Unit 5 Mastery Project

This lesson plan aims to review the classification of organisms and how they depend on the environment through blended learning activities. Students will be placed into groups to research and present on organism classification, play a classification sorting app, and take a Kahoot quiz to test their knowledge. The PowerPoint, YouTube video, app, and Kahoot activities are designed to reinforce student understanding of classifying organisms and their environments in an engaging way.

Technology Enhanced Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title: Classifying Organisms

Context: This lesson will be a review of Organisms and their classifications, as well as how they
depend on the environment.

Objectives:
Students will be able to classify different organisms found in the environment
Students will be able to challenge their knowledge of organisms

State Standards:
Standard K.L.2: The student will demonstrate an understanding of organisms found in the
environment and how these organisms depend on the environment to meet those needs.
Materials: PowerPoint, YouTube video, Classify it! app, Kahoot!

Procedures:
Introduction (10min): I will begin class by taking roll. After roll call, I will explain the Blended
Learning sections to the class, and count them into groups of 5.
Teacher Directed (15 min): I will breeze through my PowerPoint which touches on organism
classification and the environments they depend on. I will ask if any students have any questions.
Following any questions, I will show the class the YouTube video called Classification of
Living Things.
Collaborative (15 min): In their groups, the students are required to research organisms and their
levels of classification. Each student will present their research to their group members, and each
member of the group will match each presented organism with an organism that is similar.
Independent Digital Content (15 min): Students are required to take an iPad to their desk and
play on the app called Classify it!. Students will be challenged to sort and group organisms to
their correct classification.
Closure (20 min): On their iPads, students will log onto the Kahoot! App. I will have 10
questions based on different types of organisms, different types of environments, etc. Students
must get at least 8/10 of the questions correct in order to leave class.

Rationale:
YouTube video: The video I will show is called Classification of Living Things. This video
will serve as extra review of the types of organisms and their classification. It will help students
with their Blended Learning activities.
Classify it!: The students will use this app to challenge themselves with sorting and grouping
different organisms. Students will be able to play on levels that range from easy intermediate
advanced. The more they advance, they can unlock more levels that will expand their knowledge
in organisms and their classification.
Kahoot!: This app will be a fun and positive way for the students to test their knowledge, as well
as a good way for me to monitor each students progress with the material. If a student cant get
the 8/10 questions that is required for an exit ticket, I will be able to offer them any extra help
they may need.
