Reflection Essay
Globalization in todays society usually produces a change.
Globalization isnt limited to a specific area or region it is worldwide
and spread as such. Its quite incredible the changes that encountering
another culture, religion, and people could do to an individual.
Sometimes with Globalization rather than just changing the people
around it, it will actually change even whole religions. One example
being the African Independent Churches (AICs), these churches are
actually a result of Globalization. These churches are a combination of
both traditional African religion and Christianity. The traditional African
religion is known as The way of Shona. Today this is known as
syncretism, or the amalgamation of different religions, cultures, or
schools of thought. This was brought about by a change by Christian
missionaries. However, mainly as a product of the African people
wanting to incorporate Christianity into their own religion.
Before missionaries of Christianity came to Africa, the religion
known as the way of Shona, was much different from that of the
African Independent Churches. Those who followed the way of Shona
were very focused on preservation of the environment. They believed

that any act against the environment for example cutting down trees
that werent needed to be cut down, was a sin. This distinct type of sin
against the environment was known as wizardry. For those who
would try and commence with the wizardy. The people of the way of
Shona would then call upon the varidzi venyika otherwise known as
the guardians of the land to protect the environment. In this religion
there was a centralized god known as Mwari, the Creator. While most
of the religion stayed true to itself upon the globalization effect only a
few things began to differ from within the religion. This inevitably
caused a classification difference from the way of Shona to the African
Independent Churches.
African Independent churches wanted to incorporate some of
Christianitys ideas while still staying true to their own beliefs and
systems. In this they kept the primary basis of their religion the same,
while just incorporating a few ideas of Christianity. For example the
biggest integration from Christianity came from the belief in Jesus
Christ. Jesus Christ in their context is the universal muridzi venyika or
the universal guardian of the land. He is the physical connection
between the humans that are currently on earth and the spiritual
ancestors that help protect the land. Christ in this setting is an activist
for maintaining the environment protection.
Overall I feel it is really interesting to see the effects that
globalization has on the earth that we live in. The reason being you

normally couldnt see somebody changing their beliefs just because a

stranger comes by and tells them otherwise. It is very unique to see
the open mindedness of people and the ability for people to come
together from different circumstances.
