Tutorial 5

This document contains 5 questions from a tutorial on solar photovoltaic systems. Question 1 asks about the power required to lift a 100kg mass 4m in 5 seconds. Question 2 asks about the apparent power and total energy used over 365 days for an AC equipment rated at 800W with a 0.85 power factor operating continuously for 6 hours daily. Question 3 asks to define solar time. Question 4 asks about solar altitude angles at different locations given the time and location. Question 5 asks to differentiate between irradiance, irradiation and peak sun hour.

KNU1073 INTRODUCTION TO SOLAR PHOTOVOLTAIC SYSTEM

TUTORIAL 5
1.

A load of mass 100kg is lifted vertically upwards slowly with constant speed, over a displacement of
4m and the complete process occurs in 5s. Neglecting friction and all other losses, determine the
power exerted.

2.

An AC electrical equipment has a power rating of 800W and a power factor (PF) of 0.85. If the
equipment operates continuously for 6 hours daily for 365 days, neglecting all other losses,
calculate:
a) the apparent power
b) the total energy used over 365 days

3.

Define solar time.

4.

Talang Taling Island is located at latitude 25 deg S and longitude 110 deg W of GMT. If it is now
solar noon on the island, determine the:
a) Solar altitude angle when the sun is over the equator
b) Solar altitude angle when the sun is over the Tropic of Cancer
c) Best tilt angle for PV module when the sun is over the Tropic of Capricorn

5.

Differentiate between Irradiance, Irradiation and Peak Sun Hour.
