Example of Ieng - Imeche
In the Conceptual Study and Design of CW project, I was the owner of all the
piping drawings and documents along with some of the common documents. I
prepared the following documents;
Design Basis
Tie in Study Report including Tie in Schedule
Integration / Changeover Methodology
Early Tie in Package and Methodology
Piping Material Specification
Valve Selection Study
Tie In Isometrics (Only Early Tie In)
Cost Estimate for piping
Preliminary MTO for cost estimate
The approach I adopted in preparing the common document especially
Integration/Changeover Methodology was lauded by the client project manager
as the same was supposed to be prepared by chemical engineers in the process
department.
B3. How have you implemented design solutions, and contributed to
their evaluation?
I worked with the designers on the task described under B2 above to develop an
optimum piping layout. Optimization was possible by conducting regular site
visits, brainstorming sessions with the project team and Clients project team.
Outputs from these sessions were incorporated in the piping layout. Piping
Layout was done in AutoCAD.
C1. How have you planned for effective project implementation?
I have prepared many proposals, estimation of tasks and agree the same with
the project manager, in Atkins as well as in my previous companies.
For the task described under B2 above, I understood the technical definition of
the bid and scope of work as agreed with the client. With the scope of work in
place, project plan was developed and I checked whether the plan has taken
sufficient margins of the risks identified.
I also checked the project schedule that was developed as a part of the project
plan.
Execution of the project was carried out as per the project management plan and
I ensured that variance between planned and actual are kept to a minimum.
C2. How have you managed the planning, budgeting and organisation of
tasks, people and resources?
I implemented the project plan developed during the planning stage for the task
described under B2 above. I ensured that project deliverables were issued
complying with the accepted guidelines, international codes & standards and
safety requirements with minimum cost over runs.
I also worked with the project manager to manage the situations of cost over
runs by deferring few tasks to another project level so that the over runs are kept
to a minimum. I was involved in training the new project staff and I effectively
delegated the required work to engineers and designers.
C3. How have you managed teams and developed staff to meet
changing technical and managerial needs?
For the task described under B2 above, I led a team of 1 engineer and 3 to 5
technicians who were responsible for the producing the optimum piping layout.
I was responsible to provide feedbacks to the team, develop the team to the
required skillset and motivate them to help achieve the objectives of the project.
Project team met regularly with the client (either face to face meetings or
polycom meetings) at the beginning of every week to assess the situation. Once
the meeting was over, I used to meet my team and brief them about the
outcome. I also met my team every Thursday to take note of the task completed
and task to be completed for the coming week.
This has helped to nurture my managing and communication skills to a great
extent.
C4. How have you managed continuous quality improvement?
I ensured that our team follows the quality standards outlined in the project
quality plan.
I also ensured that version control is maintained. This involved recording
changes by maintaining check sheets for every document/drawing. This helped
traceability of the latest document/drawing to the entire project team. Procedure
of Inter-departmental check were put in place, documents/drawings are signed
off by all the team members involved in the task which includes the Originator,
Checker, Reviewer and Authoriser. I continuously monitored the status of the
project and ensured that all the stakeholders are informed about the status,
challenges if any so that the objectives are met.
D1. How have you communicated in English with others at all levels?
English is considered as official written language for communicating (both in
present and previous companies). I have learnt English from my elementary
schooling.
I have prepared documents on piping specifications and other general
documents in English. For the task described under B2 above, I contributed to
the documents listed.
I have also reviewed and checked the specifications prepared by other engineers.
I regularly interact with the project managers of both Atkins and the Client,
updating the project status and interacting closely for any technical issues.
D2. How have you presented and discussed proposals?
Task described under B2 above consisted of two parts, Conceptual Study and
Conceptual Design.
When we finished the conceptual study, I presented (in the form of power point
presentation) the entire option study which included the option that we are
recommending. The audience present was the top management of Atkins and
the Client.
During the conceptual design, I did a lot of presentation to show the client that
we are in line with the project objectives.
D3. How have you demonstrated personal and social skills?
My company appraisal process involves seeking feedback every mid-year and
the development is monitored every quarter. With this appraisal I have learned
about my strengths and weaknesses and has helped me to improve on my
weaknesses.
During my tenure at Saankhya Techneering, owing to the market demand of 3D
modelling, I took this opportunity to train 20 of my colleagues in PDMS modelling
and 2 in PDMS administration and modelling.
You should give an example of: Where you have applied ethical principles as
specified in the Engineering Councils
Statement of Ethical Principles / Where you have applied/upheld ethical
principles as defined by your organisation
or company, which may be in its company or brand values
Be alert to the ways in which their work might affect others and duly
respect the rights and reputations of other parties
Avoid deceptive acts, take steps to prevent corrupt practices or
professional misconduct, and declare conflicts of interest
Reject bribery or improper influence
Act for each employer or client in a reliable and trustworthy manner
Be aware of the issues that engineering and technology raise for society,
and listen to the aspirations and concerns of others
Actively promote public awareness and understanding of the impact and
benefits of engineering achievements
Engineering Council
Operating under a Royal Charter, the Engineering Council is the UK regulatory
body for the engineering profession. It sets and maintains the internationally
recognised standards of professional competence and commitment, which are
detailed in the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC).
The Engineering Council also holds the national register of professional
Engineering Technicians (EngTech), Incorporated Engineers (IEng), Chartered
Engineers (CEng) and ICT Technicians (ICTTech). Holders of these titles must be
members of a professional engineering institution licensed by the Engineering
Council or in some cases a Professional Affiliate. In order to achieve registered
status individuals will have demonstrated to their institution that they possess a
range of technical and personal competences and are committed to keeping
these up to date, and to acting with integrity in the public interest. The award
and retention of these titles ensures that employers, government and wider
society - both in the UK and overseas can have confidence in the knowledge,
experience and commitment of engineers and technicians on the register.
Royal Academy of Engineering
As the UKs national academy for engineering, we bring together the most
successful and talented engineers for a shared purpose: to advance and promote
excellence in engineering.
We provide analysis and policy support to promote the UKs role as a great place
to do business. We take a lead on engineering education and we invest in the
UKs world-class research base to underpin innovation. We work to improve
public awareness and understanding of engineering. We are a national academy
with a global outlook.
We have four strategic challenges: drive faster and more balanced economic
growth; foster better education and skills; lead the profession; and promote
engineering at the heart of society
