Course Information
Chemistry is the study of all substances and the changes that they can undergo.
Chemistry is a science of matter and energy. It is a branch of the natural sciences
that deals with the composition of substances, their properties, and their reactions.
This course will require organization, discipline, and practice. Chemistry involves a
great deal of vocabulary, critical thinking, problem solving, and mathematics. Basic
knowledge of algebra is required, but you can also learn the math along the way.
You will not receive a textbook initially. We will reference several different texts
throughout the year. It is imperative that you take good notes, come to class
prepared, and keep EVERYTHING for this class in your binder. Throw nothing away
—you never know when you’ll need it!
Grading Policy
The grading policy for this class is a points-based system. Grades are determined
by total points earned divided by total points possible. Assignments are weighted
as follows:
Assignment Category % of
Grade
Tests/Quizzes 50
Laboratory Activities 25
Homework/Class work 20
Warm-ups/MME questions 5
Students shall be given the number of days absent plus one to make up work
missed during EXCUSED absences for full credit.
If absence occurs on a quiz/test day, students shall make up the quiz/test on the
day they return from an absence, either in class, before or after school, or in
seminar. If this is not possible, the quiz/test will be made up during the first
seminar session after returning from the absence.
Students who turn assignments in late will receive a 20% reduction in grade for
every day the assignment is late. (No Credit can be earned after 4 days late).
If the assignment was completed during class and is collected at the end of the
hour, the assignment will NOT be accepted as late and will receive zero credit.
Academic Honesty
All students of Algonac High School are required to follow the Academic Honesty
Policy at all times. This includes homework, laboratory work, quizzes, tests, and
projects for this class and any other class at AHS. Failure to comply with this policy
will result in loss of credit and disciplinary action.
