(a) The application should be submitted only OFF LINE after downloading
application form through institute web site www.svnit.ac.in .The
application form dully filled in all respect should be sent to The
Registrar, SVNIT, Ichchhanath, Surat-395007
(b) Candidates must submit the application and processing fee, Rs.1000/ (for Open/OBC) and Rs.500/-(SC/ST) in the form of demand draft
drawn in favour of Director, SVNIT Surat payable at Surat and
required certificates as envisaged in the information brochure at the
time of application. The original documents are to be shown at the time
of counseling, in the absence of these documents, candidates will not be
interviewed. Application and processing fee will not be refundable.
(b) The applicants can apply through out year after downloading the
application form institute website. Those applications will be processed
twice in a year. The applications received till June 30 and November 30
shall be processed in July and December respectively for admission in
each year. The schedule for interviews of those applicants will be
notified separately on institute website in the month of July and
December.
(c) No separate interview call letter shall be sent to individual candidates.
(d) Policy of reservation will be adopted for the Admission as per the guide
lines of the MHRD released from time to time.

THE INSTITUTE
The Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT), Surat is
one of the twenty higher Institutes of Technology in the country set up with the
objectives of making available facilities for higher education, research and
training in various fields of Engineering and Technology.
The Institute campus is spread over 100 hectors of land on the SuratDumas Road. The Institute was established in 1961 as one of the Regional
Engineering Colleges for imparting technical education in Civil, Mechanical and
Electrical
Engineering.
Subsequently
the
UG
Programme
in
Electronics
Engineering, Computer Engineering and Production Engineering, and Chemical
Engineering were respectively introduced in the year 1983-84, 1988-89 and
1995-96. At present, the Institute is offering seven UG Programmes with an
intake of 450 students which may be increased due to the reservation policy to
be decided by the appropriate authority. In addition to the above, 20 students
are admitted through Government of India from foreign countries. The Institute
is at present offering the following PG Programmes with an intake of 18 students
which may be increased due to the reservation policy to be decided by the
appropriate authority.

RESEARCH FACILITIES
All the departments of the institute have well equipped research
laboratories and computational facilities. In addition, there are a few central
facilities, which include Computer Center, Central Library and Workshop. The
Central Library has a large collection of books, back volumes of periodicals,
standards and other literature. The Library has now more than 1.25 lakhs
books and volumes and subscribes to over 1500 current journals in
Engineering and Applied Sciences. Further, institute has received grant to the
tune of Rs 22 Crores under Technical Education Quality Improvement
Programme of World Bank. Out of this almost 80% has been utilized in very
high
level
infrastructure
development,
including
Sophisticated
Instrumentation Laboratory, Media Laboratory, and CAD Laboratory where
most recent softwares have been procured for high level research.

STUDENT AMENITIES
Institute is fully residential and has 9 hostels for students. Each hostel
is an independent entity with its own mess facilities, recreation areas, etc.
Construction of another ladies hostel and an independent hostel for post
graduate students as well as research scholars is in completion stage.
However students may be permitted to have their own arrangement for
accommodation outside the campus.
Extra curricular activities are supported through Students Council.
The activities include sports, cultural programmes, a national level technical
symposium for students (MINDBEND) etc.
4.
Ph. D. PROGRAMMES
The Institute offers Doctorate Programmes leading to Ph. D. in various
disciplines. The aim of the Programme is to train the candidates in high level
theoretical and experimental expertise that enables them to tackle practical
complex problems of design and development in the industrial fields as well as
pursue of further academic achievements through research. Enough flexibility is
provided in the structure of the Programme to help the candidates to achieve
the above-mentioned aim. The departments are equipped with sufficient
facilities for these purposes. The Institute offers Programme of minimum three
years for the full time candidates and part time candidates. The maximum
period allowed for full time candidates is five years and for part time external
candidates is seven years.
Every stream of specialization in the Programme will have a curriculum
and syllabus for the courses approved by the Senate. The full time research
scholars have to complete 12 credit requirements in the form of course work
and credit seminar in first two semesters whereas the part time scholars have to
complete the same in first two years. For directly admitted students, the credit
structure is 48 credits. Continuance of Ph. D. registration will be subjected to
fulfillment of these initial course credit requirements.
5.
ELIGIBILITY FOR ADMISSION
The eligibility for admission to Ph. D. in Engineering Faculty, Science
Faculty, Humanities and Social Science Faculty and Interdisciplinary areas is:
1. A candidate shall possess Masters Degree in relevant area of Research
and should have passed with at least second-class with minimum 50%
(CGPA = 5.0) or equivalent in respective Engineering faculty and 60%
in other cases.
2. If a student of full-time M.Tech./M. Phil. programme at the Institute
wants to change over to a Ph.D. programme of the Institute, he
may be permitted to do so from the beginning of the second year
provided:
a) He has obtained a CGPA of 9.0 or above after having
registered for the full credits of course work in each of the first
and second semester of M. Tech. / M. Phil Programme.
b) Once a student changes to Ph.D. Programme, thereafter he
is governed by the Regulations of the Ph.D. Programme of the
Institute.
3. Candidate who have qualified for award of Bachelor's degree in
Engineering / Technology with exceptionally good academic record
(CGPA 9.0/equivalent marks or higher) in prescribed discipline will
also be considered for direct admission to Ph.D. Programme subject
to the following conditions:
a) Minimum 5 year of research experience in the reputed organization and
b) Have published minimum 2 papers in peer reviewed International
Journal(s) or have minimum 2 patents (Indian or International)
awarded to him/ her.
c) He should be eligible for admission to M. Tech. Programme in that
particular stream by virtue of his excellent GATE score.
d) He will be registered as full time research scholar with minimum 4
years of duration.
6.

Candidate working in any Public/Private sector organization or
Research Laboratory / Organisations who is willing to pursue
Research on part-time basis.
Note:
Full-time Institute Research Scholars are recipients of the Institute
scholarships and are governed by the Scholarship rules.
Full-time Research Scholars paid by Government/Semi-Government
organizations such as CSIR, UGC, QIP, DAE, AICTE, etc. will receive their
stipend and contingency grants from their respective supporting
organizations. The format for the sponsorship letter for full-time is given in
appendix I. They have to produce at the time of registration the reliving
certificate as given in appendix- II.
Full-time sponsored candidates are recipients of complete financial
support including stipend, contingency grants and project expenses from
the sponsoring organizations. The format for the sponsorship letter for fulltime is given in appendix I. They have to produce at the time of
registration the reliving certificate as given in appendix- II.
Part-time Institute Faculty/Staff, Project Staff are expected to work
for their Ph.D. Programme while fulfilling their normal duties.
Part-lime External candidates are allowed to carry out their Research
work at the Institute or at their parent organization (subjected to
fulfillment of other requirements, rules and regulations laid down by the
senate) after fulfilling certain pre-requisites at the Institute. They are not
entitled to Institute scholarship. The external candidate shall produce a
relevant sponsorship in the format given in appendix III or the no
objection certificate from his/her employer. They have to produce at the
time of registration the reliving certificate as given in appendix- IV.
Full-time Self-financing candidates are expected to work full-time and are
subject to the rules of the Institute.
Full time Study Leave Candidates are expected to work full time at the
institute. They are not entitled to institute scholarship. Such candidates are
required to produce sponsorship certificate from their organization and
submit it along with the application for admission. The format for sponsorship
certificate for external candidates is given in Appendix V.
7.
ADMISSION CRITERIA FOR Ph. D. PROGRAMMES
I.
NON - SPONSORED CANDIDATES :
a) GENERAL CATEGORY :
M. E. / M. Tech. or Equivalent with a minimum of 50% marks in all
semesters/years in M. E. / M. Tech. (CGPA = 5.0)
Preference will be given to GATE qualified candidates.
b) RESERVED CATEGORY :
M. E. / M. Tech. or Equivalent with a minimum of 45% marks in all
semesters/years M. E. / M. Tech. (CGPA = 4.5)
Preference will be given to GATE qualified candidates.
II. SPONSORED CANDIDATES :
a) GENERAL CATEGORY :
M. E. / M. Tech. or Equivalent with a minimum of 50% marks in all
semesters/years either in M. E. / M. Tech. (CGPA = 5.0)
Preference will be given to GATE qualified candidates.
b) RESERVED CATEGORY :
M. E. / M. Tech. or Equivalent with a minimum of 45% marks in all
semesters/years either in M. E. / M. Tech.
Preference will be given to GATE qualified candidates. (CGPA = 4.5)
NOTE :
(i) In addition to above criteria, the eligibility for admission to Doctorate
Programme will also be governed under Clause 5 ELIGIBILITY FOR
ADMISSION.
(ii)The final selection to Doctorate Programme under all categories will be
strictly subjected to the performance of the candidate in interview before
respective selection committee.
8.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE
The
candidates
have
to
submit
an
Application
and
processing
Fee
(Nonrefundable) of Rs.1000/-(for Open/OBC) and Rs.500/-(SC/ST) with
the application. The fee has to be submitted in the form of crossed Demand
Draft in favour of The Director, SVNIT, Surat payable at Surat .
The list of candidates called for the interview shall be put on the
Institute website http://www.svnit.ac.in in the month of July and
December.
FILLING UP THE FORM
a) After carefully reading the instruction given in the brochure, fill in the
application form.
b) Candidate should complete the application form in all respects.
Incomplete application forms will be rejected.
c) Forms should be filled neatly and cleanly.
d) For SC/ST candidate Fresh Caste Certificate must be attached with
application form.
e) For OBC candidates, if applicable, the certificates will be required to be
produced as per the decision of the appropriate authority.

9.
FEES AND DEPOSITS
The complete fee structure is given in Appendix - VI.
10.
FINANCIAL SUPPORTS
The Full-time Institute Research Scholars will be paid scholarship at a rate
in accordance with the directives from the appropriate authorities. They are
eligible to receive scholarship for a maximum period of three years.
11.
REGISTRATION FOR Ph. D. DEGREE
Every student after consulting his Supervisors is required to register for
the approved courses with the Course Coordinator of respective Department
at the commencement of each semester on the day fixed for such
registration and notified in the Academic Calendar.
Candidates who do not register till the day announced for the purpose
may be permitted for late registration up to maximum one week on payment
of late fee.
12.
RULES & REGULATIONS
All the research scholars shall be governed by the rules & regulations laid
down by the institute fro time to time.
All Full-time candidates have to carry out Research in the Institute at
least for a period of three years from the date of registration before
submission of thesis. Part-time candidates have to carry out Research for at
least a period of three years from the date of registration before submission
of thesis. The above duration is inclusive of the Course Work and Credit
Seminar.
