Herewegoagain.Unidenhasputoutthisfabulousscannerthatwilldoamultitudeofscanningachievementandyouareheretofindouthow.This
scannerisexceptionallyhardertoprogramformany(evenseasonedprogrammers)because,thereisnoprintedmanualandtheCDmanualistoo
cluttered.Ihavewrittenthismanualtokeepallofyoufromgivinguphope,loosingyoumind,tryingtoreturnyourscanner,oralloftheabove.This
manualisaculminationoftheWiki,theCDmanual,(273pages!?)oftheBCD396XTCompleteReference(stillnotonefortheBCT15X),andall
otherprevious'EasiertoRead'andUnidenmanuals.

TherearequiteafewimprovedandnewfeaturestheBCT15XhasthattheBCT15didn'thave.9,000channels,controlchanneldataoutput,negative
delayorforcedresume(andwhydidittake5yearstobringthatback?),unit(orradio)IDscannowbeviewedwithtrunkingsystems,numbertagsfor
yoursystems/channels/searches,PriorityIDs,PreemptivePriorityonMotorolaanalogsystems,anadjustableprioritycheckintervalwithan
adjustablenumberofchannelstobechecked,visualalerts,adjustablevolumeoffsetforeachchannel,GPScontrolhasbeennarroweddowntothe
siteandgrouplevel(vs.system/sitelevel),aBandScopeMode,IntermediateFrequencyExchange,KeySafeMode,andtheabilitysetasystemas
'Private'.FireToneOutwillnowsearchandfindyourtonestoprogram(duh).Anyofthe3'SearchKeys'cannowbeassigntoa'BandScopeMode'
oraToneOutsearchaswellasanycustomorservicesearch.Youcaneditthedefaultreceivebandsofthescannertobetterandquickersuityour
scanningpreferences.Forthe'techs',youcannowenteryourMotorolaIDsinhexadecimalformat.Theyhaveincreasedthemaxrangelimitfor
approachingaPOIfrom2to4miles.ForthoseofyouwhouseGPSenabledscanningonmountaintops,theyincreasedthemaxrangesettingfrom
50to125miles.ForthoseofyoudrivingaLamborghini,they'vebumpedupthemaxspeedlimitforapproachingaDangerousRoad/Xingfrom100to
200mph.

Nowtheannoyingstuff.RightoutoftheboxalloftheBearTrackerfeaturesareturnedonwhichisridiculousifyoudon'tknowhowtoturnthemoff.
ThedefaultvolumefortheBearTrackeralerttoneislikeasmokedetector,waytooloudforanypoorsoulwhogetscaughtinfrontofthescanner
whenitgoesoff.Mostofyouthathavethescannerhaverudelyfoundthisout.Unidenapparentlydoesn'tthinkthisscanner(orthe346XT)deserves
AGC.TheyalsodroppedattenuationforBearTrackerscanningandthe'MaxPriorityScan'featurewhichlimitsthenumberofpresetBearTracker
prioritychannelsscannedwithpriorityon.Numbertagsshouldbeviewedwiththerestofthechannelinfosoyoucanjustscrolltothem.WithKey
SafeModeyouarestuckwithjustthelastmodethescannerwasinwhenyouturnedofftheradio(i.e.CloseCall,Scan,etc.).(Maybetheyshould've
calleditModeSafeMode?).'Private'systemscanbesettoPrivateonlywithsoftware.StartupConfigurationcan'tbecanceledonceyoustartusingit
thescannerremembersthelastuseconfigurationunlessyouuseanother,(still)scansmultipletrunkingsystemsrelativelyslowevenwiththehold
timesetto0(especiallyifyouhavealotofIDsprogrammed).Youhavetoholdonachannelfirst,toattenuateit.Thereisno'perchannel'delayyou
mustsetthedelayforthewholesystem(allsites,allgroups,allchannels).Resettingtheradiohowmanyofyoucandothatonthefirsttry?Updating
thefirmware(aftertryingtogetitfromUniden'swebsite)isstillverycomplicated.And,thebiggestcomplaintwasnoprintedmanual.Ifyoudon'tneed
9,000channels,negativedelay,ortheBandScopemodeyou'rebetteroffwiththeolderBCT15.
Therearebetterantennasouttheretousethantheonethatcomeswiththescanner.Thestockwhipisn'tfabulous.RShastheCenterLoaded
TelescopingWhipfor$15betterforVHF/UHF.The800MHzScannerAntennafor$25100%betterfor700+MHz.Youmaybeabletofindothers
onthewebbutRSisconvenientsoyoucanbuyitandtakeitbackinthesamedayifyoudon'tlikeit.Readthereviewsforeachatthesite.
IshouldalsomentionthatRichBarnett,presidentofScannerMaster,waskindenoughtolendmeaBCT15XsoIcouldwritethismanual.Without
thispersonalgesture,youwouldnotbereadingthis.And,thankstothemanypeoplewhohavepostedtheirvaluableinsightontheRadioReference
forumsandYahoogroups.
AnoverviewofthefeaturescanalsobeviewedatmyTrunkingRadioComparisonChartpage.

Itisalsorecommendedthatyoudownloadandinstallthelatestfirmwareupgradeforthescannersifyoudon'thaveit.SeecheckingFirmware
Version.AnotherrecommendationisthefreewareBCprogtoolthatallowsPOI,DRD,andDXGeditingandcanrunwithMacintoshoperatingsystems.

Forthoseofyouwhoarenewtotrunking,dynamicmemory,orhaven'thadascannerinthelast10yearsitisagoodideatoreadtherespective
sectionsonthosetopics.Youreallyhavetoknowhowtrunkingworksinordertoprogramatrunkingsystem.Itwon'tdoyouanygoodtotryto
programatrunkingsystemunlessyouknowwhattheradioneedsandisgoingtodowiththedata(controlchannel,IDs,LCNorder,etc.).

IhaveincludedlinkstootherinformationintheWiki(notrelevanttotheoperationofthescanner)soyoucanstillfindtherestoftheinfosuchas
specs,weathereventcodes,decipheringtrunkedsystems,etc.andconcentrateontheprogrammingandoperationofthescanner.

BandScopeModeBandScopemodeisaspecialtypeofsearchmodewherethescannerdisplaysthestrengthofanysignalitfinds.
Priority/PriorityPlusScanprioritychannelsletyoukeeptrackofactivityonyourmostimportantchannelswhilemonitoringotherchannelsfor
transmissionsandyoucanscanjusttheprioritychannels.
PriorityIDScanallowsyoutosetprioritytotalkgroupIDs.

PreemptivePriorityafeaturethatworksonMotorolasystems.IftheMotorolasystemhasprioritychannels,andyouassignoneofthose
talkgroupsaspriorityinthescanner,thenwhenoneofthosechannelsbecomesactive,thescannerwilljumptoitevenifitisonadifferentsystem
voicechannel(i.e.itpreemptsyourcurrentreception).
EDACSESKSupportprovidestheabilitytomonitoranalogtalkgroupsonthosesystems.

alertinthescanner,youcanselectfrom9differenttonepatterns,15volumesettings,and2blinkpatterns.
RepeaterReverseallowsthescannertotrytoswitchtotherepeaterifaninputfrequencyisfound.
BroadcastScreenallowsthescannertoignorehitsonknownbroadcastfrequenciesincludingpagerfrequenciesinsearchandCloseCall
modes.Youcanalsoprogramupto10customfrequencyrangesthatthescannerwillignore.
TextTaggingyoucannameeachsystem,site,group,channel,talkgroupID,customsearchrange,location,ToneOut,andSAMEgroup,using
upto16characterspername.
SAMEWeatherAlert/Priority(withprogrammableFIPcodes)letsyourscanneralertyouwhenaSAMEweatheralertistransmittedonaNOAA
weatherchannel.Thescanneralsodisplaysthealerttype.

Thescanner'smemoryisorganizedinanarchitecturecalledDynamicAllocatedChannelmemory.Thistypeofmemoryisorganizeddifferentlyand
moreefficientlythanthebank/channelarchitectureusedbytraditionalscanners.DynamicAllocateddesignmatcheshowradiosystemsactuallywork
muchmorecloselyandmakeiteasiertodeterminehowmuchmemoryyouhaveusedandhowmuchyouhaveleft.Nomemoryspaceiswasted.
Sinceyoucanonlyprogramonetrunkingsystemperbankinatraditionalscanner,andlet'ssayyouonlyhave10banks,youcanonlystore10
trunkingsystems.Also,sincesometrunkedsystemsmighthavehundredsoftalkgroupsyouwishtomonitor,youmighthavetoenterthosesystems
intomultiplebanksinordertomonitoralltheID's.

Insteadofbeingorganizedintoseparatebanksandchannels,thescanner'smemoryiscontainedinapool.Youbuildthesystemsandgroupsthen
useasmuchmemoryasyouneedinthepooltostorefrequencies,talkgroupID's,andalphatags.Withallpreviousscanners,youselectedbanksto
scanthathadchannelsstoredinthem.Withthisscanner,youselectconventional'Systems'(ortrunking'Sites')toscanthathavechannel'Groups'
storedwithinthe'Systems'.ConventionalsystemshavefrequencygroupsandtrunkingsystemshaveIDgroups.Fortrunkingsystems,youhaveto
createatleast1'Site'(MotorolaandEDACSonly)ormultiplesitesfirstthatholdthetrunkingfrequenciesforeachsite.TheIDchannel'Groups'
storedwithinthetrunkingsystemscanbeusedwithallthesites.
Youcanstoreupto20'Groups'per'System'withupto1000frequenciesor500IDsineach'Group'.Youcanhave1000totalchannelsper
conventionalsystemandupto256'Sites'ifyouhaveenoughmemory.Youcanhaveamaximumof500Systems,1000Sites,and9,000Channels.

Thereare100'System/Site/SearchQuickKeys'(099)and10'GroupQuickKeys'(09).
'QuickKeys'areusedtoturnconventionalsystems,trunkingsites(notsystems),channelgroups,andcustom/servicesearchesonandoffwhile
scanning.Thisisnotthesameaslockingoutorunlockingsystems/sites/groups/searches(whichyoucanalsodo).Theyarejustthenumberkeyson
thescannerbutonceassignedtosystems/sites/groups/searchestheybecomethe'QuickKey's.Youcanprogramoneormore
system/site/group/searchtoanyquickkeyor,programoneormoresystem/site/group/searchwithnoquickkey.Anyconventionalsystem,CloseCall
system,trunkedsite,group,servicesearch,customsearch,or'QuickSave'system/groupnotassignedtoaquickkey(and/ornotlockedout)willbe
scanned.

Simplexsystemsuseasinglefrequencyforbothtransmitandreceive.Mostradiosusingthistypeofoperationarelimitedtolineofsightoperation.
Thistypeofradioisfrequentlyusedatconstructionjobsites,andwithinexpensiveconsumerradiossuchasGMRS/FRSradios.Therangeis
typically18miles,dependingupontheterrainandmanyotherfactors.

Repeatersystemsusetwofrequencies:onetransmitsfromtheradiotoacentralrepeatertheothertransmitsfromtherepeatertootherradiosinthe
system.Witharepeaterbasedsystem,therepeaterislocatedontopofatallbuildingoronaradiotowerthatprovidesgreatvisibilitytotheareaof
operation.Whenausertransmits(onaninputfrequency),thesignalispickedupbytherepeaterandretransmitted(onanoutputfrequency).The
user'sradiosalwayslistenforactivityontheoutputfrequencyandtransmitontheinputfrequency.Sincetherepeaterislocatedveryhigh,thereisa
verylargelineofsight.Typicalrepeatersystemsprovidecoverageouttoabouta25mileradiusfromtherepeaterlocation.

CTCSSandDCSsystemsallusesomeformofcodedsquelch.Codedsquelchtechniquesinvolvethetransmissionofaspecial'code'signalalong
withtheaudioofaradiotransmission.Areceiverwithcodedsquelchonlyactivateswhenthereceivedsignalhasthecorrect'code'.Thisletsmany

usersshareasinglefrequency,anddecreasesinterferencecausedbydistanttransmittersonthesamechannel.Inallmajormetropolitanareasofthe
UnitedStates,everyavailableradiochannelisassignedtomorethanoneuser.Publicsafetyradiosystemsonthesamefrequencyareusuallysetup

Trunkingsystemsletalargegroupof2wayradiousers(orevendifferentgroupsof2wayradiousers)efficientlyuseasetoffrequencies.Insteadof
selectingaspecificfrequencyforatransmission,theusersradioselectsaprogrammedtrunkingbankinthesystemwhenthatuserpressestheir
PTT(pushtotalk)button.Thetrunkingsystemautomaticallytransmitsthecallonthefirstavailablefrequency,andalsosends(onadifferent
frequencycalledaDataorControlchannel)acodethatuniquelyidentifiesthattransmissionasatalkgroupID(orjustID.)Sowhenyouare
trunktrackingasystem,youarelisteningtoactiveIDstransmittinginthesystem(eachusingthefirstavailablefrequencyinthesystem.)Trunking

frequenciessharedbyalltheusers.Theremaybe3or4frequenciesassignedas(primaryoralternate)controlchannelsbutonlyonecontrolchannel
willbeactiveatatime.ThesescannerswillallowyoutoprogramjustMotorolacontrolchannelsintothetrunkingsystemandthevoicechannelswill
automaticallybefound(butnotprogrammed).EDACSsystemsneedallthefrequenciesforthesystemprogrammedandinthecorrectLCN(Logical
ChannelNumber)order.
Thecontrolchanneliscontinuallytransmittedtothefieldunitsandhasasoundsimilartolisteningtoaboatengineoverthephone(inmanualmode
youwon'thearthiswhenyouaretrunkingthesystem.)Thiscontrolchannelisalsoagoodchecktoseeifyoucantrunktrackthesystem.Ifyoucan't
hearacontrolchannelwhenyoustepthroughthetrunkingfrequencies(inmanualmode),youeitherdon'thaveallthefrequenciesoraretoofaraway
toreceivethecontrolchannelandthesystem.Motorolasystemsarelimitedtoamaximumof28frequenciespersystemorsite.EricssonEDACS
systemsarelimitedto25frequenciespersystemorsite.MotorolaandEDACSsystemscanbeeitheranalog,digital,ormixed(digitalandanalog
talkgroups).MixedMotorolasystemsshouldbeprogrammedasMotorolasystemsandnotP25digitalsystems.Thisscannercan'tmonitordigital
systems.
LTRsystemsworkalittledifferently.LTRsystemstypicallydonothaveadedicatedcontrolchannel.Thistypeofsystemencodesalltrunking
informationasdigitalsubaudibledatathataccompanieseachtransmission.ThefrequenciesalsohavetobeinLCN(LogicalChannelNumber)order
orthecorrect'slot'forthesystemtotrunktrackproperly.Eachrepeaterhasitsowncontroller,andallofthesecontrollersaresynchronizedtogether.
Eventhougheachcontrollermonitorsitsownchannel,oneofthechannelcontrollersisassignedtobeamasterthatallcontrollersreportto.Eachof
thesecontrollerssendsoutadataburstapproximatelyevery10secondssothatthesubscriberunitsknowthatthesystemisthere.Thisdataburstis
notsentatthesametimebyallthechannels,buthappensrandomlythroughoutallthesystemchannels.IfyoulistentothefrequenciesofanLTR
systeminmanualmode(nottrunking),oneverychannelinthesystemyouwillhearthisdataburstthatwillsoundlikeashortblipofstaticlike

TrunkscanningisbasicallyscanningIDsthatareprogrammedintoIDlocations(sameconceptasfrequenciesintochannels).Youcanthen
trunkscanjusttheprogrammedIDs.TrunktrackingissearchingforallIDsinasystem(sameconceptassearchingforfrequenciesinaband).

UnderstandingMultiSiteTrunking
SomeMotorolaandEDACSsystemscoveringaverylargegeographicareausemultipleantennasitesthateachoperateondifferentfrequenciesand
usethesametalkgroupIDsfortraffic.Eachsitewillhaveitsownsetoftrunkingfrequenciesandismonitoredlikeasinglesystem.Eachsitecanhave
itsownquickkey,soyoucanturneachindividualsiteonoroffwhileyouscan.Programyourtalkgroupsintochannelgroupswithinthatsystemand
alltalkgroupsinthesystemareavailabletoeverysitesotheydon'thavetobereprogrammedforeachsite.Sinceallsitesshareallthetalkgroups
withinthesystem,multisitetrunkingismuchmoreefficientthanprogrammingeachsiteasaseparatesystem.

BearTrackerWarningSystem
Mosthighwaypatrolvehiclesontheroadtodayareequippedwithasecondaryradiosystemknownasa'mobileextender'or'vehicularrepeater'.
Wheneverthedispatchertransmitstoanyvehicleinthedistrict,amobileextenderineverycarwithinthedistrictisactivated.
TheBearTrackerWarningSystemmonitorsthesefrequenciesusedbymobileextenderradiosaswellascartocar,aircrafttocar,andother
specialpurposefrequencies.Whenenabled,thescannerchecksforactivityonthesefrequenciesforyourstateevery2seconds.Wheneveryouare
withinanapproximatethreemileradiusofHighwayPatrol/StatePoliceunitsusingamobileextenderunit,theBTdisplayiconbeginstoblink,the
BearTrackerLEDlights,youcanselectanalerttone,volumelevel,visualalert,ornoalerts.ThescannerscansallthechannelsoftheBearTracker
system.

BearTrackerScanning
TheBCT15includesstatebystatepreprogrammedfrequenciesdesignedtoprovideyouwithgoodgeneralradiocoveragetargetedtothestateyou
arein.Whenyouhaveselectedastateandthenoneormoreofthepreprogrammedservices,eachenabledservice'siconisdisplayedonthelower
partofthedisplay.Whentheyaredisabled,theiconsdisappearsfromthedisplay.Whenthescannerdetectsasignalinanenabledservice,theicon
blinks.Afterscanningyourprogrammedsystems,thescannerwillscantheenabledstatebystateagencies,thenresumescanningyour

TheBandScopefeatureletsyouhavethescannerprovideavisualrepresentationofradioactivityinafrequencyband.Thescreenisarrangedwith
thefrequenciesincreasinginvaluefromlefttoright,andasignalstrengthmeterforsignals.BandScopeModesearchesafrequencyrangeand
displaysthesignallevelinrealtime.Youcansetthecenterfrequencyandspanofthefrequencyrange.InHoldMode,youcanmonitorthedisplayed
frequency.
Thescannerrapidlysweepsbetweentheendpointsoftheselectedfrequencyrangeandupdateseachbarsegmentwiththerelativesignalstrength
ineachpass.Youcanusethebandscopeinnormalmode(thebarsareallupdatedwiththemostrecentsignalstrength)or'MaxHoldMode'(the
barsupdateonlyifthereisastrongersignalthanonepreviouslystoredforthecurrentposition).
Thisfeatureallowsyoutogeta"picture"ofspectrumactivityacrosstheselectedrange,identifyintermittentlyactivefrequencies,checkantenna
performance,checkcoaxquality,verifycoverageareas,andidentifyinterference.

ToStartBandScopeModeHoldonanychannelandpress then3(Srch3)tostartBandScopemodeatthefrequencyyouheldat.BandScope
modeisassignedtothissearchkey(3)bydefault.
SearchMode'SRCH'showsinthedisplayandthescannersearchesanddisplaysthesignalsofthefrequencyrangeinrealtime.Thefrequency
rangeisshownin32barsdeterminedbythecenterfrequencyandspan.Whilesearching,thecenterfrequencyiconandthebarwhichshowsthe
currentfrequencyblink.Thescannerstartsfromthelowestfrequencyofthefrequencyrangeandsearchestothehighestfrequencyofthefrequency
range.Ifthescannerfindsatransmission,thescannerdisplaysthestrongestandmostcurrentsignallevelinthebarforeachfrequencyintherange.
MaxHoldSearchMode'MAX'showsinthedisplayandwillfreezethesignalstrengthbarsattheirstrongestsignals.
