Mechanical Vibrations: Fall 2016

This document discusses key concepts in mechanical vibrations from a lecture at the University of Engineering and Technology Lahore. It defines important terms like frequency of oscillation, natural frequency, and phase angle. The lecture introduces harmonic analysis, explaining that any periodic function can be represented by a series of harmonically related sine and cosine terms. It provides examples of periodic functions and discusses using numerical integration like the trapezoidal rule to calculate the coefficients needed to represent a periodic function through harmonic analysis.

Definitions

Frequency of oscillation: The number of cycle per unit time is called

frequency of oscillation

Sometimes f is also referred as linear frequency and its units are hertz

Natural frequency: If a system is left to vibrate on its own after initial

disturbance, then the frequency with which is vibrates is called natural
frequency

Phase angle: Amount of angle by which one signal leads or lags by

another signal of same frequency

Lets consider two signals of same frequency:

Harmonic Analysis

Any periodic function can be represented by a series of sin and cosine

which are harmonically related

When is a function f(t) periodic though?

A function is periodic if there is a positive, constant, and finite

Note:

is called the period of the function
