Shamong Township may be in
for some changes in 2017, but
not with its Township Committee.
The committee reorganization
meeting once again saw the
swearing in of Timothy Gimbel
and Michael Di Croce as committee members, and also their nominations and approvals to continue serving as mayor and deputy
mayor, respectively.
We are all looking forward to
a good 2017, Gimbel said.
The meeting started with Di
Croce being sworn in by Township Solicitor Douglas Heinold,
followed by Gimbel with his wife
Nancy at his side. Both chosen by
the public in the November election, they will serve for
three years on township committee.
Gimbel was nominated and approved to serve as mayor for a
one-year term, while Di Croce
was re-nominated and approved
to serve as deputy mayor for a
one-year term.
Committeemen who continue
on the board are Michael Cooney,
Sean Gray and Martin Mozitis.
Gimbel and Di Croce gave their
thanks.

The reorganization meeting
continued with routine matters

such as yearly appointments and

resolutions.

After the reorganization meeting, the regular township meet-

ing began. The committee approved a number of resolutions

and the first reading of two ordinances. Resolutions included a
shared service agreement with
Waterford Township and two
change orders, one for the
Forked Neck Road project and
the other for the 2016 Road Programs. According to Business
Administrator Sue Onorato, the
change orders both involved savings on the projects. Ordinances
approved on first reading were
on establishing the cap bank and
salary ranges for various township officials.
Two items of note discussed at
the meeting included the announcement of Boy Scout Troop
47 collecting Christmas trees as
their day of service project on
Jan. 16 and the township looking
into wireless nodes.
Onorato said a presentation
was made on Verizon Wireless
nodes, asking the township if it
would be interested in putting
nodes throughout the township
that would help boost cell service
in the area. According to Onorato, the township would have its
professionals look further into
the nodes, and if the township
were to consider it, it would be
put on a township committee
agenda as a resolution.

Olt said she was very excited to

come to the board. Olt had previously been on the Evesham Township School District BOE. She
hopes to bring a new set of eyes
and ears and different perspective
to the board.
As technology is (progressing), I think that the board and superintendent have been doing a
phenomenal job. They are way far
ahead, and I would like to continue that charge, Olt said.

47 has designated Monday, Jan. 16
as Martin Luther Kings National
Day of Service for Christmas tree
removal and recycling.
Residents should leave their
trees curbside by 8 a.m. on Jan.

no tinsel, nails or flocking on the
trees, or they will not be picked
up. While the service is free, donations of $15 or more will be appreciated. Please place any donation checks made payable to

Most moves involving New Jersey see people leaving the state
nother year has begun, and
another study has been released that shows New Jersey
is the top state in the nation that residents move out of.
United Van Lines 40th Annual National Movers Study tracks customers
state-to-state migration patterns over
the past year. The results showed that
63 percent of moves involving New Jersey were residents moving out of the
state, with only 37 percent of the
moves being inbound.
The top reasons for moving out of
the state include job (39.96 percent), retirement (30.29 percent) and lifestyle
(20.44 percent). Of all the residents
moving out of the state, 56.7 percent
are 55 years old or older.

This is a problem New Jersey has experienced for some time now. High
taxes, especially, make it difficult for
seniors to remain in their homes after
their children have grown and moved
out.
In their place are younger residents 43.72 percent of people moving
into New Jersey last year were 44 years
old and younger, according to the United Van Lines survey. And these people
are moving into our state mainly for a
job (56 percent) or for their family (23
percent).

The irony, of course, is a main reason why people move into this state
for its excellent public schools is a
main reason why older people move
out because of the high property
taxes associated with those schools.
Its a catch 22 that New Jersey may
never truly solve. Good schools cost
money to run, and if theyre public
schools, a majority of that money is
going to come from the public.
The key is finding that balance between funding our schools properly
and not asking our residents to bear
too big a burden to do so. How can it be
fixed? By coming up with creative solutions to fund schools or, more appropriately, by finding ways to cut costs without cutting the quality of the product.

Animal shelter teams

with UPenn vets
Burlington County Freeholder Director
Bruce Garganio has announced the
Burlington County Animal Shelter will
enter into a partnership with the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary
Medicine to provide medical care to shelter
animals.
Through this partnership, the Penn Vet
Surgical and Anesthesia Training Program will provide our shelter animals with
a complete physical examination, heartworm testing, baseline blood work, and
free spay/neuter surgeries, Garganio
said.
As part of the agreement, transportation of animals to Penn Veterinary Hospital
will
be
provided
by
the
Friends of Burlington County Animal
Shelter.
