1. For the air filled transmissions lines shown below calculate the input impedance and equivalent
inductance or capacitance when f = 6 GHz, Zo = 50 and l = 4.5 cm.
l
(a)
open
short
(b)
2. Suppose an air filled transmission line with a characteristic impedance of 50 ohms must have an
input capacitance of 2 pico farads when operated at 3 GHz. How long (shortest length) must the
transmission line be if it is (a) short circuited (b) open circuited?
3. A transmission line has the following per unit length parameters: L = 0.2 H/m, C = 300 pF/m,
(R=G=0).Calculate the propagation constant and characteristic impedance of the line at 500 MHz.
4. For a parallel-plate microstrip transmission line with a substrate thickness a = 0.0787 cm and r =
2.33, find all of the dimensions for a quarter wave transformer necessary to impedance match a Z0
= 50 transmission line to a 300 antenna at f = 2GHz.
5. A transmission line has an open circuit impedance of j150 and a short circuit impedance of
j33 . The length of the transmission line is l = 1.5m What is the (a) characteristic impedance of
the transmission line?
(b) propagation constant of the line?
6. A cable television has an input impedance of 75 . Suppose an uninformed Sophomore removes
a 1meter coaxial cable from his circuits lab at the university and uses it to connect from the wall
cable outlet to his television. The wall outlet is fed by a 75 transmission line coming from the
cable company. The government characteristic impedance of a cable is 50 . What percentage of
the available power is received by the television set tuned to channel 21, considering the fact that
there is a mismatch at the wall connection and at the television connection? Hint: Notice there are
2 mismatches, one when the signal goes into the 50 cable and another when the signal goes
into the television set from the 50 cable. You should multiply the two efficiency fractions
before multiplying by 100 %.
7. A 2m lossless air filled transmission line having a characteristic impedance 50 and generator
voltage Vg = 100 volts, is terminated with an impedance 45-j30 at an operating frequency of
260 MHz with a generator impedance of 25 . Find the
(a) input impedance
(b) input voltage
(c) Reflection coefficient at the generator
(d) Power delivered to the load.
(e) The transmission line voltage standing wave ratio (SWR).
