Unit 3 Unsymmetrical Fault Analysis

1) Develop an equivalent network showing the interconnection of sequence network to

simulate a double line to ground fault.
2) A synchronous generator is rated 25 MVA, 11 kV star connected with neutral point
solidly grounded. The generator is operating at no load at rated voltage. The reactances of
generator are X"= X2= 0.20 p.u., X0= 0.08 p.u. Calculate the symmetrical sub transient
line currents for, a) LG fault, b) LL fault, c) LLG fault.
3) Give the general procedure used in the analysis of various types of shunt faults. Derive
the relationship to determine the fault current for single line to ground fault. Draw an
equivalent network showing the interconnection of sequence network to simulate LG
fault.
4) A salient pole generator without dampers is rated 20 MVA, 13.8 kV and has a direct axis
sub transient reactance of 0.25 p.u. The negative and zero sequence reactances are
respectively, 0.35 and 0.10 p.u. The neutral of generator is solidly grounded. Find the sub
transient currents and line to line voltages at the fault under sub transient condition when
a line to line fault occurs at the terminals of generator. Assume that generator is unloaded
and operating at rated terminal voltage when the fault occurs. Neglect resistances.
5) Draw the sequence networks for the system shown in fig. below. Determine the fault
current when double line to ground fault occurs at pt. F. The p.u. reactances all referred to
the same base are as follows: Both the generators are generating 1 p.u. voltage.

6) Draw the equivalent circuit for line to line fault when fault occurs through impedance Z f
on line a & b. Line c is healthy.
7) A 3 phase, 10 MVA, 11 kV generator with a solidly earthed neutral point supplies a
feeder the relevant impedances of generator and feeders in ohms are
Generator: X0= j0.4, X1= j1.2, X2= j0.9
Feeder: X0= j3.0, X1= j1.0, X2= j1.0
If a line to ground fault occurs on the far end of feeder, calculate i) the magnitude of
current, ii) line to neutral voltage at generator terminal.
8) A double line to ground fault occurs on phases b & c, at pt. P in the circuit whose single
line diagram is shown below. Determine sub transient current in all phases of machine 1
and voltages at fault pt. Neglect prefault current. Assume that machine 1 is alternator and
machine 2 is synchronous motor operating rated voltage. Both the machines are rated
1.25 MVA, 600 V with reactances X"= X 2= 8%, X0= 4%. Each 3 phase transformer is
rated 1.25 MVA, 600 V delta/4160 V star with leakage reactance of 5%. The reactances
of transmission line are, X1=X2= 12%, X0= 40% on a base of 1.25 MVA, 600 V.

9) A 50 MVA, 11 kV, 3 phase synchronous generator was subjected to different types of

faults. The fault currants are as follows:
LG: 4200 Amp, LL: 2600 Amp, LLL: 2000 Amp. The generator neutral is solidly
grounded. Find the p.u. values of their sequence reactances of the generator.
10) A star point of a 3 kV, 3 MVA, 3 phase synchronous generator is solidly grounded. Its
positive, negative and zero sequence reactances are 2.4 , 0.45 and 0.3 respectively.
The generator operating unloaded, sustain a resistive fault a phase and ground. This fault
has a resistance of 1.2. Calculate the fault current and the voltage to ground of a phase.
