Question 1: What is notable about W.E.B Dubious and Jane Addams? What did
Addams do (name one thing)? What was DuBois perspective rooted in and what is one
significant thing about his career?
W.E.B DuBois and Jane Addams happened to be both social reformist, and were able to
critique the things that happened to be wrong with the society around them. Jane Addams
was able to organize Hull House, which was a place to educate the poor youth in
Chicago; based on her good works she also won a noble peace prize. Similarly to W.E.B
Dubois he was the co founder of NAACP and happen to also disagree with Marxs
philosophy and approach to communities.
Question 3(b): I dont think busing students from their ghetto to a different school
would do much good. You can take them out of the environment, but you cant take the
environment out of them. If someone grows up in the [inner city], hes not going to be
prone to learn (Concepts to consider: cultural and structural explanations for
inequality, culture of poverty, blaming the victim, tracking, Pygmalion Effect,
legitimating rationales)
The very culture of the tracking system and the Pygmalion effect are evident in this
quote. The tracking system allows people/ specifically researchers or people about of the
larger institution to make an assessment to how you would be achieving based on your
race, where you live and much more. Similarly the Pygmalion effect says that if you have
higher expectations you would be most likely to succeed. Furthermore, they are being
pushed to an environment where they are excluded but also are told things would get
better once they are pushed to a better society only promoting cruel optimism for
communities of color.

Question 7: In what ways was Webers career a conversation with the ghost of Karl
Marx, as the textbooks suggests? Give two examples. (Concepts to consider: class,
proletariat, bourgeoisie, market forces, power, authority, rational, nonrational, means
of production, mode of production, epiphenomenon, capitalism)\
Marx and Weber were very different from each other. Weber disagreed with the ghost of
Marx as he is described of being dead. Marx believed in a communist society, which
property is owned by the public and everyone is entitled to do the same amount of work

and make the same amount of money. On the other hand, Weber believed in bureaucracy
and capitalism based on private ownership and means of production.
