EPIPHANY OF THE LORD

JANUARY 8, 2017
culture of encounter, and in doing so to look
beyond our own needs and wants to those of
others around us. In the homily given at his first
Pentecost as pope, he emphasized the
importance of encounter in the Christian faith:
For me this word is very important. Encounter
with others. Why? Because faith is an encounter
with Jesus, and we must do what Jesus does:
encounter others. With respect to migrants, too
often in our contemporary culture we fail to
encounter them as persons, and instead look at
them as others or render them invisible. We do
not take the time to engage migrants in a
meaningful way, as fellow children of God, but
remain aloof to their presence and suspicious of
their intentions. During this National Migration
Week, let us all take the opportunity to engage
migrants as community members and neighbors
all of whom are worthy of our attention and
support.

Pastors Corner
My dear brothers and sisters,
This weekend we celebrate the Feast of the
Epiphany when we recall the arrival of the Magi
at Bethlehem and the presentation of their gifts
of gold, frankincense and myrrh. These unique
gifts might lead us to question why they brought
those three particular gifts and so I offer for your
reflection a passage from the spiritual writer
Abbot Marmion, O.S.B. who wrote:
The symbolism of the gifts therefore refers both
to the One to whom they are offered and to
those who present them. Gold, the most precious
of metals, is the symbol of royalty; it denotes, on
the other hand, the love and fidelity that
everyone owes to his prince. Incense is
universally acknowledged to be the symbol of
divine worship; it is offered to God alone. In
preparing this gift, the Magi showed that they
had in view to proclaim the Divinity of Him Whose
Birth was announced by the star, and to confess
this Divinity by the supreme adoration that can
be rendered to God alone. Finally, they had
been inspired to bring Him myrrh. What would
they show by this myrrh which is used to dress
wounds, and to embalm the dead? This gift
signified that Christ was Man, a Man capable of
suffering, who would one day die. The myrrh also
symbolized the spirit of penance and immolation
which ought to characterize the life of the
disciples of the Crucified.

SALVATION FOR ALL

The Lord Jesus is come to save all humankind, Jews
and non-Jews alike. Today we feast the revelation
of that great mystery. Gods grace-filled covenant
is opened up to all. The wise men, and all wise
women and men seeing with a childs eyes, discover the star-marked babe in the arms of his
mother, Mary. Humbly offering their gifts, they receive the Gospel, the good news of the Lords arrival amongst his people. God shows himself to us in
Jesus and so begins his saving work for each of us.
Come let us adore him!
