Learning objectives of this chapter are to:
Governing Equation
For writing GE:
Determine the static equilibrium position of the system and measure the
displacement of the mass from its static equilibrium position
Draw free-body diagram of the mass to indicate all the forces acting on the
mass
Apply Newtons second law of motion (or other methods) on the mass to
obtain GE of the system
GE by DAlemberts Principle
DAlemberts Method states that virtual work done by all real and fictitious forces
is zero
In a simple spring-mass system, spring force is real force and inertia force is
fictitious force
When the total virtual work done by all the forces is set equal to zero, we obtain
