Notebook 9

The document discusses heat unit calculations for three types of x-ray generators. It provides the formulas and works through examples to calculate the heat units generated using different kilovolt peaks, milliamperes, and seconds for a single-phase, three-phase, and high frequency generator. The scenarios show that three-phase generators produce the most heat units while high frequency generators produce the fewest. Heat units determine the safe operating capacity of the x-ray tube and technique factors.

Single-Phase Generator:
Formula: HU = kVp x mA x s x 1.00(rectification constant)
Scenario: How many heat units are generated when you use 60kVp,
600mA, and 0.06 seconds with a single-phase generator?
HU = 60 kVp x 600 mA x 0.06 s = 2,160 HU
Three-Phase Generator:
Formula: HU = kVp x mA x s x 1.35 (rectification constant)
Scenario: How many heat units are generated when you use 80 kVp,
500 mA, and 0.05 seconds with a three-phase generator?
HU = 80 kVp x 500 mA x 0.05 s x 1.35 = 2,700 HU
High Frequency Generator:
Formula HU = kvP x mA x s x 1.4(rectification constant)
Scenario How many heat units are generated when you use 70 kVp,
400 mA, and 0.04 seconds with a high frequency generator?
HU = 70 kVp x 400 mA x 0.04 s x 1.4 = 1,568 HU
These scenarios describe that the x-ray tube capacity is measured in
heat units. The large amounts of heat units determine the technique
(kVp, mA, s), which are generated. Heat unit determines if it is safe for
the anode/tube to operate correctly.
