Test+ +1

This document contains a test with 6 questions related to communication networks. Question 1 has parts about encoding binary data for Ethernet transmission, identifying the modulation scheme from a constellation diagram, and comparing error control in the datalink and transport layers. Question 2 involves error detection using Hamming encoding. Question 3 requires extracting information from an HDLC frame. Question 4 demonstrates selective repeat ARQ with a window size of 7. Question 5 calculates idle time for a Go-back-N ARQ protocol over a long distance. Question 6 compares efficiencies of Stop-and-wait, Go-back-N, and Selective repeat ARQ protocols.

BITS PILANI-HYDERABAD CAMPUS

ECE C394: Communication Networks

Test I (Closed Book)
Time: 60 Min
Max. Marks: 60
22-02-2014
(Instruction: Answer all parts of a question at one place. Do not use pencil.)
1. (a) The binary data stream 10110010 is to be transmitted through a traditional Ethernet
LAN. Sketch the eight binary datas using appropriate encoding scheme so that it can be
transmitted through a traditional Ethernet LAN.
[4]
(b) The constellation diagram of a modulation scheme is given below.

I. What is the number of bits per each signal unit in above modulation scheme?
II. What will be the maximum data transmission rate possible through a telephone
line of band width 4KHz using the above modulation scheme?
[2+2]
(c) What is the difference between Datalink layer and Transport layer error control
function?

[2]

2. The code 10111100101 that is the combination of data and redundancy bits received by
the receiver. Indicate the position of the error if any using Hamming encoding algorithm.
Extract the original error free (if any) data. Here the redundant bits are positioned at 1, 2,
4, 8, bit locations starting from LSB side.
[8+2]

3. A HDLC frame for unbalanced mode is given below. Find the following informations.
01111110 00000000 00001111 10100011 10011001 01111110
(a)
(b)
(c)
(d)
(e)

What is the destination address in decimal notation?

What is the type of the frame?
Who sends this frame to whom?
Receiving of which frame is acknowledged by this frame?
Give the bit stream for frame check sequence.

[10]
PTO.

4. Assume 3-bits are used for numbering of frames in selective repeat ARQ protocol. Using
this frame numbering frames are transmitted from transmitter starting from frame 0 (first
frame) to receiver. Assume the window size used in 7. Show the transmitter side window,
receiver side window and transmission of frames clearly (all three after each frame
transmission) and indicate the situation, where the window size 7 will create problem of
interpreting the retransmitting frame as new frame.
[10]
5. Computer A uses Go back N ARQ protocol with a window size of 511 to send packets to
computer B. The distance between A and B is 80,000km.The propagation speed is same
as speed of light. A sends out packets of 2000bytes with throughput of 100,000Kbps. It is
also assumed that the time taken at receiver to receive data, do error checking and
sending back the acknowledgement is zero. Find out the duration in msec for which
computer A remains idle between beginning of sending of first packet and receiving the
first acknowledgment.
[10]

6. Suppose that frames are 2500 bytes long including 50 bytes of overhead, and ACK
frames are 50 bytes long. Find the efficiency in of Stop and wait, Go-back-N and
Selective repeat ARQ. Assume the system transmits at R = 2 Mbps with reaction time of
50ms, and the bit error rate is 10-5.
