EMC Avamar Software

EMC Avamar solves the challenges associated with traditional backup, enabling
fast, reliable backup and recovery for remote offices, data center LANs and
VMware environments. Avamar is backup and recovery software that utilizes
patented global data deduplication technology to identify redundant sub-file data
segments at the source, reducing daily backup data by up to 500x before it is
transferred across the network and stored to disk. This allows companies to
perform daily full backups even across congested networks and limited WAN links.
Key Avamar differentiators are:
Deduplicates backup data at the source before transfer across the network
Enables fast, daily full backups across existing networks and infrastructure
Reduces required daily network bandwidth by up to 500x
Up to 10x faster backups
Data encrypted in flight and at rest
Patented RAIN technology provides fault tolerance across nodes and eliminates
single points of failure

Important Terms and Concepts

GENERAL INFORMATION

Important Terms and Concepts

This topic introduces and discusses important terms and concepts that you should
familiarize yourself with before attempting to administer an Avamar system.
Avamar System. An Avamar system is a client/server network backup and
restore solution consisting of one or more Avamar servers and the network
servers or desktop clients that back up data to those servers. The Avamar system
also provides centralized management through the Avamar Administrator
graphical management console software application.
Avamar Server. An Avamar server is a logical grouping of one or more nodes
that is used to store and manage client backups.
NOTE: Hardware manufacturers typically call their equipment servers (for instance, the Dell PowerEdge 2950
server). In the context of an Avamar system, this equipment
is called a "node."

Node. An Avamar node is a self-contained rack-mountable network-addressable

computer that runs Avamar server software on the Linux operating system.
Hard Disk Storage. Avamar is a hard-disk based IP network backup and
restore solution. Avamar servers manufactured by EMC use internal hard disk
storage.
Stripes. A stripe is a unit of disk drive space managed by Avamar to ensure fault
tolerance.
AVAMAR DATA STORE GEN3 CUSTOMER SERVICE GUIDE

10

Important Terms and Concepts

GENERAL INFORMATION
Object. In the Avamar system, an object is a single instance of deduplicated
data. Each Avamar object inherently has a unique ID. Objects are stored and
managed within stripes on the Avamar server.
Data Deduplication. Data deduplication is a key feature of the Avamar system.
Data deduplication ensures that each unique sub-file, variable length object is
stored only once across sites and servers.
During backups, Avamar client software examines the client filesystem and applies
a data deduplication algorithm that identifies redundant data sequences and
breaks the client filesystem into sub-file, variable length data segments. Each data
segment is assigned a unique ID. The client software then determines whether or
not this unique ID has already been stored on the Avamar server. If this object
resides on the Avamar server, a link to the stored object is referenced in this
backup. Once an object has been stored on the server, it never has to be re-sent
over the network, no matter how many times it is encountered on any number of
clients. This feature greatly reduces network traffic and provides for greatly
enhanced storage efficiency on the server.

Replication. Replication is a feature that enables efficient, encrypted and

asynchronous replication of data stored in an Avamar server to another Avamar
server deployed in remote locations without the need to ship tapes. Replication is
a scheduled process between two independent Avamar servers, providing a higher
level of reliability for stored backups. Replication can be scheduled to run at offpeak hours to minimize bandwidth impact.

Functional Overview
GENERAL INFORMATION

Functional Overview
This topic provides detailed information about each part of the Avamar
client/server system and describes how the various parts interact with one
another.

Avamar Servers
All Avamar servers store client backups and also provide essential processes and
services required for client access and remote system administration.
A Word About Avamar Server Hardware Configurations. Avamar servers
are available in either single-node or scalable multi-node configurations. For the
most part, when using Avamar Administrator management console software, all
Avamar servers look and behave the same. The main differences among various
Avamar server configurations is the number of nodes and disk drives reported in
the server monitor.
Documenting specific differences in Avamar server hardware configurations is
beyond the scope of this publication. Whenever specific limitations and best
practices for certain configurations are known, they will be noted for your
convenience. However, these occasional notes should not be considered definitive
or exhaustive. Consult EMC Technical Support or your EMC reseller for additional
information about your specific hardware.
Nodes. The primary building block in any Avamar server is a node. Each node
is a self-contained rack-mountable network-addressable computer that runs
Avamar server software on the Linux operating system. Nodes can also contain
internal storage in the form of hard disk drives. If the node is configured with
internal storage (that is, a single-node server), it is internally mirrored to provide
robust fault tolerance.
Utility
Node

A node dedicated to scheduling and managing background Avamar

server jobs. In scalable multi-node Avamar servers, a single utility
node provides essential internal services for the server
(Management Console Server (MCS), cronjob, External
authentication, Network Time Protocol (NTP) and Web access).
Because utility nodes are dedicated to running these essential
services, they cannot be used to store backups.

Storage
Nodes

Nodes that store the actual backup data. Multiple storage nodes are
configured with multi-node Avamar servers based upon
performance and capacity requirements. Storage nodes can be
added to an Avamar server over time to expand performance with
no downtime required. Avamar clients connect directly with Avamar
storage nodes; client connections and data are load balanced
across storage nodes.

NDMP
Accelerator

A specialized node that utilizes NDMP in order to provide data

protection for NAS devices (EMC Celerra IP storage systems and
Network Appliance filers).

Single-Node Servers. Single-node Avamar servers combine all the features

and functions of utility and storage nodes on a single node.

Functional Overview
GENERAL INFORMATION

Avamar Administrator
Avamar Administrator is a graphical management console software application
that is used to remotely administer an Avamar system from a supported Windows
client computer.

Encryption
Avamar can encrypt all data sent between clients and the server in flight. Each
individual Avamar server can also be configured to encrypt data stored on the
server at rest.
In-Flight Encryption. In order to provide enhanced security during
client/server data transfers, Avamar supports two levels of in-flight encryption
(medium and high), which can be set on a client-by-client basis in client
properties, or for an entire group of clients in group properties. You can also turn
off in-flight encryption entirely.
At-Rest Encryption. The decision to encrypt all data stored in an Avamar
server is typically a one-time decision that is made when the server is initially
deployed at a customer site.

Logical Units
The RAID-1 (2 TB nodes) or RAID-5 (1 TB and 3.3 TB nodes) set in an Avamar
Data Store storage node is divided into four (1 TB node), three (2 TB node), or
two (3.3 TB node) equal size logical units (LUNs) at the RAID controller. LUNs are
mapped by the operating system.

REPLACING SERVER COMPONENTS

This chapter describes how to remove and replace various standard Avamar Data
Store Field Replaceable Units (FRUs). You should familiarize yourself with this
information and procedures in the following chapters before performing any
component removal or replacement.
NOTE: Refer to the Alternate Configurations section of the
Avamar Data Store System Installation Manual for additional
information about alternate configurations.

Assumptions and Prerequisites

Any failed FRU is assumed to be already nonfunctional and simply powering it off
will do no additional harm to the Avamar system. While this may not always be
the case, situations requiring additional system preparation before a FRU
replacement are deemed to be the exception, not the rule.
Furthermore, an assumption is made that Avamar Technical Support will have
already intervened in those situations to place the Avamar system in a safe and
stable condition such that the failed FRU can simply be powered off and replaced
without additional harm to the system.
Any discussion of system shutdown, troubleshooting or maintenance is beyond the
scope of these remove and replace procedures.
IMPORTANT: Avamar Technical Support should have provided you with the location of the defective FRU. If you do
not know this information, contact Avamar Technical Support
before continuing any further.
Do not perform any remove or replace procedure without
explicit instructions from Avamar Technical Support.

Avamar Data Store Component Location

REPLACING SERVER COMPONENTS

Avamar Data Store Component Location

An 18-node example of a standard Avamar Data Store initial configuration is
shown in the following diagram. Initial configurations can span from 3 to 18
nodes. When performing remove and replace procedures in this document, use
this diagram to determine component locations. Because previous component
replacement may have changed the arrangement of nodes at a customers site,
always verify the location of a defective component before continuing.

Each rack configuration has 20 slots, each one equivalent to a 2U increment.

Initially, the network switch is located at the bottom of the base configuration (in a
two-switch setup, the second switch is located in the 2U Filler slot) with the utility,
spare, and storage nodes stacked above it, in that order.
In configurations smaller than 18 nodes, unused expansion slots are located at the
top of the rack. Additional expansion nodes can be added in those slots starting
with the lowest numbered available slot. Since the spare can replace either a
defective utility or storage node, and because the last replacement node typically

becomes the new spare, the location of any specific kind of node can vary over
time.
Occasionally, Avamar Data Store is deployed in one or more alternate
configurations to fulfill unique customer requirements. See the Alternate
Configurations section of the ADS Gen3 System Installation manual.

REPLACING AVAMAR DATA STORE NODES

This chapter describes how to remove and replace Avamar Data Store nodes.
IMPORTANT: The node is heavy and should be installed in
a rack by two people. To avoid personal injury or damage to
the equipment, do not attempt to lift and install the node in
a rack without a mechanical lift or help from another person.
Before mounting the node to the rails, ensure that the ball
bearing retainer is locked forward.
When an existing node fails:
1. The spare node in the rack is placed into operation as the new storage or
utility node.
2. The replacement node is configured as the new spare node.
The presence of additional expansion nodes has no effect on this scenario because
those nodes should already be in operation as storage nodes. The only change
resulting from successive failures/fixes is the location of the spare node in the
rack.
NOTE: Refer to the Alternate Configurations section of the
Avamar Data Store System Installation Guide for information
about alternate configurations.
Coordinate with Avamar Technical Support when replacing a node.
IMPORTANT: One exception to the previous information
occurs when you replace the chassis of a node but retain the
original hard drives. Refer to Transplanting a Node (page
29).

Basic Node Remove and Replace Procedure

REPLACING AVAMAR DATA STORE NODES

Recommended Tools and Supplies

You might need the following items to replace an Avamar Data Store node:
Phillips-head screwdriver
Tie wraps
Flashlight

Basic Node Remove and Replace Procedure

Avamar Data Store Gen3 node hard drives and power supply modules are hotpluggable, and can be replaced individually. Refer to Replacing a Hard Drive (page
39) and Replacing a Power Supply (page 43) for instructions about replacing those
individual components. In all other cases of node failure in an Avamar Data Store
server, you must perform a full node replacement. Use the following procedures to
do this.
Telco Rack Installations. If you are replacing an ADS node in a Telco rack, the
rail assembly has three main parts (see next image):
Inner rail - a solid segment that attaches to the node
Front Tray Assembly - a segment that attaches to the front of the
Telco rack
Rear Tray Assembly - a segment that attaches to the rear of the
Telco rack

The procedure that follows uses the EMC Titan rack as an example. For Telco
installation, alter these instructions as required.

Transplanting a Node
REPLACING AVAMAR DATA STORE NODES

Transplanting a Node
Transplanting a node is a process that replaces the node chassis but retains the
original hard drives. This process is indicated when server troubleshooting
indicates both of the following:
Node failure is located in a chassis component (for instance, memory).
All hard drives are working and contain valid data.
IMPORTANT: Coordinate with Avamar Technical Support
when transplanting a node.
The following procedure is similar to the Basic Node Remove and Replace
Procedure (page 20) in that a standard Avamar node FRU has been delivered to
the customer site. The differences are the following:
The replacement node is placed into operation as the new storage or utility
node.
The current spare node remains the spare.
The follow-on configuration procedure described previously is not required.
1. Perform the Locate and Remove Defective Node (page 21) procedure.
2. Place the defective and replacement nodes on a workbench.
NOTE: Refer to Removing a Hard Drive (page 39) and
Installing a Hard Drive (page 40).
3. Remove all hard drives from the replacement node and set them aside.
4. Remove each hard drive on the defective node one at a time and install it
in the same drive bay in the replacement node.
IMPORTANT: Ensure that you install each hard drive in the
correct drive bay. Switching each hard drive one at a time
decreases the chances of error.
5. Perform the Install Replacement Node (page 24) procedure.
6. Power up the node.
RAID software recognizes the original hard drives and prompts you to
import them to the new chassis hardware.
7. Select Import.

REPLACING A HARD DRIVE

This chapter describes how to replace hot-pluggable hard drives in an Avamar
Data Store node's internal hard-drive bays. Each storage node features six
3.5-inch hard drives in removable carriers connected through a backplane to the
nodes system board.
NOTE: You must use only drives that have been tested and
approved for use with the Avamar Data Store server.
Replacement hard drives for the Avamar Data Store server arrive blank at the
customer site, but they require no manual configuration. RAID software
automatically rebuilds the hard drive image when the new hard drive is detected.
IMPORTANT: Although the hard drive is normally intended
for hot-swapping, Avamar Technical Support may choose to
shut down some of the software processes on the node to
expedite RAID rebuild.

Removing a Hard Drive

REPLACING A POWER SUPPLY

This chapter describes how to replace a power supply in an Avamar Data Store
Gen3 node. Each node contains two power supplies, the second of which serves as
a redundant, hot-swappable power source.
IMPORTANT: Coordinate with Avamar Technical Support to
perform the following procedures.
An Avamar Data Store node requires at least one power supply to operate
normally. The node is in redundant mode when two power supplies are installed
and both power supplies are connected to an AC power source. If either power
supply fails, it can be replaced during normal system operation.
The following conditions must be noted:
SCENARIO

REQUIREMENT

Power supply removal in

a powered-on node

Remove only one power supply at a time.

Extended operation with

only one power supply

If one power supply must be removed for a period of

time, the remaining power supply must be installed
in the left bay and a blank installed in the right bay.
IMPORTANT: Extended operation of a node with
only one functioning power supply and no blank can
cause the node to overheat.

Removing a Power Supply

IMPORTANT: When performing power supply replacement,
use appropriate electrostatic discharge precautions, including the use of a grounding strap.
1. From the back of the cabinet, identify the failed power supply.
Power supply LED indicators turn amber when it has failed.
2. Disconnect the power cable of the
failed power supply from both the
power source and the power supply.
3. Remove the power cable from the
Velcro strap.
4. Press the release latch and pull the
power supply out of the chassis. See
image at right.
IMPORTANT: Use caution when removing the failed power
supply. It may be hot.

Package Defective Power Supply and Return It to the Factory

Package the defective power supply and return it to the factory. Use the box and
packing from the replacement power supply.

Replacing a Power Supply

Before proceeding on a system with redundant power supplies, verify that the
functioning power supply and the replacement one are the same type with the
same maximum output power. The maximum output power (shown in watts) is
listed on the power supply label.
1. Using the functioning power supply as a guide, orient the new power
supply in the chassis opening.
2. Slide the new power supply into the chassis until it is fully seated and the
release latch snaps into place.
3. Connect the power cable to the power supply and the power source.
4. Secure the cable with the Velcro strap.
Allow several seconds for the node to recognize the power supply and
determine whether it is working properly. A green power supply status
indicator signifies the power supply is functioning properly.
