Tutorial of Transmission Line

1. A 30km, 34.5kV, 60 Hz three phase line has a positive sequence series impedance z = 0.19 +
j0.34 /km. The load at the receiving end absorbs 10 MVA at 33 kV. Assumming a short
line, calculate:
a)

( A D 10 p.u, B 11.68560.8 , C 0 S , Vs 35.96kVLL , Vs 33.39kVLL )
2. A 150 km, 230 kV, 60 Hz, three phase line has a positive sequence series impedance z = 0.08
+ j0.48/km and a positive sequence shunt admittance y = j3.33 x 10-6 S/km. At full load,
the line delivers 250 MW at 0.99 p.f. lagging and at 220 kV. Using the nominal circuit,
calculate :
a)
the ABCD parameters
b)
the sending end voltage and current
c)
the percent voltage regulation

( A D 0.9820.175 p.u, B 72.9980.54 , C 4.95 104 90.1 S , Vs 254.4kVLL ,

I s 0.675 2.4 kA, 17.8%)
3. Rework Problem 2 in per unit using 100 MVA (three phase) and 230 kV (line to line) base
values. Calculate :
a)
the per unit ABCD parameters
b)

c)
the percent voltage regulation

( A D 0.9820.175 p.u, B 0.13880.54 p.u, C 0.2690.1 p.u, Vs 1.10618.45 p.u,

I s 2.57 2.4 p.u, 17.8%)
4. A 40 km, 220 kV, 60 Hz three phase overhead transmission line has a per phase resistance of
0.15 /km, a per phase inductance of 1.3263 mH/km and negligible shunt capacitance. Using
the short line model, find the sending end voltage, voltage regulation, sending end power and
transmission line efficiency when the line is supplying a three phase load of;
a)
381 MVA at 0.8 power factor lagging and at 220 kV
b)
381 MVA at 0.8 power factor leading and at 220 kV

j0.78 /km per phase and a shunt admittance of j190 x 10-6 S/km per phase. The line at the
receiving end is connected to 700MW load with unity power factor at 95% of rated voltage.

Find the equivalent ABCD parameters of nominal circuit

Calculate the sending voltage, sending current & sending power
Calculate the percentage of voltage regulation of the line

6. The ABCD constants of a three-phase, 345-kV transmission line are

A = D = 0.98182 + j0.0012447
B = 4.035 + j58.947
C = j0.00061137
The line delivers 400 MVA at 0.8 lagging power factor at 345 kV. Determine the sending
end quantities, voltage regulation, and transmission efficiency.
