11)
a) A flat 300mm long, 30mmX50mm uniform cross section is acted
upon by the following forces uniformly distributed over the respective
cross section. 20kN in the direction of length (tensile): 350kN in the
direction of the width (compressive) and 200kN in the direction of
thickness (tensile). Determine the change in volume of the flat. Take
E=140GN/m2, m=4.
OR
b) A steel bar is placed between two copper bars each having same area
and same length as the steel bar at 15C and rigidly connected at ends.
When the temperature rise by 300C, the length of the compound bars
increased by 1.5mm. Determine the original length and final stresses in
each bar. Es=200GPa, Ec=100GPa, S=12x10-6/C, C=17.5x10-6/C.
12)
a) Draw the shear force and bending moment diagram for a simply
supported beam of length 9m and carrying a uniformly distributed load of
10kN/m for a distance of 6m from the left end. Also calculate the
maximum Bending moment on the section.
OR
b) Draw the S.F and B.M diagrams for the overhanging beam of 6m length
carrying uniformly distributed load of 2kN/m over the entire length and a
point load of 2kN at right end. One support at left end and another
support at 4m from left end. Locate the point of contraflexure.
13)
a) A cast iron beam is of I-section with web 20mmX200mm, Top
flange 80mmX20mm, bottom flange 160mmX40mm which symmetric
about Y-axis. The beam is simply supported on a span of 5m. If the tensile
stress is not exceed 20N/mm2 find the safe uniformly load which the
beam can carry. Find also the maximum compressive stress.
OR
b) A beam with a span of 4.5m carries a point load of 30kN at 3m from
the left support. If for the section Ixx=54.97x10-6m4 and E=200GN/m2.
Find i) The deflection under the load and ii) The position and moment of
maximum deflection.
14)
a) A solid steel shaft is subjected to torque of 45kNm. If the angle of
twist is 0.5 per metre length of the shaft and the shear stress is not to be
allowed to exceed 90MN/m2. Find i) Suitable diameter of the shaft. ii)
Maximum shear stress and angle of twist and iii) Maximum shear strain in
the shaft. Take C=80GN/m2.
