November 2016 Ocotillo Living
publishers note
Dear
Friends,
Welcome to the November issue of your neighborhood newsletter. In celebration of fall, we have a true autumn admirer's home
as our monthly residential feature. Please be sure to check out
Jane Gilmer's lovely residence on pages 12-13. Her story is sure
to warm your heart.
Also specific to the season, we have Tiffany Rooney's pumpkin
bar recipe on page 45. This may be the perfectly portable answer
to pie...if there are any leftovers. Fall fashions are still a thing,
even if we live in Arizona. See Megan Gajeski's ideas to convert
your summer pieces to fall on page 46.
Holidays mean family and family, for many of us, includes our dogs.
This is certainly the case for Stephen Biles and his business, Chandler Dogs 24/7. This avid dog lover's story about building better
boarding can be found on pages 52-53. Ginger Monkey is open for
business, complete with a dog-friendly patio and menu. Tap into this
new grill and pub on pages 50-51. Of course, we have our pet of the
month feature as well. Meet Chester and Chief on page 20.
If you are considering the addition of a pet this holiday season,
we encourage you to consider adoption. I truly believe that my
dog knows that she was rescued and is thankful every day. It is
a joy to wake up to my perfect mutt, Dani, bursting with love and
grateful to be alive. She truly embodies "it's all good" whether
she's choosing to lay in a pile of hot rocks, playing dolls with my
daughter, or when she comes home to check that her food bowl is
still in place. Rescue dogs epitomize loyalty and thanksgiving.
Best to you and your family this holiday season and always,
Jen Petruzzella

The Gilmers
Jane Gilmer
By Wendy Bates
Images by Chrissy Ray Photography
Butch and Jane Gilmer bought their single story home in Ocotillo twenty years ago. I had a
chance to sit down with Jane this month and talk with her about her personal style and what
makes her home special.
Butch and Jane met when they were only 13 and 14, growing up in Tennessee. After high
school, Butch joined the military and went to college. Jane went to college and became a
teacher. They married in their mid-twenties and with Butchs career, were able to travel all
over the southeastern U.S., including Georgia, North Carolina and Alabama. After many
years and three wonderful kids, the couple was transferred to the Phoenix area. Jane looked
in Scottsdale and Ahwatukee but when she saw their home in Ocotillo, she instantly knew it
was the one.
One key piece in the Gilmers home is the baby grand piano that sits stately in the formal
living room. Adorning the top are many mementos, including a photo of Jane being crowned
Ms. Senior Arizona in 2009.
Mortgage Tip
of the Month
High FICO Scores Saves You Thousands!
Jane has many creative hobbies and collections, including needlepoint, crafting cakes and painting china. Her painted plates, bowls
and floral boxes adorn her oversized countertop in the kitchen and
are displayed throughout her beautifully traditional home.
The same year that Jane won the pageant, she lost her beloved husband, Butch. She continued her duties as Ms. Arizona, leaving her with a year of great happiness and sadness. Today,
Jane has many photos of Butch, her children, family and friends throughout her home.
PS: In 2010, Jane crowned her very good friend Dr. Madelaine
Paschal the new Ms. Senior Arizona. Maddy and her husband,
Gordon, are on the front cover of this issue.

ing. Why not take the opportunity to make yours more spacious,
appealing, functional and durable?
Check out the range of options at your fingertips when it comes
to countertop surfaces regarding style, functionality, care and
keeping:
Granites got it going on: beauty and brawn. Its no wonder
many families fall in love with granite. This natural stone scores
points for resiliency and easy care. Each slab is unique and
available in a myriad of colors. Best granites scratch resistant
surface means you can let the kids play Chef and cut, splice and
dice without worry.
Marble is marvelous, but high maintenance. If there is
anything as understated and luxurious as white marble, we want
to know about it. You can dress marble up for a rich look or keep
it clean and contemporary or country chic. Many are choosing
the popular White Carrera marble, a more affordable price point
than others. However, its a more porous stone, leaving it a bit
more vulnerable to scratches and stains. We recommend this for
those who love a beautiful look but whose kitchens arent quite as
busy as a Chopped chefs.
Quartzite is the quite the compromise. For those who want
it all the durability of granite and the sleek look of marble
quartzite offers the perfect middle ground. White Macaubas is
an option that offers up the lighter coloring and gray patterning
marble is known for, but stands up a bit more to wear-and-tear.
Sealing is still a great idea. A little effort now goes a long way in
the future!
Whatever your choices, upgrading your countertops in the
kitchen adds aesthetic and financial value to your home. If guests
are going to end up in the kitchen anyway, its the best case for
more countertop space!

my
Avocado
Where to start
Its been said that when you love someone, you
embrace their pastand their future. But when you
know, up front, that the future may be less than
youd hope for and much less than you have learned
to expect, well then, you just sit back and enjoy the
ridewhats left of it. And thats how it is when
you fall in love as a senior citizen with another
senior. Its not easy learning to blend, mix, cultivate, water, grow and harvestand Im not talking
about gardens. Im talking relationships that begin
when youre old and continue through older, until
youre more old than anything else and crotchety,
and bent, and achy, and altogether tired. Is it even
possible? Yes! Is it even fair? Well, not quite. Will
you even believe it when it happens? Almost. Can
you even muster the energy to fall in love againfor
the last time in your life? Absolutely!
You see, Im in the produce aisle one day, looking
for avocados. There are varieties of these oddshaped, smooth-tasting fruits in varying degrees
of color and texture. Im lost in the moment. Is
one variety better than another? Is the softer
one better than the firmer one? Is the roughskinned one as delectable as the smooth-skinned
one? I pick up one and then the other and then
my mind begins to wander. Are we all a little
like avocados? Im chuckling to myself when
I notice a nice-looking older guy checking out
the cantaloupes. Is he thinking the same thing I
am? One is more round, more firm, less bumpy,
and more fragrant than the others? Oh, noIve
totally lost it! I leave without an avocado or
anything else. "Im officially old," I mutter.
Then, a week later, I see the same guy looking at
condos, and hes right in front of me! I may look
like an avocado, I think, but I feel like a ripe tomato!
Im flushed with color, a little warm, and all mushy
inside...for the first time in years! And Im still
comparing myself to fruit! Oh Lord, help me! I
stammer my name as I put my hand out for his. He
takes it! Now, Im really done! He smiles! I cant
really remember what I did except that I remember
thinking that this salad just might be greattossed,
lost or wilted and I laugh out loud. And this is how
Gordon and I met.
It was almost a year later after many movies and
salads, that Gordon decides to tell me that he is a
17
for the first time in my life and won! After the initial shock wore off, I went on to be the first runnerup in the Ms. Senior America pageant but like I was
told by one of my kids, if you arent first, youre
last! So much for beauty contests. I would go on
to host my own live TV segment called Seniors on
the Move for six more years, write four books, a
monthly column for the best community magazine
in America (which you are presently reading), and
begin to sing professionally. Gordon would become
my lighting guy and roadie, and together we would
start down the last phase of our livestogether,
enjoying it all.
What an adventure these past twelve years have
been! My produce shopping has been relinquished
to Gordon who enjoys picking everything outbut
always says he got the best tomato in the bunch. I
laughbecause you see, we have discovered that
all fruit is good, even the older varieties. And no
matter what the covering looks like or feels like,
its whats inside that counts. And my avocado is
just rightgood skin, soft on the inside with a solid
core.thats my Gordon. And Im his Maddy. I like
when he calls me that. We blend.

Making their move from a barn to posh living in Chandler, Chief and

Brangers, where they are cherished as fundamental members of the
family. Both Labrador retrievers are loyal, playful, and loving to all.
Hayden and Hope, the teenagers of the family, love to play with the
pups, meanwhile mom and dad love to snuggle with their dogs.

work. This removes a common complaint of parents that schools only offer
materials which assure mastery at the lowest common denominator.
Why is this approach not utilized universally?
So, why doesn't every school utilize skills grouping to obtain positive outcomes? Usually for very practical reasons: Skills grouping takes a large
specially trained teaching team. It also means that different curriculum and
textbooks must be purchased and employed by each teacher within the classroom. Additionally, use of skills grouping requires that a battery of assessment
testing tools be utilized to determine individual student achievement levels. All
of these considerations add up to budgetary constraints and most frequently
To quote noted Johns Hopkins education researchers, James and Chen-Lin Kulik, "Without acceleration achieved by means of Grouping for all academic abilities, achievement levels are sure to fall
dramatically." Is this what has happened in our
schools across the U.S.? The Kuliks also assert:
"No one can be certain that there would be a way to
repair the long-term harm done to children."
About New Vistas Center for Education:
New Vistas Center for Education, named a Top Ten School by Johns
Hopkins University CTY, and Top Science and Engineering School in
Arizona by Intel, Helios, et al. founded in 1979, is an accelerated, private
pre-school through sixth grade located at: 670 North Arizona Avenue,
Suite 35, Chandler, AZ 85225. Currently, New Vistas is celebrating their
37th anniversary.
1. Speed of Accomplishment. Students can be more effectively instructed because they accomplish more and move more
quickly - an important consideration when the goal is mastery of
subject matter. Grouping accelerates the time it takes to achieve
mastery and allows students the opportunity to excel on nationally normed tests. Some students even go from average to highly
advanced ranges on testing.
2. Ceiling to learning is removed. What does this mean?
We have often seen high-achieving students in elementary grades
that are ready to learn statistics/probability, geometry, and
pre-algebra long before those topics are introduced in the typical classroom. If the advanced material is presented, the gifted
students will learn it.
3. Students remain challenged. When the ceiling to
learning is removed students excel at higher and higher levels,
thus, eliminating boredom and rewarding achievement and hard

Unfortunately, I vividly remember this day all too well, as I am sure you do too. We
were living in Kansas and I was pregnant with my oldest daughter, making breakfast. The Today Show was on in the background when Katie Couric announced the
horrific attacks on the United States of America. I was stunned with emotion and
sadness. For myself and others, 9/11 was a pivotal moment, striking fear and pain
in hearts worldwide. On this terrible day in 2001, four airliners were hijacked by
Al Qaeda militants with the intention of mass destruction on domestic soil including the World Trade Center's Twin Towers, Washington D.C., and Pennsylvania.
The death toll reached over 3,000, including 400 police officers and firefighters.
One local organization called the 100 Club of Arizona recently sought to honor
those who were killed while providing aid to those still in need after the 9/11
attacks. The 100 Club issued a challenge to all police, fire, first responders, and
supporters to climb 110 floors, simulating approximately 2,071 steps, which was
the number of steps in the Twin Towers. The Tower Climb Challenge was held on
September 9th of this year simultaneously at NAU, U of A, and ASU, with proceeds
being split between the 100 Club of Arizona and a locally represented non-profit focusing on the military. Combined, there were almost 2,000 participants, with each
receiving a dri-fit shirt and a commemorative coin. The event was memorable and
emotional for all who walked the steps or worked to create the challenge. Take a
look at the video recap at www.911TowerChallenge.org. I promise youll be moved.
For those of you less familiar with the 100 Club of Arizona, it's a non-profit organization that works to provide support to families of first responders killed in
the line of duty or officers or firefighters who are severely injured. They take
great pride in helping individuals with the most difficult times in their lives.
Benefits vary based on the need. The 100 Club can only give away what they

Gina is an angel who flies into parents lives when they have been hit with
the loss of their expectations of a perfect child. She provides books, CDs,
gifts, and visits for as long or short as needed. Gina states, "If someone is
in distress, don't let go until they release first."
Like her "six severely normal children," Ginas son David has been a
tremendous blessing. He, and the organization he inspired, put things in
perspective, helping those involved to learn to live in the moment and soak
in life. Dr. Blacker and his family were blessed with a visit from Gina three
years ago when their son Luke was born. The second youngest of seven,
Lukes diagnosis came at birth. Gina was the one-woman support system
who swooped in and held their hand through the process, letting them know
the facts about their baby and providing a community of acceptance.
After the care and compassion that the family experienced, Blacker
Orthodontics has since been involved in the annual Sharing Down
Syndrome Arizona Breakfast with Santa. The team has been providing
toys for the 200-300 families who gather to celebrate the season with a DJ
dance party each year. Dr. Blackers patients quickly became interested
in gifting for the special event and now they invite the community to
participate as well.

Now through December 1st, Blacker Orthodontics is collecting new, unwrapped toys to distribute at the party. Gifts can be
dropped off during office hours at the orthodontics practice, or
donated at Ocotillos own breakfast pre-party at Kneaders.
On Saturday, November 19th, Dr. Blacker will buy bottomless
French toast for the first 100 guests to donate a new toy for the
kids. Come to Kneaders in Chandler between 8 and 10 am to join
the neighbors with chunky cinnamon bread, fresh cream, strawberries, and caramel syrup. Kellen Sears, owner of Kneaders Chandler, is donating 20% of all other breakfast sales that day to
Sharing Down Syndrome Arizona.
An additional check will be presented at the Breakfast with Santa
event as Dr. Blacker is donating 100% of the proceeds for invisible
retainers for the month of November. Patients and non-patients
alike can have custom Invisalign-style retainers made in-house
for $99 per arch this month. Blacker Orthodontics has doubled
the support of this initiative each year, and hopes to write a big
check again for 2016. Call 480-917-7977 to schedule your fitting

Leather jackets may scream fall, but if you dont want to risk
overheating then try a classic denim jacket. Denim is always
in style no matter what time of the year and pairing it with the
must-have print of the season, plaid, will keep you on trend and
comfortable. And while a plaid shirt or dress is the ultimate fall
statement, you can always mix it up and go for a cute plaid bag or
scarf instead.
Scarves have become wildly popular in recent years and can be
worn with anything from a white t-shirt to a black dress. With
an array of colors and patterns, a scarf can turn any outfit into a
stylish one.
Last but not least, and my favorite fall accessory, BOOTS! An
ever-popular staple, boots can be worn with almost anything,
even shorts if its warm enough. You may want to opt for ankle
length or booties to avoid getting too toasty.
Remember, just because the temperatures are warmer doesnt
mean we have to miss out on the fun fall trends. With a little creativity and some pieces you already have in your closet, you can
have a fabulous fall wardrobe.

As you can see from some of the pictures, there are numerous material options, styles, and colors. These beautiful
structures are built by the most amazing artisans on my staff. The attention
to detail and quality of construction
makes any backyard just that much better and, of course, with a well thought
out landscape plan built by a professional contractor/designer, always adds
some nice equity upon completion.
To see a lot more choices, designs, and options, please
visit www.outsidelivingconcepts.com
WWW.OUTSIDELIVINGCONCEPTS.COM
With cold evenings approaching and temps in the 40s and 50s,
being in the backyard isnt quite the same without the warmth
of a nice fireplace or fire pit. Yesa good patio heater never
hurts, but it doesnt add the equity to your home like a welldesigned fireplace or fire pit. Lets explore your options and the
cost associated with both so you can determine the best fit for
your home and lifestyle.
The three most common fuel sources are wood, natural gas, and
propane. Many living in Ocotillo dont have natural gas, so we are
limited to wood or propane. I have a wood burning fire pit in my
backyard because I dont have the luxury of natural gas and Im not a
big proponent of propane for a few reasons that I will explain later.
I buy my wood from Paul Bunyan Firewood in Guadalupe and have
some delivered a couple of times each winter. Half cords usually
run just under $300 delivered and stacked, which I think is reasonable. They have many different kinds of wood to choose fromlots
of choices there. Natural gas is my first choice for any fireplace or
fire pit and in my opinion is the cleanest, most abundant fuel source
in America. As I mentioned, Im not a big fan of propane. First, the
set-up is fairly expensive because you really cant use a small fivegallon tank or youll be running to fill it numerous times a month. A
twin 100 lb. tank that holds approximately 23 gallons per tank, or 46
gallons for the pair, will cost over a thousand dollars for the setup,
then you, of course, have to add in the distance between tank storage
and where your fireplace/fire pit is located to run your underground
piping. You also need a key valve to turn it on and a burner (stainless
preferred) in your fire pit, or log set in your fireplace. The cost of
propane is about $3/gallon and in a fireplace or fire pit, doesnt burn
as clean as natural gas and a black soot usually emanate from them.
Because most fireplaces and pits are burning at least 100,000 BTUs
(British Thermal Units), they are expensive to operate, and with the
other items mentioned above, they are my least favorite option. The
cost of running natural gas from the meter is still an expense, but the
overall operating cost is cheaper than propane as well as very clean
burning. One other pointa wood fireplace or pit gives off much
more heat than either natural gas or propane. Dont light them with
too much of a breeze in the air unless you dont mind smelling a little
campy before you go to bed.
There are big cost differences between a fireplace or fire pit. A
fireplace (wood ready), will run between $4,500 - $8,000 depending on how big you make it and the materials you use to build it. On
the other hand, a fire pit starts at about $1,000 and goes as high as

San Diego, has been an owner/operator of several bars throughout his career.
Theyd been talking about opening a place for years, but the timing never
worked. Two years ago, the stars aligned and they started to pursue this endeavor. When San Diego proved to be too costly, they turned to Arizona, where
they both had lived previously. After a diligent search for a location, they
decided Chandler was the perfect place to cater to the local community.
Ginger Monkeys menu, described as New American Cuisine, consists of dishes
that are sure to satisfy everyones appetite, including those who desire vegetarian or gluten free options. They even have dishes for your pooch. Their bar
offerings consist of thirty beers on tap (most of them craft) and bottles, wine,
and spirits, with drinks handcrafted by their talented mixologist.
While they do have an ample sized bar, they also want their restaurant to be
warm and welcoming to families and will plan several family-centric events to
complement their other activities such as weekend brunch, sports watching
parties, and live music. The Ginger Monkey is a welcome addition to our community and I look forward to their success.
Cheers!

and large dogs. Backyard space is available as well, with dogs partaking in pool parties during the warmer months.
To align with the busy pace of his customers, Biles started the
24/7 drop-off pick-up model. The sites are staffed twenty-four
hours a day, making boarding, day care, or night care suitable for
anyone regardless of shift work or a challenging travel schedule.
The staff has even had quite a few clients call for drop off in the
middle of the night: We are on our way to the hospital. The baby
is on the way!
All breeds are welcome, however, there are requirements to
become a canine client. Dogs undergo temperament testing, they
must be spayed or neutered, and vaccinations have to be current.
We have a relationship with each and every dog, and our staff is
like family, comments staff member Nikkieta Yahne.

Turbo-Charge It!
A turbocharger is an add-on part that uses recycled exhaust
gases to increase power. Smaller turbocharged engines can equal
larger non-turbocharged ones in acceleration with better fuel
economy. But be aware that turbocharged engines are only more
fuel efficient when you drive with a light foot. You also should
consider that the turbocharger is another moving part that can
fail and be expensive to replace. Nevertheless, the turbocharged
engine provides a good solution for meeting ever-increasing fuel
economy standards while not disappointing spirited drivers;
and many manufacturers have adopted the downsize-and-turbocharge-it engine strategy.
The Ecotec 1.4L turbocharged engine comes standard on the
latest Chevrolet Cruze, featuring direct injection resulting in
an EPA -estimated 42 mpg on the highway with available sixspeed transmission. An aluminum cylinder block and head helps
reduce the Cruzes overall mass to enhance performance and
efficiency. It also features an integrated aluminum cylinder head/
exhaust manifold, which further reduces weight an attribute
that contributes to increased vehicle efficiency and a more favorable front-to-rear weight balance for a more responsive driving
experience. The all-new 2016 Cruze is noted for offering the ride
of a bigger sedan in a compact sedan package.
The 2016 Volkswagen Passat also comes standard with a
turbocharged engine. Its 1.8L four-cylinder engine and six-speed
automatic will do 38 mpg on the highway. The Passat was also
given an overall design refresh for 2016. This mid-size sedan is
known for having a roomy cabin, refined and quiet ride, as well as
top safety scores.

If you're looking for a fun night out and want to make a difference in our community, the CCFA (Crohns and Colitis Foundation) invites you out for an evening of comedy at Rick Bronsons House of Comedy in Phoenix on November
10th at 6:00 p.m.
Though most of us have heard of Crohns disease and Ulcerative Colitis (UC),
it's not as well known as Heart Disease or Cancer but can be just as debilitating.
Crohns and UC are commonly referred to as Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
and are painful, medically incurable diseases that attack the digestive system.
The exact cause of IBD is still unknown and while studies show that genes, environmental factors and problems with the immune system may be causes, anyone can be diagnosed. Today some 1.6 million Americans suffer from Crohns or
UC and most people develop the disease between the ages 17 and 35.
Unfortunately for Coop Groppenbacher of Ocotillo, he was diagnosed at just 10
years old. Coops mother, Shannon, noticed changes in her son months before
he was diagnosed. He lost interest in his usual activities, had severe stomach
and body aches and lost his appetite. Shannon was particularly alarmed when
Coop appeared to stop growing. Mom, am I shrinking? Coop asked Shannon, my clothes are getting
bigger on me. Kids that had been the same height
as Coop the year before, were now several inches
taller. After many tests and misdiagnoses, he was
eventually diagnosed with severe Crohns disease.
Today, Coop is a thriving 12-year-old who manages
his disease with Infusion Therapy. This involves an
injection of medication meant to decrease inflammation, every 8 weeks. Unless there is a cure, Coop
will continue treatment for the rest of his life.
More IBD patients will be sharing their inspirational stories at the event and two distinguished
members of our community will be honored. Jonathan Negretti, who lived with UC for fifteen years,
and his surgeon Dr.David Etzioni. Jonathan was
diagnosed with UC at age 21 and after years of hiding his illness from friends and family, he opted for
