Video Graphy Sept 11
Welcome to the sixth provisional edition of the Rory Gallagher Videography. Sorry for the long time it took me
to provide you with an update.
What's new? I just recently found out about a couple of early Taste and Rory Gallagher shows about which I
had no idea that they had been existing at all. This does in particular account for the french tv show "Point
Chaud" that broadcasted a bit of Taste's performance at the 1969 Gala de la Rose d'Or (special thanks to
Franois Geraud for informing me!) as well as a virually unknown in-studio perfomance of Rory in late 1974. I
believe that a copy of this footage might still be existing at the INA archives in Bry-sur-Marne in France.
Also I managed to bring some clarification into the much disputed question whether there has been footage of
a 1970 Taste performance in Montreux. I had my doubts initially, but now it seems that the show that was to
be released as "Live Taste" LP was actually also filmed. Evidence for this assumption is growing stronger,
since not only Claude Nobs, founder of the Montreux Jazz Festival, stated in an interview that this footage was
in existence but it seems that we also have surviving footage from the same concert series (Super Pop
Montreux) of Santana.
I intend this release to be the final provisional edition of the videography - the next edition will be the first
revised editon. I will also try to include an in-depth review of all material that is included on the latest Blu-Ray
release of the Irish Tour movie/the Limerick performance.
Thank you for your patience and confidence.
Lars

There is reason to believe that this episode of LNL-U was filmed in colour: LNL-U was produced in Pres B, a
small studio at the BBC Television Centre in London. Pres B was special in regards to equipment; as early as
1966 it was furnished with three colour cameras and used as the BBCs test room for colour television.
Note that the very same studio can be seen in Rorys 1973 appearance on Old Grey Whistle Test.

Broadcast in two parts. A couple of years ago, rumours did the rounds that a copy of the footage was
in the hands of a collector and also screened to a small, selected audience at the annual
Ballyshannon festival. This could, in the course of the years, neither been verified nor refuted.
Though it might seem rather unlikely, there is indeed a slight chance that a copy of the master, that
would have been wiped later, could have survived: First of all, to my knowledge, the BBC's dire wiping
policy has been effectuated less rigorously by the BBC Northern Ireland, which is believed to have
been in charge of the production of the show (this does, however, not alter the fact, that the footage
could not be located in any of the BBC archives anymore). Secondly, there is the encouraging
example of Bob Pratt, a BBC technician in the late 1960's, who used to copy a large number of tapes
that were scheduled to be wiped. It is by his courtesy that e.g. Jimi Hendrix' famous appearance on
the "Lulu Show" (1968) could be recovered for the BBC archives (http://www.liveleak.com/view?
i=ebc_1267927385). It is not know whether Pratt was in possession of any Taste or Rory related
footage but the possibility alone seems to have a certain fascination on me.

* the term keying is referring to the so called Chroma Key technique that has been used in most of the post-
1960s episodes of the Beat-Club series. The artists have been filmed in front of a so called blue- or
greenscreen, which has later been pasted over with an image still or another film sequence. Many of this
keyed Beat Club appearances of Rory obviously also still exist in their original un-keyed versions, as for
example In Your Town from the 26.12.1971 session (see below). This session is available as part of the

Preceeding the original tv broadcast of the 1. Rocknacht on July 23rd 1977 was a live programme called Wort
zum Sonntag (message for Sunday) which overran airtime. When the channel switched to Rockpalast, Rory
was already performing and the viewers had missed the first three songs of his show. Whathas been used for
the DVD release is some sort of reconstruction of the programme as it was originally intended to be. I recently
have been informed that there actually has been a complete master for this show (without the cut in Garbage
Man and the introductionary sequence) but that it has somehow vanished from the archives and could not be
found anymore.

The National Foresters are, despite what one might guess from the name, a motorcycle club. A full length
version of this show might be in existence. I am still not sure whether to classify this as pro-shot or not, since
although it has definitely been filmed with professional equipment it is a "monocam" video. The sound quality
of my copy worsens extremely after Bullfrog Blues.

Out on the Western Plain (excerpt)
Short but very emotional, sad interview. Rory: Life is short, but we must take time to think, to
develop (to progress). My writing is getting better, my playing is getting better, I'm much more happy
today as a musician. I'm not happy as a person, but I'm happy as a musician". Thanks to Franois for

Since this is an official account on Rory and his lifetime, I was quite curious whether we would find any film
material included that we did not know before. Although this is not the case with the documentary part of the
DVD set alone, I'm still satisfied with the choice of footage we get to see in the course of the film. Between
many interviews (mostly musicians), we get to see cuts from the following shows and DVDs: Irish Tour 1974,
Limerick 11.05.1972 (interview snippet), Beat Clubs 28.02.1970 and 26.12.1971, Rockpalast
1976, 1977 and 1982, Me and My Music 14.02.1977, The Late Late Show 12.02.1988, Lorient
08.08.1994, and, maybe the most interesting piece of film from a collector's point of view, Bilzen
22.08.1969. The fact that nothing from the Live in Cork or Montreux DVDs is included, could
indicate that the film was actually finished earlier than Summer 2006. One should not take Ghost
Blues as a hint for which footage is in the Gallagher archives and which is not because not even
material from the newly available Beat Club sessions is included here. I have not much
understanding of the business/legal aspects of producing a DVD but what struck me was that no
footage from the Taste Isle of Wight show was used for the respective part of the documentary.
The second disc, The Beat Club Sessions, contains tv footage from 1971 and 1972 that, to a large
extent, has not been available before. In my opinion, there is no reason to call the DVD a complete or
definite Beat Club Sessions, but it's certainly one of the most exciting releases available by now.
Although fortunately (!) the producers refrained from formatting the original 4:3 image to 16:9, I
assume that there was a slight loss of quality when the footage was re-encoded from PAL to NTSC.
Also, the previously unreleased material found on this DVD has now been keyed. To be honest, I did
not like that very much in the Beat Club episodes I have known before, so I do not really like it here.
Nevertheless, that is only a very minor point of critic I want to make.
This is an overview about what is contained and what is missing on The Beat Club Sessions:
