Solar Calculations: Converting Power (Watts or KW) To Energy (KWH)

This document contains calculations to estimate the energy output and installation cost of a proposed 57,000 square foot solar panel system. It estimates that the system would generate 513 kW of power per day, or 936,225 kWh (units) per year if receiving full sunlight, but 748,980 kWh/year if shaded 20% of the time. The approximate installation cost is calculated to be 153.9 lakhs (15.39 million) based on a cost of 30 rupees per watt of solar panel capacity.

Solar Calculations

According to rule of thumb modern photo-voltaics (PV) solar panels will produce 8-10
watts/square foot of solar panel area. (usage of high efficient solar-panels can produce 12-14
watts/square foot).
So . for 57k square foot (considering average 9 watts/square foot)
Power = (57k) x 9=513 kilo watts = 513kW

Converting Power (watts or kW) to Energy (kWh)

Consider 5 hours of sunlight per day.
i.e,
Energy = (513kW) x 5 =2565 kWh per day = 2565 units per day
( Note : 1 kWh = 1 unit )
Calculation for year , considering 365 days ,
Energy = = (513kW) x 5 x365 = 936225 kWh per year = 9,36,225 units per year
If the PV panels are shaded for part of the day, the output would be reduced in accordance to the
shading percentage. For example, if the PV panels receive 4 hours of direct sun shine a day
(versus the standard 5 hours), the panels are shaded 1 divided by 5 = 20% of the time (80% of
assumed direct sun shine hours received).
In this case, the output of a 57000 square-foot PV panel system would be
936225 kWh per year x 80% = 748980 kWh per year = 748980 units per year

Approximate calculation of installation cost

1 watt solar panel cost will be around 30/So, for 57000 square foot means
Plant capacity = 57000 x 9 = 513kilo watts
Cost = (513k) x 30 = 15390000 = 153.9 lacks
