Find a pair of integers with a sum of 14 and a difference of 2.
Show or explain how you got your answers. (handout)
Mini Lesson (15 25 minutes)
The Do Now will be discussed and emphasis on using algebra to
get the answers by linking the problem to a system of linear
equations:
y + x = 14
y x =2

Reading: The definition for a system of equations will be

presented to students.
Two or more linear equations together form a system of linear
equations. One way to solve a system of linear equations is by
graphing. Any point common to all the lines is a solution of the
system. So, any ordered pair that makes all the equations true is
a solution of the system.
The procedure in solving simultaneous equations graphically will
be presented to students:
Then using the assistance of the teacher students will graph the
solution for the system of the Do Now.
Differentiation
The lessons activity has been modified to cater to the needs of
the various types of learners in the classroom.

Step by step directions are provided for question 1 to

help guide struggling learners.
Students will use different color crayons to graph the

equations of the system.

Mini Lesson (15 25 minutes)

A graph where the lines do not intersect at integer values will be
presented on a slide so, students can identify the solution set.

This will be linked to using other methods to solve systems of

equations such as substitution in order to get a precise solution
to a system. Substitution allows us to create a one variable
equation.

Reading: The steps to solving a system of equation using

substitution will be presented to students:
1. Solve one of the equations for one of the variables.
2. Substitute the expression found in place of this variable in
the second equation. This results in an equation with one
variable.
3. Solve the equation with one variable.
4. Substitute the value of the variable obtained in step 3 in
either original equation and solve for the other variable.
5. Check the solution by substituting both variable values in
both equations.
Following the steps the solution to systems of linear equations
will be presented to students. Based on results students will be
guided into identifying the different types of solutions to systems
using the method of substitution.

CC.A.REI.6 Solving Linear Systems 1: Solve systems of linear equations

exactly and approximately (e.g., with graphs), focusing on pairs of linear
equations in two variables.

Do Now

With an example, explain the difference between elimination and

substitution.
The method of solving "by substitution" works by solving one of the
equations (you choose which one) for one of the variables (you choose
which one), and then plugging this back into the other equation,
"substituting" for the chosen variable and solving for the other. Then you
back-solve for the first variable.
Elimination works by adding or subtracting equations to get rid of one
variable and they solving for the remaining variable..

Reading and discussion:

When do we use elimination method?

In order to use the elimination method, you have to create variables that
have the same coefficientthen you can eliminate them.

Mini-Lesson 1 (15-25 mines)

Essential Understanding

An equation is use to compare two quantities

To solve equation, use property of equality, inverse operations and
property of real number
Use the property until you isolate the variable

SOLVING SYSTEMS OF EQUATION ALGEBRAICALY

1. Place both equations in Standard Form, Ax + By = C.

2. Determine which variable to eliminate with Addition or
Subtraction.
3. Solve for the variable left.
4. Go back and use the found variable in step 3 to find
second variable.
5. Check the solution in both equations of the system

Solving Systems by Elimination

Use elimination to solve the system.
2x + y = 12

3x + y = 22

You can eliminate the y-variable if you add the opposite of one of the
equations to the other equation.
2x + y = 12
3x y = 2
5x = 10
Rewrite the second equation as its opposite. Add.
x=2

Solve for x.

CFU : Discuss and share the meaning of systems of equation
