
abilities in order to progress.
Studies show that realists are also prone to
depression. If you dont overestimate your abilities
several times over, you just see dangers and not
possibilities. If you doubt your abilities, youll never
improve.

Carlsen is confident now, but at the age of 13, after

sensationally becoming the youngest ever chess
Grandmaster, he ran into problems. Suddenly,
things just started to go wrong.
I thought it was a combination of bad luck and
making poor choices, he says. In hindsight, I can
see that I just wasnt good enough. If Id been enjoying myself, theres no guarantee that I would have
done what I needed to do to take that next step. If
you dont believe in yourself and have negative
thoughts, it doesnt matter what you can do you
wont be able to put your skills into practice.
The previous day, Carlsen was spellbinding
several thousand business leaders at the Sohn
Conference at New Yorks Lincoln Center. Wearing
a blindfold, and with a clock ticking on stage, he had
to win three games in nine minutes. Gasps of
admiration could be heard from the audience. One
of Carlsens opponents was actor Gbenga Akinnagbe, a star of US crime show The Wire. The other two
were financial heavyweights with excellent chess
skills.
Dont you mean board two? Carlsen asked from
behind the mask when the move from Akinnagbe is
called from board one. Although he couldnt physically see the game, Carlsen was fully aware of what was
going on. Carlsen says he puts each game in a dedicated slot in his brain, rather like a slide projector.

Carlsen. It doesnt feel like working,
he says. Of course its how I earn
money, but I just think about it as a
way to have fun. Sometimes, it feels as
though its my life. Especially at tournaments. The
whole atmosphere. The excitement. I find myself
thinking this is where I want to be. It draws me in!
Following his victory in the World Chess Championship, the elite of the Norwegian sporting world,
including the likes of Petter Northug and Suzann
Pettersen, nominated Carlsen as sports personality
of the year. But unlike many top athletes, he has no
help from a coach.
In the final analysis, I have to rely on myself,
he says. I dont use a mental coach, although that
could be useful, but I dont have problems with

motivation or my approach to games and tournaments. I am highly focused.
However, Carlsen does have some tricks and routines to get the best possible level of performance. If
hes playing in a tournament a few time zones away,
he will arrive 34 days ahead to recover his energy.

Carlsen stays fit through running and yoga, as

well as playing basketball, tennis, and soccer with
friends. This physical regime separated him from
other top players a few years ago. But now, he says,
many of them work out.
Before, I rarely saw other players get on the
treadmill prior to a tournament or have a massage
after the game now its commonplace. The
players are professionals, and theyre concerned
with their physical as well as their mental condition.
If you exercise, you get more energy, and that
will take you further in long games and tournaments.

SCANDINAVIAN TRAVELER EXAMINES WRITING
n August this year, the fourth installment in

Stieg Larssons Millennium series, The Girl in
the Spiders Web, hit the bookstores. But it was
penned entirely by David Lagercrantz, a writer best known for his biography of Swedish
soccer star Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
The decision to publish a fourth book was controversial to say the least. Larsson died in 2004 without
leaving a will, so the rights to his books went to his
father and brother. Larssons long-term partner Eva
Gabrielsson, with whom he lived for 32 years, was
strongly against the publication of a new book.
At stake was not just Stieg Larssons literary
legacy, but also large sums of money. Although publishers tend to keep the value of total book sales
secret, Larssons publishers have stated that by
March 2015, his three books had sold more than 80
million copies in 30 languages. The Swedish newspaper Dagens Industri has estimated that these sales
amount to approximately USD 480 million. If sales
go as planned for the new book, its publisher and
Larssons estate can expect to earn millions more.
Continuing the book series of a dead author is
nothing new the strengthening of copyright laws
over the years has enabled publishers and estates to
continue publishing books series long after the
death of the original author. Theres even a name for
these books: continuation literature. And you only
need to look at the James Bond series of books and
movies to see how lucrative the continuation can be.
Between 1953 and 1966, Ian Fleming wrote 14
James Bond novels, starting with Casino Royale and
ending with Octopussy and The Living Daylights.
Since Flemings death, his estate has authorized an
additional 24 books written by six different authors,
leading to a total of 100 million books sold. The
James Bond film franchise has earned more than
USD 6 billion. Theres no end in sight for James
Bond. Trigger Mortis was published in September
this year, written by novelist and screenwriter
Anthony Horowitz and based on original material
by Ian Fleming. The new novel takes place two
weeks after the events of Goldfinger and brings back
the character Pussy Galore.
It was always my intention to go back to the true

Bond, which is to say, the Bond that Fleming
created, Horowitz has stated. It was a fantastic
bonus having some original, unseen material from
the master to launch my story. I hope fans enjoy it.

lthough its always tempting for publishers to keep on with a successful

book series, Horowitz makes a crucial
point: the fans have to like it, and this
often hinges on how well the writer
captures the original authors voice.
Difficulties occur when a writer takes on the work
of an author with a very distinctive style. One example is Robert B. Parkers revival of Raymond
Chandlers Philip Marlowe novels, written with the
approval of Chandlers estate, which received a
mixed critical reception.
Parkers role in continuation literature did not end
there, however. At the time of his death in 2010,
Parker had sold more than 15 million books, and his
family wanted to keep his Spenser private detective
series alive.
Spenser was a cash cow, Parkers wife Joan told
The Globe in a 2012 interview. And we felt that Bob
would want to see Spenser live on.
After a careful search, the family found author
Ace Atkins, a longtime Parker fan who was thrilled
to continue the series. He has now written four successful novels in the Spenser series, including the
best-selling Kickback, published in May this year. In
a recent interview with The Day, Atkins described
the difficulties he encountered in getting Parkers
tone right.
Theres an ongoing flow and cadence thats very
difficult to pull off, he said. Im not sure all my
readers realize it, but at the root of what they really
like about the Spenser books is the rhythm of the
words. Of course the plot is always interesting.
Youre telling a story. I was a fan myself, and for me
it was never about the case Spenser was working on.
It was about that poetry of language.

something different in the new
Millennium book. Lagercrantz
was well aware of the danger of trying to impersonate Stieg Larsson.
Stieg Larsson was a master at creating complex
stories with a lot of different plotlines, and that was
something I was determined to live up to, Lagercrantz wrote in a statement. [His writing style] is
down to earth and unaffected. But there is a kind of
journalistic authoritativeness about his work. I realized early on how idiotic it would be for me just to
imitate him. This is my own prose.
The choice of Lagercrantz for the fourth book has
been heavily criticized by Eva Gabrielsson, Larssons long-term partner. In an interview with AFP,
she stated that Lagercrantz comes from a completely different background. Everything has always
been easy for him. Hes never been an activist.
Everything is wrong. She also stated she was afraid
Larssons political agenda would be neglected.
Eva Gedin, the editor at publisher Norstedts
responsible for the Millennium series, argues that
politics was not Larssons main motivation for

was having a lot of fun and was very clear that it was
for entertainment. Stiegs intention was that it
would be a huge success.

When Quercus bought the English-language rights

to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo in 2007, it was a
small, independent publisher operating from a
rented office. Three years later, its sales had more
than trebled thanks to the Millennium books.

Over its long history, Assouline has grown from a
marginal publisher of style-driven titles to a lifestyle
luxury brand that seeks to elevate the humble book
into a covetable accessory. The newly established
company created something of a stir with the
release of its first complete series of books in 1996.
Covering influential people and movements in fashion, art, design, and gastronomy, the books in the
Memories collection were beautifully made, yet the
prices were modest. But this approach posed a few
challenges.
Since we priced the books low, Assouline says,
we had to sell considerable volumes in order to
make any profit. Fortunately, there was enough
demand for us to distribute the titles worldwide,
translating them into 10 different languages. Other
publishers then cottoned on to the format and began
to see the commercial relevance of fashion books.
Assouline soon made a name for itself in Europe,
and opened an office in New York at the end of the
1990s, despite being virtually unknown in America
at the time. In 2005, the first boutique opened in
Paris. Today, Assouline operates boutiques in locations including New York, Seoul, Lima, Mexico City,
Istanbul, and Geneva.

hen Maria Black launched her

business, she saw a gap in the
market. There were basically
two alternatives for the consumer:
fashion jewelry and traditional
jewelry houses. There was grungy jewelry, and there
was fine jewelry. Black wanted to bridge the gap.
She would create jewelry with attitude, but using
precious metals.
The idea was immediately successful, and Black
worked all hours to satisfy demand in the early days.
I worked myself almost to death that first year,
she says. I did everything myself from production
to marketing and website design. I realized I made
4,000 pieces of jewelry in that first year!
Maria Black Jewellery works in the same way as a
fashion house, with new collections launched each

I learned to build up a collection by being in

direct contact with customer preferences, she says.
I fine-tuned my ideas, taking inspiration from
Camden and the punks there. But I realized I had to
make things that were more sophisticated.
One of Blacks main ideas is to give people scope
to vary their accessories.
Many people dont want to have the same look all
the time. They might want to be Goth one day and
bohemian the next. To have different looks for different moods. My jewelry gives this kind of flexibility.
I think thats one of the reasons Ive done so well.
Blacks love affair with jewelry was sparked by
travel.
I traveled a great deal when I was in my twenties, she says, spending time in places like Ibiza,
where I began selling jewelry at a hippie market. I
started a four-year apprenticeship in Copenhagen,
but I had itchy feet. In my final year as an apprentice, I went to London. I fell hopelessly in love with
the city and ended up staying.

You need passion for our profession. It takes
time, and its important to sit and talk. I have been
careful to choose the right people with the right
attitude.

In 1929, Swedish pilot and adventurer Gsta Andre flew an
open-cockpit biplane from Sweden to South Africa just to
prove it could be done. SAS pilot Johan Wiklund has
embarked on a similar adventure to prove its still possible

books about the fictional English war
hero Biggles. He dreamed of becoming a pilot and an adventurer. During
his 26 years with SAS, Wiklund has
been all over the world. But one dream has
remained unfulfilled until now: recreating the
remarkable feat Gsta Andre pulled off 86 years
ago. Andre flew a Cirrus Moth biplane from Stockholms Barkaby Airport to the Cape of Good Hope in
South Africa. And back again. Solo.
When I read about Gsta Andre in 2004,
Wiklund says, I thought the trip would happen
when I was retired and had the time and money.
But about 18 months ago, a friend was selling his
1935 De Havilland 60 Moth, so I decided to seize
the opportunity.

As a child, Wiklund built model planes. When he

grew up, he began rebuilding old airplanes. Flying
them, he says, is a chance to discover history
and be truly in control.

rebuilt DH60 Moth when he set out to follow
Andres original route as closely as possible.
He is using the same navigation instruments as
Andre, and even wearing a copy of his flying
outfit. Wiklunds adventure actually started in July
this year, when he flew to Sweden from North Cape
in Norway. He will finish his journey there too.
Its the adventure of a lifetime, but its not
without its potential problems, particularly
because Wiklund has no outside support and
limited resources.
The problems wont happen in the air but on the
ground, he says. Its more and more difficult to get
fuel for a plane like this. Often, only jet fuel is available.
Wiklund added two extra fuel tanks to the plane
because of this.
I may end up going to regular gas stations, filling
up jerry cans and bringing them back to the airport, he says. The idea is to do like Andre: just
me, my brown suit and my airplane. Ill deal with
problems as they happen.

fans of Back to the Future know,
the appropriate question is not
where the hell are we?, its
when the hell are we?
That's what Marty McFly
learns from inventor Emmett
Doc Brown when Doc demonstrates his time machine for the first time in the 1985 film "Back to the
Future", and sends Einstein the dog one minute into
the future in a DeLorean sports car.
By the time the sequel rolled around four years
later, McFly had learned his lesson:
McFly: Where are we? When are we?
Doc: Were descending toward Hill Valley,
California at 4:29 pm, on Wednesday, October 21,
2015.
This year, 2015, is a big year for fans of the Back to
the Future trilogy. First of all, the original movie celebrated its 30th anniversary in July 2015, which is
sort of a big deal in itself, but in the movie, McFly
accelerates his DeLorean to 88mph on October 26,
1985. Another anniversary.
But wait, theres more. When Doc Brown takes
Marty McFly to the future, they land in October 21,
2015.
And here we are.
Our 2015 doesnt look exactly the way the filmmakers imagined it. But many of the ideas have
seen the light of day, if in a slightly different form.
In the movie, we see self-drying jackets, selflacing shoes, 3D movie technology, double ties,
robot waiters at a nostalgic 80s caf, fingerprint ID,
Pepsi Perfect, virtual windows, smartwatches with
accurate weather service and giant flatscreen TVs.
We also hear that Doc has been to a rejuvenation
clinic for an all-natural overhaul. They took out
some wrinkles, did a hair repair, changed the blood
[and] replaced my spleen and colon. And of course,
theres the built-in fax that tells McFly hes been
fired right after a video call with his boss.
In other words, a couple of misses, a couple of
near misses, and a lot of hits.

he misses show how predictions can go

wrong when you only extend your
knowledge of the present. Few of us
own fax machines these days, but back
in 1985, the fax machine was about as
cool as a car phone. So naturally, a fax machine built
into the wall of your house was even cooler.
There are also no Jaws sequels 519, and the justice system still uses lawyers.
But the list of hits is nothing short of impressive,
especially if we interpret them somewhat broadly.
Theres no self-drying jacket, but Nike has announced it will launch self-lacing shoes this year.
Smart clothing is definitely a concept of our time.
The first thing we see about the future is the existence of flying cars. At the end of the first movie,
Doc Brown assures Marty that the DeLorean can get
up to 88mph even on their short street because,
Roads? Where were going, we dont need roads.
The skies arent filled with flying cars, especially
not flying DeLoreans, but several companies are
developing drivable vehicles that fly.
The 3D movie technology has made great strides
but, unlike in the movie, we still have to wear those
special glasses. Speaking of glasses, the technology
to watch TV and answer the phone with your glasses
is available, and might take off when society is ready
to see people wearing them everywhere.
Opening a door with a fingerprint is no longer a
fantasy, and such locks can be found on Amazon.
Pepsi Perfect, a vitamin-enriched cola, turned out to
be Diet Coke Plus and 7Up with antioxidants. Both
have also been discontinued. (Another miss: Doc
gave Marty 50 dollars to buy the Pepsi a can of
soda is somewhere around a dollar today).
The Lexus Hoverboard

around the world, but youd have to
go to Ningbo in the Zhejiang province in China to be waited on by robots. But robots already pump gas in
the Netherlands and the US.
In the movie, Doc checks his smartwatch to see
when the rain will stop, something you can do with
an Apple Watch and a Dark Sky app.
Huge flatscreen TVs are ubiquitous and you can
do video conferencing and even swipe a credit card
in the comfort of your home.
Few of us would go as far as Doc with his body
overhaul and replace inner organs as a regular part
of healthcare, but its good to know it can be done in
case of an emergency.
There are virtual windows, and theres even a
YouTube channel called Scenery Channel, like Jennifer McFlys favorite.
But of all the inventions in the movie, the hoverboard a skateboard that hovers above ground has
been the one most coveted by the Internet crowd. In
fact, instead of simply predicting the future, the
movie may actually have shaped it. Fans who
dreamed of riding a hoverboard have grown up,
taken jobs at tech companies and made their childhood dream come true.
The Back to the Future

trilogy has grossed almost a billion dollars
In August, car manufacturer Lexus released a

video of its hoverboard. It uses magnetic levitation
technology, based on superconducting blocks sealed
in reservoirs of liquid nitrogen, and hovers above a
track inlaid with magnets. Unfortunately, only one
such track exists, built specifically for Lexus.
Meanwhile, Hendo has started to deliver its
betaboard, a miniature version of a hoverboard that
uses engines to induce an opposing magnetic field
towards a non-ferrous metal surface. Unfortunately,
the engines only work for about fifteen minutes.
Of all the new inventions in the movies, two are
nowhere to be seen. One is the tiny dehydrated pizza that expands into a family sized one in a hydrator.
The other is that double tie.
Well, maybe Marty McFly said it best in the first
movie, I guess you guys arent ready for that yet.
But your kids are gonna love it.

BREAThTAKING vIEwS IN ZERMATT
A first class vista of a snow-covered Matterhorn

basking in the winter sun is what lies beneath my
feet when I get off the glacier train at Gornergrat
at 3,100 metres above sea level. The air is thin and
cold and from here we can see Italian flags swaying
in the wind on the other side of famous Matterhorn.
Trying not to get intimidated of the height, me and
my guide start skiing down the wide and smooth
skislopes.
When hunger reminds me of lunchtime, we stop
by one of the mountain huts to eat. All the food is
local, always served with a chilled glass of white wine
the specialty of the Valais region. A few more hours
of skiing lie ahead, before darkness covers
Zermatt like a blanket. By then, its time to jump
out of the ski boots and relax in one of the hotels

outdoor jacuzzis, enjoying the sound of nothing.
In car-free Zermatt, all your stress will wane at
an instant.
EXTREME SKIING IN vAL DANNIvIERS
The key to getting value for your money is to get

away from high-profile, fashionable ski resorts.
Different from Zermatt, the region of Val dAnniviers
offers untouched nature. The two ski areas,
Grimentz-Zinal on one side of the valley and
St Luc-Chandolin on the other, deliver a great
quantity and variety of slopes. If you prefer technical
skiing, you are likely to enjoy Val dAnniviers with
over 40 percent of the slopes marked as extreme.
The Gardes de Bordon-freeride area has at least
100 hectares of non-signposted slopes. Made up of
steep slopes and challenging walls, the area is entirely dedicated to extreme skiers and snowboarders.
It delights powder enthusiasts with wide-open virgin
snow slopes. This freeride area is not safeguarded,
and is therefore only open when risk of avalanches
is less than 3 on the scale.

to after-ski.
Skipping breakfast, my guide and I decide to catch
one of the early-bird lifts toward Bruson. Skiing half
way back to the Bagnes valley, we stop by a charming stone hut in the mountains to have breakfast.
The owner of the hut proudly serves us different
kinds of cheese, home-made milk, apricot juice,
butter and freshly baked sourdough bread. What
a perfect way to start a day in Verbier for a day with
skis on my feet! The quality of the snow is hard
to beat, and as a powder lover, I realize that Im in
heaven. The off-piste is extensive and easily
accessible from the ski lifts.

Less than two hours from Geneva airport, you reach

Champry in the heart of Portes du Soleil, a typical
postcard Swiss village with its preserved architecture. Portes du Soleil offers a unique ski safari from
station to station, from valley to valley, from one
country to another.
While in Portes du Soleil, you find a humpback
track called The Swiss Wall, famous for being one
of the steepest slopes and most dangerous in the
world. This wall, approximately 50 percent gradient,
may have bumps up to two meters after fresh snowfall and is therefore suitable for good skiers with a
lot of experience.
After a day with skis on my feet, I take some time
to relax in the hot springs of the Thermes Parc in
Val dIlliez. Slowly, I can feel every muscle letting go
of its tension. Leaving Valais after five days of skiing,
I feel just like the regions own slogan says Valais
will forever be engraved on my heart.

whether hes directing films, making wine or launching
high-end hotels in exotic locations

producer, screenwriter, winemaker,
publisher and hotelier.
If you say yes enough times, you
end up in the hotel business, Cop
pola says, shrugging his massive
shoulders.
Back in early 1970s Hollywood, Coppola was the
toast of the town, praised for his masterful story
telling skills and keen directorial eye. By 1976, he had
more than half a dozen Academy Awards on his shelf.
Not being one to rest on his laurels, Coppola headed
into the Philippine jungle, his family in tow, and spent
the next few years completing Apocalypse Now.
In the film business, you usually stay in a place
for at least six months, maybe a year. You grow
attachments to people you like, to places you like.
So when its time to go, sometimes you dont want to
leave, Coppola says.

fell in love with the beauty of the landscape. After
announcing that he wanted a place in the jungle
where he could write, his wife Eleanor found a
remote, run-down lodge on the island, which they

Blancaneaux Lodge began accepting guests in

1993. It was followed by four more luxury resorts:
the Turtle Inn, also in Belize, La Lancha in Guatemala, Jardn Escondido in Buenos Aires, and Palazzo Margherita in Italy.
All five Coppola resorts reflect the man himself.
Partly because he personally supervised the building and renovations on all of them. And partly
because all five served as family homes before
opening their doors to the public. Palazzo
Margherita, however, is possibly the one closest to
Coppolas heart.
The 19th-century palazzo is located in the small
southern Italian town of Bernalda, the birthplace of
Coppolas grandfather. Coppola wanted a place that
his children would visit again and again. And in
1974
Godfather II becomes first s equel to
win an Oscar. It won three: Best Adapted
Screenplay, Best Director and Best
Picture. The Conversation wins a Palme
dOr at the Cannes Film Festival

business, he invited the entire Coppola clan to
contribute design ideas.
It has magical gardens, Coppola says. The
family has gathered in the magnificent salon on
many occasions for celebrations, intimate teas and
film screenings. The rooms are palatial, with frescos
on the ceilings and walls. It has many modern
touches, of course, yet the patina of history is
preserved.
The restaurant serves local delicacies, and the hotel runs cooking classes focusing on the regions culinary traditions. But, Coppola says, what makes the
difference is the charm and attitude of the people
who work there, most of whom are locals.
They make such a huge effort and are excellent.

Hot springs are plentiful in Japan, and there is a thriving communal
bathing culture built around them. A good place to dive into Japanese
bathing is Hakone, in the shadow of Mount Fuji, just
90 minutes by train from Tokyo

part of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, an area renowned for its
natural beauty and stunning views
of Mount Fuji. The area makes an
ideal getaway for travelers looking
for a break from the buzz and bustle
of Tokyo, or to experience the magical relaxation of
bathing in hot springs.
Mount Fuji is the symbol of Japan and a Unesco
World Heritage Site since 2013. Its one of around
450 volcanoes that comprise the Ring of Fire encircling the Pacific Ocean. The volcano last erupted
in 1708 but is classified as active. Its magma chamber warms a number of natural hot springs, which
are popular destinations for day trips and overnight
excursions from Tokyo.
There is a strong communal bathing culture in
Japan, and resort towns tapping the geothermal
waters can be found throughout the Japanese archipelago.
The tradition goes back a long way. The first
European visitors to Japan, Portuguese and Dutch
traders and missionaries who arrived in the 16th
century, frequently commented on Japanese
bathing habits. The Portuguese missionary Joo
Rodrigues wrote:
It is a general custom in Japan to wash the body
at least once or twice a day. [Indeed] the Japanese
seem to excel everybody else in this matter, not only
in the frequency with which they bathe during the
day, but even more so in the cleanliness and dignity
which they observe in that place.
The tradition is just as important today. Bathing is
not really about getting clean its a daily relaxation
ritual for many Japanese people.

Shinto purification rituals, which combined physical and spiritual cleansing. Initially, onsen were reserved for traveling samurai, priests or local residents.
Hot springs are associated with health benefits in
many countries, and Japan is no exception. This is
often to do with the high mineral content the waters
tend to have due to the ability of hot water to hold
more dissolved solids.

Hot spring waters are held to relieve skin problems, promote weight loss and cure virtually every
known ailment.
Public baths are fast-disappearing in Japanese cities, as most people are now able to bathe at home,
but the Japanese continue to be enthusiastic onsen
visitors. Japanese businesspeople even praise onsen
baths as a way of breaking down communication
barriers.
Men and women bathe separately, though small
children can bathe with either parent. Many hotels
and inns offer a private bath, which you may need to
book in advance. Swimsuits are not permitted.
Bathers wash their bodies before getting into the
bath, as the water is communal. There is normally a
washing area adjacent to the bathing pool, and soap
and shampoo are provided.
Often there are both indoor and outdoor bathing
options. The outdoor pool is called a rotenburo. It
offers a chance to admire the view of autumn leaves,

IM FROM RE in northern Sweden and grew up at

kid and I try to give my son that sort of environment.
WE TRAVELED by VW bus when I was a kid, with
Italy usually our goal. We were in Prague just before

the Russians invaded.
MY FIRST PLANE TRIP was when I was 14. I went on

a language exchange program to England, which
was basically a booze trip.
WHEN I WAS 16 I lived in Sri Lanka for a year with
my father. The first couple of weeks were culture

shock but then I fell in love with it.

WHEN BOOKING your ticket,

you might notice that prices
can vary, even for the same
flight. Pricing is complex as
there are more options available to passengers. In this area,
SASs Revenue Management
has an important role to play.
Tobias Jnsson, Vice President of Revenue Management
at SAS, says We set and distribute SASs prices. We have
millions of combinations to
price, while taking into account
all the factors affecting demand.
These factors include when
the flight is booked, what class
is booked, time of day, time of
year, and external forces such
as events and expected connecting passengers.
Take the example of a flight
from Stockholm to London on
Tuesday at 11am, says Jnsson. There might be a big
event in London, which means
a higher demand for tickets.
Then there are different kinds
of tickets, and there might be
connecting passengers. All of
these factors affect price.
JNSSON CONTINUES, I often
get asked what you should do

to find the lowest prices. The
trick is booking when demand
is the lowest, which typically
means booking long before
departure and selecting midday or late flights in periods
outside vacation times.

tailor prices, so a tight internal
collaboration is crucial.
A key aspect of customizing
services is offering new concepts, such as SAS Go Light,

FOR ALMOST 70 YEARS, SAS has helped to connect Scandinavians with the world and the world with Scandinavia. Over
the next 12 months, SAS will provide even greater opportunities by offering direct services between Stockholm and Hong
Kong, Oslo, Miami and Los Angeles, and Copenhagen and Miami. We are also increasing the number of departures to key
cities including New York, Chicago, and Shanghai, making
2015/16 one of the most expansive periods in SASs long-haul
history. Next year, we will offer more than 410,000 additional
seats to international cities.
As well as adding new routes to our network, we are also
introducing new enhanced Airbus A330 aircraft into our fleet.
From September 2015, we will add four new planes. In November, the first Airbus A340 will get a new cabin similar to
the one in our Airbus A330 aircraft. Our cabins are among
Europes finest and the new ones have scored well over 80%
in customer satisfaction. With over half of our total revenue
coming from our four million EuroBonus members, we are on
our way of achieving our goal to become a membership airline.
Our members want to be well taken care of while enjoying
an exciting travel future with SAS. Over the coming months,
we will invite a number of customers to get involved and help
shape the customer solutions in our upcoming Airbus A350
aircraft (to be introduced into the SAS fleet from 2018). Their
knowledge, experience, and interests will help us develop the
best possible solutions for our members.
Passengers flying from any capital in Scandinavia flying to
northern Norway or Sweden only gets crispbread and
cashew nuts to eat during a three to four hour flight. Why
cant a sandwich or salad be served on longer flights in the
Nordics?
We are in the process of changing this situation. During the
fall, our food concept will gradually be changed so you will be
offered something more to eat. On our longest European
routes, we have already made the change. You will also have
the opportunity to pre-order food (once youve bought a SAS
Go ticket), so you can be sure of getting the meal you want.

THE SAS
ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAM
SASs overall goal is a 20% reduction
in emissions by 2015. Fleet renewal
is an important part of that strategy.
To date, SAS has taken delivery of 27
state-of-the-art Airbus A320 and
Boeing 737-700/800 planes, which
have replaced older models such as
the MD-80. Fuel consumption and
associated emissions are in line with
SASs target. The varied fleet of
Boeing 737s and A320s allows SAS
to adjust capacity to demand and
ensures emissions are kept to a

minimum. SAS also gives passengers

and cargo customers the
opportunity to offset their carbon
emissions. The emissions calculator

alongside the 2014 Sustainability
Report. SAS has reduced carbon
emissions by some 15% over the past
eight years and is one of only a few
airlines that is ISO 14001 certified
proof that it takes its environmental
responsibilities seriously.
