Lesson Title: Addition and Subtraction

Grade Level: Kindergarten

Lesson Objectives:
Students will learn how to correctly identify the difference between addition and
subtraction
Students will get enough practice to easily complete the homework
Common Core Standard Addressed:
M.K.05 Students will demonstrate the meaning of addition and subtraction with whole numbers.
Use objects and words to explain addition as a joining action
Use objects and words to explain the meaning of addition as parts of a whole
Use objects and words to explain the meaning of subtraction as a separation action
Use objects and words to explain the meaning of subtraction as finding part of a whole
Use concrete and verbal representation to solve number stories
Suggested Materials/Technology/Resources:
White board and markers
Computer to view cartoon and jeopardy activity
Projector
Smartboard
Computer lab availability for video quiz
Lesson Procedures:
Begin the lesson by reviewing the symbols for addition and subtraction (+, -)
Cartoon #1 (symbols): http://www.toondoo.com/cartoon/10667513
Cartoon #2 (terms): http://www.toondoo.com/View.toon?param=10639242
Show how adding is the process of joining one number to another (provide numerical
and visual examples)
Show how subtraction is the process of taking one number away from another (provide
numerical and visual examples)
Practice: have students take turns coming up to the marker board to give us the answer
to an addition or subtraction fact that is provided by the teacher
Activity:
Following our lesson, I will put the students into groups of three to play a short game of
Jeopardy on the Smartboard. Instead of having five categories, there will be three different
categories: addition, subtraction, and random. There are only three so that it is not too lengthy
of a game and students will not get bored.

Closure:
Toward the end of class time, we will go to the computer lab and take two short quizzes to get a
little more addition and subtraction practice in. Here are the links to the quizzes:

Adaptations for students with Special Needs:

For our game of Jeopardy, I will pair students who are struggling with those who are at a
higher learning level.
For the video quiz, I and/or a para will sit with any students who are struggling and will
go through the quiz with them without giving them the answers.
Assignment:
For an assignment, the students will be given two take-home worksheets in order to get more
practice with their addition and subtraction facts. These worksheets will have 10 problems each.
By having a take-home assignment, this allows the students to see how well they know the
material on their own without having the teacher doing the work for them. Then, the following
day during math time, there will be time allotted for students to ask questions on any of the
problems that they struggled with and we will work them out as a class.
