and explain the reasoning used.
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.

Place values determine the size of a number.

What does it mean to use place values to determine size of a

number for numbers between whole numbers?
Students will be able to use their knowledge and skills of comparing,
rounding, adding, subtracting, and averaging decimals to draw
conclusions.
The goal of the assignment is to get the article approved by the
editor so that it can be published in the East Rochester Times.
Sports Journalist for the East Rochester Times
Editor of the East Rochester Times
The students are given information about the 400 meter dash
runners from the previous two Olympics. They will need to analyze
these times in order to make a prediction about the runners from
the previous two Olympics to determine who will win this year.
The students will write a well written and supported journal article
about their predictions on the winner of the 2020 Summer
Olympics. Their article must include their prediction of the order of
the runners and an estimation of their times. This information must
be well supported by the information provided by the previous two
Olympic Games.
The students article will be judged by the editor using the rubric. In
order to receive an exemplary grade, the students must write a well
written article and include a prediction of the order of the runners,
an accurate estimation of their times, with a well-developed
explanation referencing the past to Olympic Games.

Task Overview:
In part 1, students will solve constructed response questions about Olympics racing
times, where they must compare, add, subtract, and average decimals.
In part 2, students will compare and subtract decimals in order to compare the data
and answer questions based on the 2012 and 2016 Olympic times.

In part 3, students will write an article about who they believe has the best chance
of winning the Olympics race in 2020 and why.
