HW 1

This document outlines the homework assignment for an electromagnetics course. The assignment includes 6 problems related to calculating electric fields from various charge distributions, including a hydrogen atom, bent rod, dipole, ring source, uniformly charged disk, and uniformly charged spherical surface. Students are asked to calculate electric fields analytically and use MATLAB to plot the field from the disk as a function of position. The deadline for submitting the assignment is October 28, 2016.

Homework Assignment 1

Deadline: October 28, 2016

Electromagnetics I
Prof. Dr. Gkhan nar
Eskiehir Osmangazi University
Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department

1. (Hydrogen Atom) In the classical model of the hydrogen atom, the electron revolves around the
proton with a radius of r = 5.3 1011 m. With e = 1.6 1019 C, the proton and the electron
have the charges e and e, respectively.
(a) What is the magnitude of the electric force between the proton and the electron?
(b) What is ratio of the magnitudes of the electrical and gravitational force between electron
and proton? Does the result depend on the distance between the proton and the electron?
(c) Give your comments of the ratio of the magnitudes of the electrical and gravitational forces.
2. A thin rod with a uniform charge per unit length L is bent into the shape of an arc of a circle of
radius a. The arc subtends a total angle 20 , symmetric about the xaxis. What is the electric
field at the origin?
3. Write a MATLAB program to calculate the electric field at a given position due to two point
charges +q and q located on the z-axis with a separation d. Write it with dipole formula

where p = qd (d r). Taking into account q = 108 C and P(1,1,1), compare the results
numerically for d = 0.1 m and d = 0.01 m.
4. A ring source of inner radius a and outer radius b, located on the xyplane with its center at the
origin, carries a uniform charge density of S . Determine the electric field at P (0, 0, h).
5. A disk of radius a, located on the xyplane with its center at the origin, carries a uniform charge
density of S . It is known that the electric field at P (0, 0, h) is

By using MATLAB, plot the magnitude of this electric field with respect to h/a for S = 2 108

6. A spherical surface of radius R carries a uniform charge density of S . Find the electric field at
P (0, 0, h) where h < R and h > R seperately. Express your results also in terms of the total
charge Q on the spherical surface.
