Electric Generator: From Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia

A generator is a device that converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. Sources of mechanical energy that generators use include steam turbines, gas turbines, water turbines, internal combustion engines, and hand cranks. The first electromagnetic generator was built in 1831 by Michael Faraday. Generators provide nearly all the power for electric power grids. Motors and generators have similarities in that motors can be mechanically driven to generate electricity and often work as manual generators.
