Say: 50,000 cfm

Engineering Design:
1. The extraction point located above the highest occupied at Ground Floor Level.
2. The extraction air is directed to discharge at the floor opening.
3. Clause 15.3.7.1.b is clearly inadequate in this instance, as said 4 ACH method applies to sterile tube atrium type only.
Calculation And Assumptions:
1. Based on Clause 15.3.7.1.b for sterile tube atrium type (17 metre or less and volume more than 17000 m2)
2. Than smoke exhaust rate is 4 air change/hour.
3. Hence based on table, smoke extraction rate at 4 ACH is 50,000 cfm
4. Based on 'Design of Smoke Management System' by ASHRAE and SFPE
5.

Zf = 0.166 Ec^0.4
Using equation 10.9 of the SFPE guide
where:
Zf = limiting height above fuel
Ec = convective heat release rate of fire = 1.5mW
Therefore Zf = 0.166 (0.7 x 1500)^0.4
= 2.68 metre
Say 3.0 metre

6.

Since the limiting height is less than the clear height of 11.5 metre, latter is used for subsequent calculation.
Using equation 10.8 of the SFPE guide
m = 0.071 Ec^1/3 Z^5/3 + 0.0018 Ec
where:
m = mass rate of smoke production
Z = height from top of fuel surface to bottom of smoke layer
Therefore, m = (0.071 (0.7 x 1500)^1/3 x 11.5^5/3) + (0.0018 x 0.7 x 1500)
= 44.12 kg/s

7.

Q = C m/e
Using equation 10.12 of the SFPE guide
where:
Q = volumetric smoke production rate
C = entraiment constant = 1
e = density of plume gas = 1.2 kg/m3
Therefore Q = 1 (44.12/1.2) m3/s
= 36.8 M3/s @ 77,915 cfm
Add Safety Factor (15%) = 89,602 cfm
Say
= 90,000 cfm

8.

Hence, 3 unit of Exhaust Smoke Spill Fan capacity 30,000 cfm (each) is selected located at Ground Floor Level
