Handout - CDMP Unit 1 Lesson 11

The document discusses representations in media and provides examples from the British TV show Misfits. It defines representation as how aspects of society are presented in media texts. Encoding and decoding are the processes of creating and understanding representations. Representations are constructed through selection. The opening scene of Misfits represents youth as violent, immature, rude, and self-centered. Each character's power reflects aspects of their own personality, such as a shy character having invisibility. While initially representing youth negatively, the show provides depth to the criminal characters, revealing them to just be misunderstood and lonely.
