Aspen HYSYS Petroleum Refining Case

This document provides steps for estimating fouling resistance for refinery heat exchangers using Aspen HYSYS and an Aspen Simulation Workbook. The steps include: 1) Creating a Shell & Tube Exchanger Design/Rating utility in HYSYS; 2) Selecting a heat exchanger and attaching it to the utility; 3) Specifying maximum fouling and transferring geometry to estimate fouling factors; 4) Specifying plant data in the utility; 5) Running the utility to calculate fouling resistances. The Aspen Simulation Workbook contains interfaces, data transfer, and repository sheets linked to HYSYS variables and utilities to automate fouling resistance calculations.

Aspen HYSYS Petroleum Refining Case:

Please find the detail steps on how to model the refinery preheat train using Aspen
HYSYS Petroleum
http://support.aspentech.com/webteamasp/KB.asp?ID=131083
Please note that in order to work with Shell & Tube Exchanger Design/Rating Utility,
you will need HYSYS EP-31.
Estimate Fouling Resistance for Refinery Heat Exchangers:
Step-1 Please create a Shell & Tube Exchanger Design/Rating utility from Tools >
Utilities menu

Step-2 Please select the heat exchanger and attach it with utility.

Step-3 On the calculation page, please specify Maximum Fouling (this will
estimate the fouling factors) and press the button Transfer Geometry From
Selected Heat Exchanger (this will populate the geometry).

Step-4 Specify the plant data in Inputs > Process page.

Step 5 Press Run button on Inputs > Exchanger page and this will calculate the
fouling resistances on Results > Performance page.

Step-6 Aspen Simulation Workbook setup

Spreadsheet Interface has all the inputs and outputs
Spreadsheet Data Transfer has the data transfer set up.
Spreadsheet Data Repository has the archived values of fouling resistances.
Inputs:
Hot Stream Flow, Cold Stream Flow, Hot Stream Temperature In, Hot Stream
Temperature Out, Cold Stream Temperature In and the decision whether the heat
exchanger is cleaned or not.
Outputs:
Fouling resistances, Duty, Furnace outlet

Hysys utilities variables are setup in Aspen Simulation Workbook variable organizers
using variable navigator

The data transfer tables are setup in Data Transfer sheet where the model
variables are linked. When user add/remove heat exchangers model tables needs to
be modified.

It should be noted that buttons involved in this Aspen Simulation Workbook

involves, excel macros such as
CopyTemperatures and CopyMassFlows This transfers the plant data to HYSYS
utility. When the topology is modified, the excel range that is being copied and
paste needs to be modified.
runUtilForAll This runs the HYSYS Shell and Tube Design/Rating utility. Any new
utility being added/deleted/renamed requires change in this vbmacro.
CopyFoulingFactors This transfers HYSYS calculated results from excel sheet Data
Transfer to Interface. Any changes in topology requires modification in this
macro.
There is a data repository worksheet, user can go here to deposit fouling factors for
various timestamps. Please look at macro ArchieveData for this.
