Worlds first sustainable

convention centre in Dublin

Image of the spectacular facade of the building near the bridge by Calatrava

The new Convention Centre Dublin (CCD) designed by Kevin Roche, John
Dinkeloo and Associates LLC, and built by Treasury Holdings Limited and John Sisk
& Son Limited (who set up a joint venture for this project) is a new and inspiring
way of conceiving a space for conferences and cultural events. Figueras has made
a small but important contribution to this massive project by outfitting the main
auditorium.
The building, located on the Spencer Dock, features a cutting-edge design based
on a stunning glass cylinder that skewers the building from top to bottom, emerging
to form a spectacular glass atrium. The CCD, with a 2000-seat auditorium and
4500 square metres of exhibition space, is recognized as the worlds first carbon
neutral convention centre and meets the highest standards of environmental
sustainability. In the selection of construction processes and materials, the focus
was on choosing the most ecological alternatives available.

needed to accommodate the diverse range of events that will take place at the
centre. The CCDs programme makes it essential that the space can be quickly
adapted to any type of event, from a corporate convention to a world-class
concert. Chairs and tables can be quickly removed to create a raised stage for an
orchestra, and just as easily put back where they belong when the performance is
over. The generously dimensioned Megaseat used for this installation features a fire
barrier and an acoustic absorption system that optimizes acoustics for crystal-clear
sound. Combined with the F-45 foldaway work table, it is the perfect solution for
conferences and lengthy sessions.

The firm of Kevin Roche John Dinkeloo and Associates LLC (KRJDA), located just outside New
Haven, Connecticut, is a direct outgrowth of Eero Saarinen and Associates, which was originally
established in 1950.
Kevin Roche John Dinkeloo and Associates is engaged in major projects throughout the Unites
States, Europe and Asia. Kevin Roche, who is responsible for all of the designs for the firm, has
designed a variety of institutional and corporate projects. For the past 42 years, he has been the
architect for the master plan and expansion of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
The firm received the American Institute of Architects 1974 Architectural Firm Award and more
recently the firm was the recipient of the 1995 American Institute of Architects 25-Year Award for
the Ford Foundation Headquarters in New York City. In 1982, Kevin Roche received the Pritzker
Architectural Prize and in 1993, he received the AlA Gold Medal.

Director UK & IRL

Over the course of its nearly 80-year history, Figueras International

Seating has achieved an enviable position in the global market for high
quality collective seating systems for conventions centres, conferences
rooms, sports facilities, waiting areas (e.g., airports, railway and bus
stations), schools and universities, concert halls, theatres, cinemas and
all kinds of multi-purpose rooms. As a result, we can count more than
40,000 references worldwide.

We always considered the United Kingdom as

the design capital and a standard-bearer for
movements at the forefront of architecture. Our
company is based on innovation and design
and the United Kingdom, as vibrant cradle for
architectural design, represents a perfect market
for a further development.
We count a long history of fruitful relations and successful projects in
the UK. We cooperated on emblematic public buildings such as the
Sage Gateshead, Glasgows Science Centre and the Greenwich Royal
Planetarium. Figueras has also fitted seating in the Sheffield City Hall, the
Symphony Hall and the International Convention Centre in Birmingham,
the National Library of Wales and more recently the Dublin Conference
Centre. As for the private buildings, we have been cooperating on the
headquarters of major companies such as Canon, Mercedes Benz,
Morgan Stanley International, the British Medical Association, the
Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and Fitch Ratings.
At Figueras International Seating, we see our ongoing commitment
to quality as the best way to maintain our high-end positioning in the
British market making sure at the same time that the latest technological
advances can be applied.
Coherent with this concept our Design Centre works in close collaboration
with architects to bring their designs to reality providing the best aesthetic
and functional solution. Globally renowned designers and architects
including Foster & Partners, BDP, Nicholas Grimshaw, Swanke Hayden
Connell, Jean Nouvel, Renzo Piano, Ricardo Bofill or Csar Pelli.
Looking to the future, the expansion of the companys business into the
UK currently presents an opportunity for the business to demonstrate how
excellent seating design can optimise the use of space and maximise
profitability through versatility and multi-functionality. At Figueras we aim
to go beyond the development of new and comfortable products by
creating new concepts for application in seating systems approaches
that respond to market demands and even anticipate needs before they
emerge.

Outstanding architecture and acoustics

In addition to its sublime acoustics, which have earned The Sage Gateshead
recognition as one of the top five auditoriums in the world, the centre is distinguished
by an architectural design that has made it one of the most emblematic buildings
in Gateshead. Norman Foster, the architect responsible for the project, created a
shell-like structure made up of 3000 stainless steel and 250 glass panels that reflect
the waters of the Tyne.

structure. The largest of these, with a total capacity of 1700 spectators, has a
slightly concave main seating level that is an impressive demonstration of ingenuity.
The arrangement is aimed at ensuring impeccable visibility from any seat in the hall,
with a slope that is barely noticeable. This characteristic was a key consideration
when it came to designing the seats used to furnish the auditorium.

The seat

A special seat
designed by
the architect
Designed by Foster and Partners especially
for this project and given form by Figueras,
these seats can be adjusted individually to
achieve perfect alignment. Each one differs
slightly in height and is adapted to a specific
position determined by the slight curvature of
the floor. This was accomplished by developing
an adjustable mechanism that could be
inserted in the pedestal of the seat to permit
levelling on the curved floor surface. The seat
designed for the main auditorium also features
an air-conditioning diffuser incorporated in the
pedestal base of the seat, which permits more
uniform dispersion of air. Both visibility and
a reduction in energy consumed for heating
and cooling were achieved by focusing on the
design of the seats central pedestal.

THE ARCHITECT

Foster & Partners

bringing together design and innovation
Foster & Partners, the renowned architectural studio headed by Norman Foster, can
trace its origins back to 1967 and has gone by its current name since 1992. Since the
studios inception, it has received more than 190 awards and citations and won over
50 international competitions based on the quality of its designs. The work done by the
practice encompasses a broad range of projects, from the construction of commercial
buildings, airports and private homes to the design of street furniture and home furnishings.
The smallest project undertaken involved the design of a door knob. The practices
accomplishments have led to the opening of offices in Berlin, Frankfurt, Hong Kong, Nmes
and Tokyo.
The work done by Foster & Partners has taken modern architecture in totally new directions
through the creation of structures comprised of metal skeletons, rounded and transparent
roofs, and decorative elements of an organic nature. The studio has established an
international reputation based on impressive references that include the Museum of
Fine Arts in Boston (USA), the Quartermile Masterplan in Edinburgh (UK), Queen Alia
International Airport in Amman (Jordan) and Khan Shatyr Entertainment Centre in Astana
(Kazakhstan) and the National Arena Scotland in Glasgow (UK). Recently, Figueras has the
pleasure to fit up one of the Fosters last projects, Caja Madrid Tower in Madrid (Spain).
