Rule"ajobtakesaslongasittakes"andthesecondRule"don'ttryandcutcorners".
Anengineeringestimateisasgoodastheguypreparingtheestimate.Ifhehasinsufficient
experiencethentheestimateismorelikeaguesstimate!!!.

acopy)wherestablishforthetypeofengineeringyouraregoingtodo(Conceptual,Basic,Detail)the
typicaldocumentsanddrawingsrequiredbyeachdiscipline.Withthat,andsomecriteriaofyourown,
suchasdetermininghowmanyProcessFlowDiagrams(PFDs)forinstancemightberequiredtoa
certainjob,youestimatethemanhours.InthecompanywhreIwork,aengineeringconsultant,that
isdonebyseniorengineersofeachdiscipline(Process,Mechanical,Electrical,etc).Youascoordinator
putalthemanhourstogheterandestimatethestaffhourssuchasProjectManager,Engineering
Coordinator,Planner,ContractAdministrator,CostEstimators,etc.Manyofthosearefulltime,some
arepartialtime,asmightbethecaseofcostestiamtor,whichisrequiredonceyouahavesizedthe
mainequipmentorbillofmaterials,dependingofthetypeofengineering.
Otherthingisdeterminethecategoriesofrequiredengineers,basedontheirexperience.Themore
earlystageinengineering,themoreexperiencedengineersyourequired.Forinstance,fora
conceptualengineering,youmightrequiremoreexperiencedengineers,asmoredesigncriteriais
required.Alsoformanhoursestimatesyouhavetousejudgment,asamoreexperiencedengineer
candevelopesometaskmorequicklyandefficientlythatalesexperiencedone,butismorecostly.
