slideshow, a Word document, a series of photos of people at your schooland then
add audio, text, video comments.

It enables you to have conversations about what you're sharing with your audience.
You can pre-record your voice, record it online, call in with your mobile phone, and the
possibilities are endless as to what you can use VoiceThread for.

About this Tutorial

This tutorial is divided up into several sections; those sections include the following:

How to Get Your VoiceThread Account

How to Get the Free Educator Account (a $50 value)
How to Put a Slideshow online
How to Enable Commenting by Others (or not)
How to Share Your VoiceThread with Others

To get started, go to http://voicethread.com

How to Register for Your VoiceThread Account

Step 1: Go to http://voicethread.com
Step 2: Click on REGISTER in the top right-hand corner, as shown in the image below:

Now that you've created your VoiceThread.com account, you are

immediately able to start creating VoiceThreads! But, before we
start having fun, let's push on and get your free EDUCATOR
account, which is a tremendous value at $59.95!

Click the GO PRO button in the top right-hand corner of the screen.

Note that K-12 educators can click here to see options just for them!

How to Add Your Picture to

VoiceThread.com
One of the annoying aspects of VoiceThread is that it will constantly
ask you to upload a picture of yourself. This picture is used to
represent you when you leave audio/text/video comments for
others.

After you have selected an image of your face (or your favorite
image), click SAVE then DONE. And, that's it!

How to Put a SlideShow Online

You can easily uploadthat is, send your Powerpointyour slide
show to VoiceThread.com. Once your Powerpoint is online, you
can add audio/video/text comments to it. This section will walk
you through that process!
To start out, click on the CREATE button on VoiceThread.com.

Note that when you click UPLOAD, the first step in the CREATE
process, you will be given the opportunity to choose your
presentation.
You can BROWSE to where your Powerpoint slide show is on
your computer's hard drive.
10

The next step once you get your Powerpoint loaded is to add
COMMENTs to each slide. This is useful because you can actually
share what you wanted to say about any particular slide in the
presentation.

11

12

13

As seen below, you can also click on OPTIONS to determine how

many seconds before each slide automatically moves forward (this
is also adjusted to your audio recording), as well as allowing others
to get an original copy of your presentation document. Click SAVE.

14

Once you have created your VoiceThread, or when you are viewing
ANY VoiceThread, you can quickly jump to one slide out of many by
using the slide cluster button in the bottom right hand corner.

How To Share Your VoiceThread with

Others

When sharing my VoiceThreads with others, I usually set my

SHARING OPTIONS as Public, yes comments because I
want others to interact with what I have to say and share via my
VoiceThread presentation.
However, you may not want to allow that, and you have the
choice of making it Public, no comments or, if you really want
to restrict the audience, choose Private.
There is another important option to be aware of, especially if
you have a web page or blog. You can actually EMBED your
VoiceThread on a web page.
Let's explore how to do that.

16

Here's the quickest ways to share your VoiceThread.com with

others...copy-n-paste the embed code or just copy the link and
share that with others.

17

If you decided to export your VoiceThread, you'll see a window

that looks like the one below. Again, the purpose of this is to
enable you to save your VoiceThread as a movie you can store
on your computer, upload to Edublogs.tv (online video/audio
storage site for educators), YouTube, or GoogleVideo.

18

Adding Comments in VoiceThread:

Using Your Phone (mobile or otherwise)

Although you will get about 3 minutes of free commenting,

you can click on the ADD button and get more time at cost.

19

When you click on the ADD button (view previous screenshot)

you will get a window that looks like this one below. I'm going to
click NOT NOW and just go with free commenting.

20

Adding Comments in VoiceThread:

Upload Your Pre-Recorded Audio
I often like to record audio using an Olympus WS-110, convert it from WMA to MP3
format, and then edit it using Audacity sound editor. It gives me greater control over
the content.
This makes it easy for me to create audio with special sound effects I wouldn't
normally have access to when recording by phone or just using the record function
in VoiceThread.

21

Adding Comments in VoiceThread:

Using Your Video/Web Camera

22

Adding Comments in VoiceThread:

Adding Text Comment

Text, audio and video

comments co-exist!
