NK Math Pattern Lesson

Math Lesson Plan: Patterns

Grade: kindergarten & nursery


Subject: Math
Time Frame: aprx 30 minutes
Learner characteristics:
about 70% of the students are new Canadians and have some language needs.
2 students struggle to stay focused frequently and often talk during lessons
Equal boys VS girls
E.A. available in class as well.
Materials needed:
Smart Board and computer
Online access to games
Manipulatives- cubes, bears, etc.
Xylophone/Ukulele
Pipe cleaners and beads (aprx 12 each) for the whole class.
Small cups or plates to hold the beads.
Book: The Necklace
SLO: K.PR.1. Demonstrate an understanding of repeating patterns (two or
three elements) by
identifying
reproducing
extending
creating
patterns using manipulatives, sounds, and actions.
Behavioural Objective: Students will produce a pattern of three manipulatives on
their own by creating a bracelet.
Activate:
Sing Head and Shoulders. Follow the hand movements. Talk about how the hand
movements repeat.
Read a book about patterns The Necklace. Call on children to depict the patterns in
the book.
Aquire:
Use smart board to play games

Teach patterns of colours/shapes Cubes, math bears, or paper cut outs. AABB patterns
for those who are ready. (games above work with colours) Use a variety of objects. Ie,
One red bear, one yellow square, etc.
Demonstrate first patterns, and then call upon specific children asking them what comes
next. Ask students to point out patterns around the room.
Teach patterns of music play a tune on a xylophone, or ukulele. ABCABC
Teach active patterns arms up, down, up down. Touch toes, knees, nose, toes, knees,
nose. ABAB/ABCABC
Use the children to make a pattern: Boy/Girl/b/g or Brown hair, blonde hair, etc. Bring
up 4 students, then ask the students what they think the pattern is.
If there is extra time, or the students are not understanding: Break the class into 2 or 3
groups and have one teacher work on one type (colours/active/music) then switch.
Adaptations:
With the two learners who have difficulty learning, and the lower level Nursery
children, do a modified more active lesson with the Educational Assistant in the
library so they stay engaged.
Apply:
At their table groups each student will make a 3 colour bracelet with that pattern on a
pipe cleaner. ABC, or AABBCC, etc.
Assessment:
At their tables, or on the carpet afterwards ask students to share their pattern with their
friends. (ie, blue, green, purple, blue, green, purple, etc) Observational Assessment
Students will be able to state their pattern sequence and follow it on their bracelet.
