Assignment # 7
Dynamics of Machine Components
Problem 1: The mass of flywheel of an engine is 6.5 tones and the radius of gyration is 1.8 meters. It is
found from the turning moment diagram that the fluctuation of energy is 56 kN.m. If the mean speed of
the engine is 120 rpm, find the maximum and minimum speeds.
Problem 2: An engine flywheel has a mass of 6.5 tones and the radius of gyration is 2 m. If the maximum
and minimum speeds are 120 rpm and 118 rpm respectively, find maximum fluctuation of energy.
Problem 3: A horizontal cross compound steam engine develops 300 kW at 90 rpm. The coefficient of
fluctuation of energy as found from the turning moment diagram is to be 0.1 and the fluctuation of speed
is to be kept within 0.5% of the mean speed. Find the weight of the flywheel required, if the radius of
gyration is 2 meters.
Problem 4: A vertical double acting steam engine develops 75 kW at 250 rpm. The maximum fluctuation
of energy is 30 percent of the work done per stroke. The maximum and minimum speeds are not to vary
more than 1 percent on either side of the mean speed. Find the mass of the flywheel required, if the radius
of gyration is 0.6 m.
Problem 5: A single cylinder, single acting, four stroke cycle gas engine develops 20 kW at 250 rpm. The
work done by the gases during the expansion stroke is 3 times the work done on the gases during the
compression stroke. The work done on the suction and exhaust strokes may be neglected. If the flywheel
has a mass of 1.5 tones and has a radius of gyration of 0.6 m, find the cyclic fluctuation of energy and the
coefficient of fluctuation of speed.
Problem 6: The turning moment diagram for a four stroke gas engine may be assumed for simplicity to
be represented by four triangles, the areas of which from the line of zero pressure are as follows: Suction
stroke = 0.45 103 m2; Compression stroke = 1.7 103 m2; Expansion stroke = 6.8 103 m2; Exhaust
stroke = 0.65 103 m2. Each m2 of area represents 3 MN-m of energy. Assuming the resisting torque to
be uniform, find the mass of the rim of a flywheel required to keep the speed between 202 and 198 rpm.
The mean radius of the rim is 1.2 m.
