Dear

Friends,

Welcome to the November issue of your neighborhood newsletter. In celebration of fall, we have a true autumn admirer's home
as our monthly residential feature. Please be sure to check out
Jane Gilmer's lovely residence on pages 12-13. Her story is sure
to warm your heart.
Also specific to the season, we have Tiffany Rooney's pumpkin
bar recipe on page 45. This may be the perfectly portable answer

to pie...if there are any leftovers. Fall fashions are still a thing,
even if we live in Arizona. See Megan Gajeski's ideas to convert
your summer pieces to fall on page 46.
Holidays mean family and family, for many of us, includes our dogs.
This is certainly the case for Stephen Biles and his business, Chandler Dogs 24/7. This avid dog lover's story about building better
boarding can be found on pages 52-53. Ginger Monkey is open for
business, complete with a dog-friendly patio and menu. Tap into this
new grill and pub on pages 50-51. Of course, we have our pet of the
month feature as well. Meet Chester and Chief on page 20.
If you are considering the addition of a pet this holiday season,
we encourage you to consider adoption. I truly believe that my
dog knows that she was rescued and is thankful every day. It is
a joy to wake up to my perfect mutt, Dani, bursting with love and
grateful to be alive. She truly embodies "it's all good" whether
she's choosing to lay in a pile of hot rocks, playing dolls with my
daughter, or when she comes home to check that her food bowl is
still in place. Rescue dogs epitomize loyalty and thanksgiving.
Best to you and your family this holiday season and always,

Same Day Crowns

Jane Gilmer

By Wendy Bates
Images by Chrissy Ray Photography

Butch and Jane Gilmer bought their single story home in Ocotillo twenty years ago. I had a
chance to sit down with Jane this month and talk with her about her personal style and what
makes her home special.

I am not contemporary. I like to have

many pieces that are special to my
heart, says Jane.

Butch and Jane met when they were only 13 and 14, growing up in Tennessee. After high
school, Butch joined the military and went to college. Jane went to college and became a
teacher. They married in their mid-twenties and with Butchs career, were able to travel all
over the southeastern U.S., including Georgia, North Carolina and Alabama. After many
years and three wonderful kids, the couple was transferred to the Phoenix area. Jane looked
in Scottsdale and Ahwatukee but when she saw their home in Ocotillo, she instantly knew it
was the one.

One of those pieces would be her

mothers Chicago Cable Company
push organ from the 1800s. She also
has a room totally dedicated to her
heard of African animal sculptures.
It's an African motif even down to
the furniture and bedding.

One key piece in the Gilmers home is the baby grand piano that sits stately in the formal
living room. Adorning the top are many mementos, including a photo of Jane being crowned
Ms. Senior Arizona in 2009.

Another room includes paintings of

the many lighthouses she and Butch
were able to visit in North Carolina.
This room also holds Butchs great
grandmothers quilt, which won an
award at the Worlds Fair.

High FICO Scores Saves You Thousands!
Jane has many creative hobbies and collections, including needlepoint, crafting cakes and painting china. Her painted plates, bowls
and floral boxes adorn her oversized countertop in the kitchen and
are displayed throughout her beautifully traditional home.

Happy Thanksgiving, Jane!

The same year that Jane won the pageant, she lost her beloved husband, Butch. She continued her duties as Ms. Arizona, leaving her with a year of great happiness and sadness. Today,
Jane has many photos of Butch, her children, family and friends throughout her home.

Fall is Janes favorite season and she starts decorating in September

every year. English cottage scenes inspire her, as does shopping for
accessories at Macys and Kirklands. She has collected many floral
arrangements, pumpkins and candles through the years. Jane loves
to decorate and entertain friends and family during the holidays.

PS: In 2010, Jane crowned her very good friend Dr. Madelaine
Paschal the new Ms. Senior Arizona. Maddy and her husband,
Gordon, are on the front cover of this issue.

FOR ALL OF YOUR GLASS NEEDS!

Its the place where everyone always ends up at parties, right?

The kitchen counter. Theres a spacious dining room, a pool table
and a rec room they could visit. But why? Somehow, the kitchen
is always the hot spot, even if everyones squeezed in. Its the best
case for more counter space entertaining.
With more people nesting and throwing small gatherings instead
of posh dinner parties, the kitchen countertop plays host to conversation, noshing, sipping and kibitzing over politics and parent-

ing. Why not take the opportunity to make yours more spacious,
appealing, functional and durable?
Check out the range of options at your fingertips when it comes
to countertop surfaces regarding style, functionality, care and
keeping:
Granites got it going on: beauty and brawn. Its no wonder
many families fall in love with granite. This natural stone scores
points for resiliency and easy care. Each slab is unique and
available in a myriad of colors. Best granites scratch resistant
surface means you can let the kids play Chef and cut, splice and
dice without worry.
Marble is marvelous, but high maintenance. If there is
anything as understated and luxurious as white marble, we want
to know about it. You can dress marble up for a rich look or keep
it clean and contemporary or country chic. Many are choosing
the popular White Carrera marble, a more affordable price point
than others. However, its a more porous stone, leaving it a bit
more vulnerable to scratches and stains. We recommend this for
those who love a beautiful look but whose kitchens arent quite as
busy as a Chopped chefs.
Quartzite is the quite the compromise. For those who want
it all the durability of granite and the sleek look of marble
quartzite offers the perfect middle ground. White Macaubas is
an option that offers up the lighter coloring and gray patterning
marble is known for, but stands up a bit more to wear-and-tear.
Sealing is still a great idea. A little effort now goes a long way in
the future!
Whatever your choices, upgrading your countertops in the
kitchen adds aesthetic and financial value to your home. If guests
are going to end up in the kitchen anyway, its the best case for
more countertop space!

Avocado

Where to start
Its been said that when you love someone, you
embrace their pastand their future. But when you
know, up front, that the future may be less than
youd hope for and much less than you have learned
to expect, well then, you just sit back and enjoy the
ridewhats left of it. And thats how it is when
you fall in love as a senior citizen with another
senior. Its not easy learning to blend, mix, cultivate, water, grow and harvestand Im not talking
about gardens. Im talking relationships that begin
when youre old and continue through older, until
youre more old than anything else and crotchety,
and bent, and achy, and altogether tired. Is it even
possible? Yes! Is it even fair? Well, not quite. Will
you even believe it when it happens? Almost. Can
you even muster the energy to fall in love againfor
the last time in your life? Absolutely!
You see, Im in the produce aisle one day, looking
for avocados. There are varieties of these oddshaped, smooth-tasting fruits in varying degrees
of color and texture. Im lost in the moment. Is
one variety better than another? Is the softer
one better than the firmer one? Is the roughskinned one as delectable as the smooth-skinned
one? I pick up one and then the other and then
my mind begins to wander. Are we all a little
like avocados? Im chuckling to myself when
I notice a nice-looking older guy checking out
the cantaloupes. Is he thinking the same thing I
am? One is more round, more firm, less bumpy,
and more fragrant than the others? Oh, noIve
totally lost it! I leave without an avocado or
anything else. "Im officially old," I mutter.
Then, a week later, I see the same guy looking at
condos, and hes right in front of me! I may look
like an avocado, I think, but I feel like a ripe tomato!
Im flushed with color, a little warm, and all mushy
inside...for the first time in years! And Im still
comparing myself to fruit! Oh Lord, help me! I
stammer my name as I put my hand out for his. He
takes it! Now, Im really done! He smiles! I cant
really remember what I did except that I remember
thinking that this salad just might be greattossed,
lost or wilted and I laugh out loud. And this is how
Gordon and I met.
It was almost a year later after many movies and
salads, that Gordon decides to tell me that he is a

retired cinematographer from Hollywood. I think

about that and how I must look to him. Bumpy?
Odd-shaped? Less firm? (Back to produce?) I
squirm, ponder, and then realize that this man, the
cameraman, as he refers to himself, isnt looking
through that relentless lens anymore. Instead, he
and I have seen through the faade of Hollywood
many years ago and are now holding on to time and
to each other.
I find out over the next few months that he was
born in Hollywood, so what else was he supposed
to do? Everyone worked in the business and he
was no exception. His career in motion pictures
spanned four decades. He began when filmmakers were breaking ground on epic movies like
The Poseidon Adventure, Patton, Overboard (the
original), and Escape from Alcatraz (and yes, he
filmed Clint Eastwood walking naked down the
middle of the prisons main hallwayI almost died
when I heard that!), all of which he experienced
through his shutter and lens. He tells secrets, tales,
truths, and stories about the likes of Clint, Angie
Dickinson, George C. Scott, and even Pavarotti! He
learned way too much about the stars, from their
bare bodies to some trying to stay alive in eelinfested turbulent seas, to hoards on a battlefield,
and one even singing opera and spitting into his
camera.and into his eyes. And speaking of spitting, John Wayne spit a wad of tobacco juice onto
one of Gordons brand new cowboy bootsoh, well.
And while the movies were all the rage, so were
the series on television. Gordon and his camera
were on the sets of new series like Midnight Caller,
Hill Street Blues, Hart to Hart, Northern Exposure,
and Police Woman, to name a few. This remarkable
man, with his enviable position behind the camera,
lit faces for the best of them.

for the first time in my life and won! After the initial shock wore off, I went on to be the first runnerup in the Ms. Senior America pageant but like I was
told by one of my kids, if you arent first, youre
last! So much for beauty contests. I would go on
to host my own live TV segment called Seniors on
the Move for six more years, write four books, a
monthly column for the best community magazine
in America (which you are presently reading), and
begin to sing professionally. Gordon would become
my lighting guy and roadie, and together we would
start down the last phase of our livestogether,
enjoying it all.
What an adventure these past twelve years have
been! My produce shopping has been relinquished
to Gordon who enjoys picking everything outbut
always says he got the best tomato in the bunch. I
laughbecause you see, we have discovered that
all fruit is good, even the older varieties. And no
matter what the covering looks like or feels like,
its whats inside that counts. And my avocado is
just rightgood skin, soft on the inside with a solid
core.thats my Gordon. And Im his Maddy. I like
when he calls me that. We blend.

My Trip to the White House

Photos and story submitted by Scarlet Summers

My name is Scarlet Summers. I am 11 years old, and Im in the

sixth grade at CTA Independence. I had a really exciting summer because I won a recipe contest called the Healthy Lunchtime
Challenge, and had the opportunity to attend the Kid State Dinner at the White House in July. There were fifty-six kids there,
one from each state and one for each of the six territories. I was
representing the state of Arizona. One parent also got to go, so
my mom came with me. My dad said he lost the coin toss, whatever that means.
The day before the Kid State Dinner, we had a private tour of Julia
Childs kitchen at the Smithsonian Museum of American History.
It was really neat to see all the things that were in her personal
kitchen, especially since I had just watched the movie Julie & Julia
on the plane ride to D.C. I also got to attend cooking classes at a
really cool culinary school called LAcademie de Cuisine.

The morning of the State Dinner, I was so excited, and I have to

admit, a little nervous too. We all rode a big bus from our hotel
to the White House. After about thirty minutes of major security

checks, we were formally introduced by a news anchor in D.C.

We walked across the same main hallway that all the other Heads
of State have walked across before every State Dinner that has
been held in the White House. There were a lot of news reporters taking our picture, which was a really weird feeling. There
was lots of entertainment in a few different rooms before the
actual State Dinner, which by the way, was actually a luncheon
that they called a State Dinner. We saw jugglers, listened to
the United States Marine Band, got to meet Michelle Obama in
person, and also got to meet Rachael Ray. I kept thinking I should
be pinching myself because it didnt seem real.
Then we sat down at our assigned seats for our luncheon.
Michelle Obama was the hostess, and she had some very inspiring things to say. She motivated me to start my own nonprofit
organization to help everyone in our community have access to
healthy food. It is still in the works, but Im really excited to get
it going. Our lunch was served on fine china from when Ronald
Reagan was president, and the color was called Reagan Red. We
ate a really delicious three-course meal, and then during our
dessert, we got to see the cast from Walt Disney World perform a
mini-musical production of The Jungle Book.
It was truly the best day I have ever had, which made it my best
summer ever!!!

A No Ceiling

Parents are always looking for ways to enhance their children's

achievement level in school. Achievement implies growth and
eventual mastery of academic skills; the goal of every teacher, for
every student, in every subject. The way to accomplish this is by
means of a teaching technique called "Skills Grouping," the prac-

for instruction.
Expanding upon what works
"Skill Grouping" is not new. Not all schools, however, utilize this
teaching method. Most utilize the exact same curriculum and
textbooks without considering each group's skill level. Generally, if there are two different ability groups in a typical classroom, they both use the same textbook. At New Vistas, while
having always used this teaching technique, we have expanded
upon it in several important ways. We perform extensive testing
to determine how best to specialize the curriculum according to
each skill group. Then we utilize textbooks which reflect each
group's unique levels. This accomplishes several goals important
to parents and students alike:

work. This removes a common complaint of parents that schools only offer
materials which assure mastery at the lowest common denominator.
Why is this approach not utilized universally?
So, why doesn't every school utilize skills grouping to obtain positive outcomes? Usually for very practical reasons: Skills grouping takes a large
specially trained teaching team. It also means that different curriculum and
textbooks must be purchased and employed by each teacher within the classroom. Additionally, use of skills grouping requires that a battery of assessment
testing tools be utilized to determine individual student achievement levels. All
of these considerations add up to budgetary constraints and most frequently

To quote noted Johns Hopkins education researchers, James and Chen-Lin Kulik, "Without acceleration achieved by means of Grouping for all academic abilities, achievement levels are sure to fall
dramatically." Is this what has happened in our
schools across the U.S.? The Kuliks also assert:
"No one can be certain that there would be a way to
repair the long-term harm done to children."
About New Vistas Center for Education:
New Vistas Center for Education, named a Top Ten School by Johns
Hopkins University CTY, and Top Science and Engineering School in
Arizona by Intel, Helios, et al. founded in 1979, is an accelerated, private
pre-school through sixth grade located at: 670 North Arizona Avenue,
Suite 35, Chandler, AZ 85225. Currently, New Vistas is celebrating their
37th anniversary.

1. Speed of Accomplishment. Students can be more effectively instructed because they accomplish more and move more
quickly - an important consideration when the goal is mastery of
subject matter. Grouping accelerates the time it takes to achieve
mastery and allows students the opportunity to excel on nationally normed tests. Some students even go from average to highly
advanced ranges on testing.
2. Ceiling to learning is removed. What does this mean?
We have often seen high-achieving students in elementary grades
that are ready to learn statistics/probability, geometry, and
pre-algebra long before those topics are introduced in the typical classroom. If the advanced material is presented, the gifted
students will learn it.
3. Students remain challenged. When the ceiling to
learning is removed students excel at higher and higher levels,
thus, eliminating boredom and rewarding achievement and hard

where it began: wanting to help instill in her students the knowledge
that life will be hard and they must persevere; they will be critiqued
and thats okay. After a brief moment of thought, she quotes actress,

clear, concise and unmistakable message, when faced with adversity,
Dont change the goal; change the path.

When Terrorism Struck the U.S.?

By Christine Rees
Photos by Allie Hill

Unfortunately, I vividly remember this day all too well, as I am sure you do too. We
were living in Kansas and I was pregnant with my oldest daughter, making breakfast. The Today Show was on in the background when Katie Couric announced the
horrific attacks on the United States of America. I was stunned with emotion and
sadness. For myself and others, 9/11 was a pivotal moment, striking fear and pain
in hearts worldwide. On this terrible day in 2001, four airliners were hijacked by
Al Qaeda militants with the intention of mass destruction on domestic soil including the World Trade Center's Twin Towers, Washington D.C., and Pennsylvania.
The death toll reached over 3,000, including 400 police officers and firefighters.
One local organization called the 100 Club of Arizona recently sought to honor
those who were killed while providing aid to those still in need after the 9/11
attacks. The 100 Club issued a challenge to all police, fire, first responders, and
supporters to climb 110 floors, simulating approximately 2,071 steps, which was
the number of steps in the Twin Towers. The Tower Climb Challenge was held on
September 9th of this year simultaneously at NAU, U of A, and ASU, with proceeds
being split between the 100 Club of Arizona and a locally represented non-profit focusing on the military. Combined, there were almost 2,000 participants, with each
receiving a dri-fit shirt and a commemorative coin. The event was memorable and
emotional for all who walked the steps or worked to create the challenge. Take a
look at the video recap at www.911TowerChallenge.org. I promise youll be moved.
For those of you less familiar with the 100 Club of Arizona, it's a non-profit organization that works to provide support to families of first responders killed in
the line of duty or officers or firefighters who are severely injured. They take
great pride in helping individuals with the most difficult times in their lives.
Benefits vary based on the need. The 100 Club can only give away what they

M e lt Away with Hot Stones

Ever feel like, Hey, I really need some relaxation time! Man my
muscles are tired, and Im worn down. Then maybe it's time you
looked into a good massage, but not just your basic run of the mill
massage. How about trying something new?

Hot stone massage is a specialty treatment where the therapist uses

smooth, heated stones as an extension of their own hands, or places
them on specific points of the body. The heat can be both deeply
relaxing and help warm up tight muscles, so the therapist can work
more deeply, more quickly.
This therapy comes from an ancient Native American ritual used
to treat aching muscles, but the modern revival of hot stones

Most spas offer their own versions of

hot stone massage. They might call
it lava stone massage, river rock massage, warm stone massage, and so on.
A hot stone massage, however, takes a
lot of skill and sensitivity on the part
of the therapist.
The quality of the treatment depends on how well the therapist has
been trained, how skilled he or she
is, and whether he or she enjoys doing the treatment.

Katz is a very intelligent and dedicated teacher, she is also kind, dryhumored, and understanding. She believes a classroom should have
structure, organization, planning, routine, and a positive attitude.
One thing Mrs. Katz loves about teaching is that she learns as much
from her students as they learn from her. She also enjoys also how
hard her students work, and how they challenge her daily with
great questions. When asked what she loves most about Hancock
Elementary, she talks about the parents, the PTO, the schools front
office staff, and team involvement. She is quick to mention that her
daughter, Jordan, attends another CUSD school, and she sees similar positives there as well.

Mrs. Katz decided to become a teacher because her second-grade

teacher made it look fun. She describes her teacher self as impactful, nurturing, organized, engaging and successful, and she has open
rapport with kids and parents. As one of her students, I believe the
work Mrs. Katz assigns is challenging but manageable. Also, she
makes learning fun for my classmates and me by having discussions about our various interests and questions. She motivates her
students by learning and addressing topics of interest to them, and
by making sure they feel successful.

Mrs. Katz and her husband are expecting their second child in early

Approximately 10 million women in this country take oral contraceptives, or birth control pills, daily, making it one of the most

The liver is responsible for metabolizing the estrogen and

progestin hormones so they may be eliminated from the
body. To do this, vitamin B-6, folic acid, and vitamin B-12
(among others) act as essential co-factors for these metabolic
processes. Over time, if these vitamins are not ingested in the
diet at sufficient amounts, the bodys stores can
become depleted.
B vitamins are also co-factors in the enzymatic processes to
turn tryptophan (an amino acid from protein) into serotonin.
Serotonin is a neurotransmitter called the feel-good
chemical; its primary role is mood regulation, but also plays
a role in cognitive function like memory formation and
learning. And one more step in the process past serotonin
is the production of melatonin, primarily responsible for
maintaining sleep rhythms.
So it should not be a surprise that many women,
approximately six to eight months after beginning oral
contraceptives (a wide range should be expected due to
variances in metabolism and diet), may start to feel mildly
depressed and have difficulty sleeping.
If this sounds familiar, then it may be a good idea to try an
increased intake of B vitamins. The best source is through
diet: green leafy vegetables, legumes, nuts and seeds, and
healthy proteins are a good place to start. Alternately, a
high-quality B-complex vitamin to supplement the diet is
also helpful. If you have further questions regarding drugnutrient depletion, Medmetrics Pharmacy is here to be your
neighborhood resource for all things pharmacy and nutrition.

Shining Light this Holiday Season

on Sharing Down Syndrome Arizona

with Blacker Orthodontics and Kneaders - Chandler

By Jen Petruzzella | Photos by Aimee Mallory

Gina Johnson is uniquely gifted in her

role as Board Member and Founder of
Sharing Down Syndrome Arizona, an
organization that is a life changer for
families who have babies diagnosed
with the congenital anomaly. She understands firsthand the overwhelming
grief and fear that follow the diagnosis and accompanying complications.
Although support was rare and thin
back in the 80s when her son David
was born, Gina remembers those small
moments when someone loved and listened to her. Today, she is most fulfilled
when she is serving others, offering
information and acceptance together
with the 5,500 Arizona families who are
part of the Sharing Down Syndrome
community, a non-profit that she built
one baby at a time.
40 Ocotillo Living November 2016

Gina is an angel who flies into parents lives when they have been hit with
the loss of their expectations of a perfect child. She provides books, CDs,
gifts, and visits for as long or short as needed. Gina states, "If someone is
in distress, don't let go until they release first."
Like her "six severely normal children," Ginas son David has been a
tremendous blessing. He, and the organization he inspired, put things in
perspective, helping those involved to learn to live in the moment and soak
in life. Dr. Blacker and his family were blessed with a visit from Gina three
years ago when their son Luke was born. The second youngest of seven,
Lukes diagnosis came at birth. Gina was the one-woman support system
who swooped in and held their hand through the process, letting them know
the facts about their baby and providing a community of acceptance.
After the care and compassion that the family experienced, Blacker
Orthodontics has since been involved in the annual Sharing Down
Syndrome Arizona Breakfast with Santa. The team has been providing
toys for the 200-300 families who gather to celebrate the season with a DJ
dance party each year. Dr. Blackers patients quickly became interested
in gifting for the special event and now they invite the community to
participate as well.
November 2016 Ocotillo Living

41

Now through December 1st, Blacker Orthodontics is collecting new, unwrapped toys to distribute at the party. Gifts can be
dropped off during office hours at the orthodontics practice, or
donated at Ocotillos own breakfast pre-party at Kneaders.
On Saturday, November 19th, Dr. Blacker will buy bottomless
French toast for the first 100 guests to donate a new toy for the
kids. Come to Kneaders in Chandler between 8 and 10 am to join
the neighbors with chunky cinnamon bread, fresh cream, strawberries, and caramel syrup. Kellen Sears, owner of Kneaders Chandler, is donating 20% of all other breakfast sales that day to
Sharing Down Syndrome Arizona.
An additional check will be presented at the Breakfast with Santa
event as Dr. Blacker is donating 100% of the proceeds for invisible
retainers for the month of November. Patients and non-patients
alike can have custom Invisalign-style retainers made in-house
for $99 per arch this month. Blacker Orthodontics has doubled
the support of this initiative each year, and hopes to write a big
check again for 2016. Call 480-917-7977 to schedule your fitting

comfortable. And while a plaid shirt or dress is the ultimate fall
statement, you can always mix it up and go for a cute plaid bag or
scarf instead.
Scarves have become wildly popular in recent years and can be
worn with anything from a white t-shirt to a black dress. With
an array of colors and patterns, a scarf can turn any outfit into a
stylish one.
Last but not least, and my favorite fall accessory, BOOTS! An
ever-popular staple, boots can be worn with almost anything,
even shorts if its warm enough. You may want to opt for ankle
length or booties to avoid getting too toasty.
Remember, just because the temperatures are warmer doesnt
mean we have to miss out on the fun fall trends. With a little creativity and some pieces you already have in your closet, you can
have a fabulous fall wardrobe.

Need a Little Backyard Heat?:

$1,700, so there is a substantial difference in cost. A fire pit has 360-degree

seating whereas most fireplaces have
180-degree seating. A fire pit throws
off more heat most of the time because
you are able to sit closer to it and of
course can accommodate more people
around it. I do love the look of a welldesigned fireplace. It really can give
the backyard or front courtyard a very
cozy feel.

opening which can stain and affect

the beauty of the structure over time.
The fire pits I build usually finish off
at about 15 inches above the patio for
a reason. The seat of the chairs you
are using are usually 18 20 inches off
the patio. When sitting around the fire
pit, what is the natural tendency? To
put your feet up on it of course. That
is why I like a finished height of 15
inchesit acts like a natural ottoman.

There are really three components to

a fireplace. The main kiva where the
fire is burning, the wing walls on both
sides, and the seat walls with hearth
in front. I usually build them with all
three components, but you can eliminate the wing walls and/or seat walls
based on the overall design of the area.
This will cut down on the construction costs for sure. You also have to
be careful of how the upper level of
the fireplace with flue is constructed
so you get the proper draft, otherwise
smoke often billows out of the front

As you can see from some of the pictures, there are numerous material options, styles, and colors. These beautiful
structures are built by the most amazing artisans on my staff. The attention
to detail and quality of construction
makes any backyard just that much better and, of course, with a well thought
out landscape plan built by a professional contractor/designer, always adds
some nice equity upon completion.

Fireplaces & Fire PitsThe Perfect Solution

Column and photos by Curt Havens

With cold evenings approaching and temps in the 40s and 50s,
being in the backyard isnt quite the same without the warmth
of a nice fireplace or fire pit. Yesa good patio heater never
hurts, but it doesnt add the equity to your home like a welldesigned fireplace or fire pit. Lets explore your options and the
cost associated with both so you can determine the best fit for
your home and lifestyle.
The three most common fuel sources are wood, natural gas, and
propane. Many living in Ocotillo dont have natural gas, so we are
limited to wood or propane. I have a wood burning fire pit in my
backyard because I dont have the luxury of natural gas and Im not a
big proponent of propane for a few reasons that I will explain later.
I buy my wood from Paul Bunyan Firewood in Guadalupe and have
some delivered a couple of times each winter. Half cords usually
run just under $300 delivered and stacked, which I think is reasonable. They have many different kinds of wood to choose fromlots
of choices there. Natural gas is my first choice for any fireplace or
fire pit and in my opinion is the cleanest, most abundant fuel source
in America. As I mentioned, Im not a big fan of propane. First, the
set-up is fairly expensive because you really cant use a small fivegallon tank or youll be running to fill it numerous times a month. A

48 Ocotillo Living November 2016

twin 100 lb. tank that holds approximately 23 gallons per tank, or 46
gallons for the pair, will cost over a thousand dollars for the setup,
then you, of course, have to add in the distance between tank storage
and where your fireplace/fire pit is located to run your underground
piping. You also need a key valve to turn it on and a burner (stainless
preferred) in your fire pit, or log set in your fireplace. The cost of
propane is about $3/gallon and in a fireplace or fire pit, doesnt burn
as clean as natural gas and a black soot usually emanate from them.
Because most fireplaces and pits are burning at least 100,000 BTUs
(British Thermal Units), they are expensive to operate, and with the
other items mentioned above, they are my least favorite option. The
cost of running natural gas from the meter is still an expense, but the
overall operating cost is cheaper than propane as well as very clean
burning. One other pointa wood fireplace or pit gives off much
more heat than either natural gas or propane. Dont light them with
too much of a breeze in the air unless you dont mind smelling a little
campy before you go to bed.
There are big cost differences between a fireplace or fire pit. A
fireplace (wood ready), will run between $4,500 - $8,000 depending on how big you make it and the materials you use to build it. On
the other hand, a fire pit starts at about $1,000 and goes as high as

the Year of the Monkey:

Ginger Monkey's New American Bar & Grill

Photos and column by Christian Chandler

Hello Ocotillo Friends!

We finally made it to the time of year; the prime
reason we live in this state, PATIO WEATHER! Our
local establishments know how much we Phoenicians love hanging outside with friends and family,
including those of the canine variety. I have some
great news for those of us in the Ocotillo area as we
are home to the first Ginger Monkey restaurant, located in the Fulton Ranch Towne Center on Ocotillo
Road and Arizona Avenue. Not only did it fill the
void left from the exodus of Whiskey Rose, but they
also added a dog-friendly patio that's the perfect
space for Fido to hang with his friends.
Ginger Monkey is the brainchild of longtime friends
Jackson Armstrong (Ginger- hence the red hair),
and Doug Collins (Monkey- Dougs Spirit Animal).
Jackson, from Denver, has a background in hotel
restaurant and bar management, while Doug, from

50 Ocotillo Living November 2016

San Diego, has been an owner/operator of several bars throughout his career.
Theyd been talking about opening a place for years, but the timing never
worked. Two years ago, the stars aligned and they started to pursue this endeavor. When San Diego proved to be too costly, they turned to Arizona, where
they both had lived previously. After a diligent search for a location, they
decided Chandler was the perfect place to cater to the local community.
Ginger Monkeys menu, described as New American Cuisine, consists of dishes
that are sure to satisfy everyones appetite, including those who desire vegetarian or gluten free options. They even have dishes for your pooch. Their bar
offerings consist of thirty beers on tap (most of them craft) and bottles, wine,
and spirits, with drinks handcrafted by their talented mixologist.
While they do have an ample sized bar, they also want their restaurant to be
warm and welcoming to families and will plan several family-centric events to
complement their other activities such as weekend brunch, sports watching
parties, and live music. The Ginger Monkey is a welcome addition to our community and I look forward to their success.
Cheers!

Stephen Biles opened his first dog care facility, Gilbert Dogs 24/7,
in 2009. As a big dog lover with six canines of his own, five from
shelters or strays, Biles opted to create a cage-free paradise for
his pack and more. Demand for quality care for fur children led
to our own Chandler Dogs 24/7 in 2009, followed by his newest
location in Tempe. Each facility offers separate areas for small
and large dogs. Backyard space is available as well, with dogs partaking in pool parties during the warmer months.
To align with the busy pace of his customers, Biles started the
24/7 drop-off pick-up model. The sites are staffed twenty-four
hours a day, making boarding, day care, or night care suitable for
anyone regardless of shift work or a challenging travel schedule.
The staff has even had quite a few clients call for drop off in the
middle of the night: We are on our way to the hospital. The baby
is on the way!
All breeds are welcome, however, there are requirements to
become a canine client. Dogs undergo temperament testing, they
must be spayed or neutered, and vaccinations have to be current.
We have a relationship with each and every dog, and our staff is
like family, comments staff member Nikkieta Yahne.

Turbo-Charge It!
A turbocharger is an add-on part that uses recycled exhaust
gases to increase power. Smaller turbocharged engines can equal
larger non-turbocharged ones in acceleration with better fuel
economy. But be aware that turbocharged engines are only more
fuel efficient when you drive with a light foot. You also should
consider that the turbocharger is another moving part that can
fail and be expensive to replace. Nevertheless, the turbocharged
engine provides a good solution for meeting ever-increasing fuel
economy standards while not disappointing spirited drivers;
and many manufacturers have adopted the downsize-and-turbocharge-it engine strategy.
The Ecotec 1.4L turbocharged engine comes standard on the
latest Chevrolet Cruze, featuring direct injection resulting in
an EPA -estimated 42 mpg on the highway with available sixspeed transmission. An aluminum cylinder block and head helps
reduce the Cruzes overall mass to enhance performance and
efficiency. It also features an integrated aluminum cylinder head/
exhaust manifold, which further reduces weight an attribute
that contributes to increased vehicle efficiency and a more favorable front-to-rear weight balance for a more responsive driving
experience. The all-new 2016 Cruze is noted for offering the ride
of a bigger sedan in a compact sedan package.
The 2016 Volkswagen Passat also comes standard with a
turbocharged engine. Its 1.8L four-cylinder engine and six-speed
automatic will do 38 mpg on the highway. The Passat was also
given an overall design refresh for 2016. This mid-size sedan is
known for having a roomy cabin, refined and quiet ride, as well as
top safety scores.

Chevrolet Cruze

Volkswagen Passat

If youre looking at small crossover SUVs, the all-new Hyundai

Tucson delivers style, value and versatility. Hyundais 1.6-liter turbocharged engine comes with all but the base model. Its
transmission is a seven-speed dual-clutch automated manual that
works just like a regular automatic for a peppy and smooth ride.
Three inches longer and 1.1 inches wider than the previous model, the new Tucson delivers an adult-friendly backseat, enhanced
cargo capacity, and cutting-edge safety and technology features.
Our Limited FWD test model was rated at 30 mpg highway.

forthright, love-of-living lady, had a lot to say and a certain way
of saying it. It was like she had already written her best-selling
self-help book describing ways to get through life in order to become a self-assured senior woman. So, here is my take on a life
well-lived, well-loved, and well-done. Lylla, stop me if Im wrong,
but I heard you say:
1. When life gives you lemons, throw them outbuy limes!
(Tequila makes everything easier to swallow)
2. Never go to sleep madyou can get even in the morning.
(Funny how that works!)
3. Tomorrow will be betterit better be! (Especially when
youre a very young, single parent with no help from anyone
except the good Lord and common sense. And then when
that baby grows up, she lives next door to younow that says
it all about good parenting!)
4. Strong women are wonderfulsmart and strong, even better!
(Whatever doesnt kill you, like mean ex-husbands, makes
you stronger and more determined.)

5. And speaking of mean, live your life like you

mean it.
6. Closing one door isnt a bad thingits opening
the next thats the challenge! (BUTthats what
those doors are for, so go ahead, open another
one!)
7. Never get discouragedlife is better than it
looks.
8. Never say never. Just say OK!
9. Kids are a blessing. Grandkids and greatgrandkids are gifts from heaven.
10. Husbands who work, dance and laugh are the
only kind to have. Mine does all three. (My
Ken!)
11. Good women friends? Find some. Theyre
the best. (I have many, but my daughter is my
favorite!)
12. Retirement? Never!

History of Wine II:

Continued from the October Issue

Next up, the Romans planted vines everywhere
they expanded their empire. Most European
wine regions date their beginning to this period.
During this time, people drank a lot of wine; in
urban areas, it was safer than water.
In the middle ages, the church took over. Think about it, when
most people are just trying to survive, the monks had the time,
money, and resources to exchange ideas, experiment, and tinker
with new wine technologies. Beholden to no government, they
acted more like a modern-day multinational corporation.
Modern winemaking is said to have developed around the mid
17th century. With the advent of the glass bottle and the cork
closure, a wine trade could develop. This is important because
the mid to upper classes were not just stuck with the local wine.
So names like Bordeaux, Burgundy or Champagne could be recognized and exported. With all that money and fame, producers
could reinvest in their vineyards and wineriesquality improves,
and so on, and so on, you get the picture.

good value at around $30 / bottle.
Failla 2014 Keefer Ranch Pinot Noir - Russian River Valley. A
little more delicate style Pinot Noir, not as aggressive. The 2014
crop was smaller than 2013 which is an early indicator of quality.
Balanced forward fruit of red raspberry and Asian spices, at or
around $40 / bottle.
Failla 2014 Savoy Pinot Noir Anderson Valley. This is my
favorite of all three. Vibrant and snappy. This exciting Pinot has
nuances of coffee, plum, and red raspberry. It definitely has structure, yet mellowed with time in the glass. Around $50 / bottle.

Using Humor to Heal

If you're looking for a fun night out and want to make a difference in our community, the CCFA (Crohns and Colitis Foundation) invites you out for an evening of comedy at Rick Bronsons House of Comedy in Phoenix on November
10th at 6:00 p.m.
Though most of us have heard of Crohns disease and Ulcerative Colitis (UC),
it's not as well known as Heart Disease or Cancer but can be just as debilitating.
Crohns and UC are commonly referred to as Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
and are painful, medically incurable diseases that attack the digestive system.
The exact cause of IBD is still unknown and while studies show that genes, environmental factors and problems with the immune system may be causes, anyone can be diagnosed. Today some 1.6 million Americans suffer from Crohns or
UC and most people develop the disease between the ages 17 and 35.
Unfortunately for Coop Groppenbacher of Ocotillo, he was diagnosed at just 10
years old. Coops mother, Shannon, noticed changes in her son months before
he was diagnosed. He lost interest in his usual activities, had severe stomach
and body aches and lost his appetite. Shannon was particularly alarmed when

60 Ocotillo Living November 2016

Jonathan Negretti, event honoree

Coop appeared to stop growing. Mom, am I shrinking? Coop asked Shannon, my clothes are getting
bigger on me. Kids that had been the same height
as Coop the year before, were now several inches
taller. After many tests and misdiagnoses, he was
eventually diagnosed with severe Crohns disease.
Today, Coop is a thriving 12-year-old who manages
his disease with Infusion Therapy. This involves an
injection of medication meant to decrease inflammation, every 8 weeks. Unless there is a cure, Coop
will continue treatment for the rest of his life.
More IBD patients will be sharing their inspirational stories at the event and two distinguished
members of our community will be honored. Jonathan Negretti, who lived with UC for fifteen years,
and his surgeon Dr.David Etzioni. Jonathan was
diagnosed with UC at age 21 and after years of hiding his illness from friends and family, he opted for

Heather Christiansen and Megan Livengood

surgery. Though the UC has been eradicated from

his body, Jonathan now lives with a stoma.
Dr. Etzioni, Jonathans surgeon and the medical
honoree, is the Chair of the Division of Colon and
Rectal Surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona.
Together with his family, Jonathan and Dr. Etzioni
are committed to bringing awareness to a disease
that secretly affects so many.
In addition to the compelling stories, guests will enjoy inspired cuisine, cocktails, auctions and more.
With your help, the CCFA can continue to provide
support to families and patients, host educational
programs and provide other services to those suffering with IBD. If youd like to be a part of this festive evening you can visit www.ccfa.org/chapters/
southwest to purchase tickets.
