What Is Engineering Mechanics ?: Study of The Effect of Forces On A Body at Rest or Uniform Motion

Engineering mechanics is the study of forces on bodies at rest or in motion. It includes statics, which examines rigid bodies at rest or moving at constant velocity, and dynamics, which examines rigid bodies undergoing acceleration. Mechanics also considers deformable bodies like fluids. Rigid bodies are idealized as undergoing no deformation, with constant distances between particles. Mechanics problems involve representing forces as points and determining equilibrium conditions when all external forces balance. Understanding fundamental mechanics concepts helps engineers solve practical challenges that can't use routine methods.

2. Why should we care about it ?

1. Because you are a budding engineer.
2. To grasp fundamental concepts.
3. To develop skills to solve any
problem, rather than only have
specialized training.
4. To deal with practical challenges that
cannot always be solved using routine
schemes.

Newtons Laws of Motion

1. Every object in a state of rest or uniform
motion tends to remain in that state of rest or
uniform motion unless an external force is
applied to it.
2. The magnitude of the force acting on a body
is equal to the rate of change of momentum
and acts in the direction of change in
momentum.
3. Every action has an equal and opposite
reaction.

Static Equilibrium
A body is in static equilibrium if its velocity is
zero or constant.
Newtons First Law of Motion: Every object in a
state of rest or uniform motion tends to remain
in that state of rest or uniform motion unless an
external force is applied to it.

In other words.
All the external forces acting on a body should
balance each other to maintain its state of rest
or uniform motion.
OR

balance each other to maintain its STATIC
EQUILIBRIUM

Principle of Transmissibility

A force can be applied anywhere along the line

of action without disturbing the equilibrium of
the body.
This is true only for a rigid body.

22

Degree of Freedom (dof) of a rigid

body
Definitions:
A 3D rigid body has the possibility of 6
mutually independent motions. These are
called the 6 degrees of freedom of the body.
The degrees of freedom of a system is the
number of independent motions in some
reference which is required to fully locate the
system in that reference.

Free Body Diagram of a system of

rigid bodies
A free body is a rigid body that is free of any
external constraints or supports.
External constraints can be represented by
equivalent reactions on the body or system of
bodies.
