Lesson 3 - How To Use A Punnett Square

To complete a Punnett square for a monohybrid cross, set it up with the genotypes of the parents written above and to the left. The dominant allele is written first when writing offspring genotypes. You may be asked to determine the cross of the F1 generation, which is the first generation of offspring from the original parents. A test cross of the F1 offspring can then be done by crossing a homozygous dominant with a homozygous recessive.

How to: Punnett Squares for Monohybrid Crosses

Follow the steps to complete your own Punnett squares.

This is how we
set up a
Punnett square
correctly
NOTE: The
dominant allele
is always written
before the
recessive allele
when we write
the genotypes of
the offspring.

You may
be
asked in the
exam to
determine the
cross of the F1
Generation- The
F1 generation is
the first
generation of
offspring
produced by the
parents.

See Step 5 for how we would show a test cross between the first generation
of offspring produced by a homozygous dominant (TT) parent and a
homozygous recessive (tt) parent.

Remember: In
this example, the
F1 generation
was formed by
crossing a
homozygous
dominant
organism (TT)
with a
homozygous
recessive
