Assignment (6) : Problem 1: Choose The Most Suitable Answer For The Following

This document contains an engineering assignment with 3 problems related to structural analysis of silos. Problem 1 asks students to choose the most suitable answers for multiple choice questions related to silo dimensions, angle of repose, and granule flow properties. Problem 2 asks students to calculate working bulk density and coefficient of compressibility given loose and compacted bulk densities and classify the type of material flow. Problem 3 asks students to use Janssen's Method to determine maximum pressure intensities during filling and emptying of a 40m deep square silo storing corn.

Assignment (6)
Due Date: Monday 5 12 2016

Problem 1: Choose the most suitable answer for the following:

1. A silo with height of 40 m and diameter of 10 m is considered:
a) Shallow silo
b) Deep Silo

2. The coefficient of friction increases as the angle of repose increases:

a) True
b) False

3. A solid for which the unconfined yield strength = 0 is perfectly free flowing.
a) True
b) False

4. Considering the following range of angle of repose, which are considered free flowing granules:
a) 25 - 30
b) 30 38
c) 38 45
d) 45 - 55

Problem 2:
Knowing that the loose bulk density and the compacted bulk density for a material are 1.6 and 2.2 t/m3,
respectively. Calculate the working bulk density and the coefficient of compressibility. Accordingly,
classify the type of flow.

Problem 3:
A square silo-cell 5.0 m x 5.0 m and 40 m deep is used for storing corn, determine the maximum
pressure intensities during filling and emptying. Assume density = 0.8 t/m3 and = 30o. [Use Janssens
Method]
