Differential Equations (4 credits)

Spring 2014

We meet: Tu, Fri 8:30 a.m - 9:55 a.m in Niligiri 104
Office Hours: Tu, Fri 10:00 - 11:00 a.m in N 309 or by appointment
Book: Erwin Kreyszig, Advanced Engineering Mathematics, Wiley and Goerge F. Simmons, Differential
Equations With Applications and Historical Notes
Syllabus: Most of Chapters 1 - 6, 11, 12 from Kreyszig.
Prerequisite: Calculus - Differentiation and Integration

Attendance and Classroom Policy: I expect you to be on time for the class and stay the whole class
period. Attendance will be given if you are in class before 8:35 a.m. Cellphones and other electronic
devices must be switched off during class hours- that also means no texting during class hours. Please
respect other students and the teacher.

Tests, Quizzes and the Final Exam:

2 Mid-terms will account for 25% each of your final grade. No make-up tests will be given. If you

miss a test and you have a valid excuse you may come and talk to me about it.

Final Exam will account for 30 % of your final grade.

Quizzes will account for 20% of your final grade. Pop quizzes may be given. No make-up quizzes

will be given.

The final exam is mostly comprehensive and compulsory.

Grading Scale: (Subject to minor changes depending on performance of class)


95 - 100% A

80 - 84% B

85 - 94% A-

75-79 % B-

65 - 74% C
60 - 64% C-

40 - 59% D
< 40% F

Academic Integrity: Cheating or copying in this course (assignment, quiz and/or test) will result in a
zero grade for the test/exam/quiz.

As with all math courses you need to keep up with the classes. Understand the concepts as and when
they are taught. Do not wait till the last minue. I am always available for help.
