I.

History
The company was started by Edgar Sia II, a young enterprising architect, who
owned his first business at the age of twenty. Sia engaged in the food business
at twenty-six years of age, opening the first Mang Inasal branch in December
2003 at the Robinsons MallCarpark in Iloilo City. The restaurant was an instant
success, despite stiff competition from other, more established grilled-food
restaurants. The chain opened its first branches within the Visayan region, then
expanded to neighboring Mindanao to the south before spreading to Metro
Manila. Thereafter, the company started franchising in 2005. By 2008, Mang
Inasal had opened 23 restaurants, with ten being franchised. In October 2010,
70% of Mang Inasals branches were acquired by Jollibee Foods Corporation,
the largest Philippine food chain company, for 3 billion ($68.8 million). As of
March 2014, the chain has grown to about 460 stores. The man behind Mang
Inasal Sia recently received the Urban Leadership Award from the Canadian
Urban Institute (CUI) Edgar Injap Sia II is the man behind Mang Inasal, one of
the fastest growing food companies in the Philippines, which has become a
modern icon of the Ilonggo culinary culture. His parents gave his the nickname
Injap because Sia is originally from China while Jaruda, his mothers name, is
originally from Japan. Injap stands for Intsik-Japan. His parents are
businesspersons and it was expected that he take up some business-related
course in college. He took up Architecture instead. Sias first taste of running a
business was when he was 20 years old. It was at the Four-Season Hotel,
followed by Mister Labada, a Laundromat, then Injap Color Express, a photo
developing shop. All these are based in Iloilo. Then, he cooked up the idea of

operating Mang Inasal, the specialty of which, is grilled chicken. It opened on

Programs
MANG INASAL CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
In cognizance of the public support for and acceptance of the business, Mang
Inasal Philippines is committed to play back a substantial portion of its ROI to the
community in which the business is situated. For more than 6 years since its
foundation, the company is visible in its contributions to charitable institutions,
religious organizations, socio-civic clubs, educational institution, LGUs, sports
activities, myriad of competitions both local and national levels, professional
conferences, artistic endeavours of varied disciplines and the traditional Mang
Inasal Missions. Consider these as expressions of generosity or civic
consciousness but if one has to cut through the heart of the business
organization, what is laid bare before him is the beating heart of social
responsibility. Mang Inasal will continue to nurture a grateful relationship with the

general public. It concretely contributes to the alleviation of the unemployment


burden of the Philippines and spurs economic activities through its suppliers and
service providers in every branch of the company.
9 Social Responsibility Program of Mang Inasal
Massive Reforestation- Since 2008, in partnership with E-cube International,
the company is engaged in massive reforestation project initially in the island of
Guimaras and after2010 in strategic sites in Panay.
Funds For Children Care Institutions- As financial resources would allow the
company contributed amounts for ABS-CBN BANTAY BATA Foundation, SOS
Children Village in Zarraga, Iloilo as well as numerous orphanages and homes
for the elderly.
Assistance For Persons With Disabilities- Pursuant to its commitment, the
company entered into a memorandum of agreement with ALDEARS, the local
association of persons with disabilities for employment of qualified members. The
company also serve as a major sponsor in their annual affairs.
Awareness Raising Partnerships- The company has consistently partnered
with government agencies and non-government organizations in various
advocacies such as prevention of foot and mouth disease, dengue eradication
drive, nutrition month activities, fire prevention seminars, disaster awareness
programs.
Sponsor Of Sports And Cultural Activities- In its bid to promote tourism and
wholesome recreational/sports activities, the company is annually sponsoring
Dinagyang tribes and projects of Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation. Myriad of sports
activities and cultural programs nationwide had been recipient of Mang
Inasal sponsorship. In 2008, the company maintained a basketball team, Mang
Inasal Warriors, as its contribution to the basket league of the country.

Calamities Relief Operations- Mang Inasal made substantial contributions


to victims of calamities nationwide: typhoon, flood and fire.
Economic Development Of Communities- Barangays of Maasin, Iloilo must
have felt the demands of bamboo growers in the area for increased output of
bamboo skewers as Mang Inasal expands nationwide. More and more citizens
in the barangays are provided with gainful employment as a result of the
expansion. This is not true only among bamboo growers but banana growers in
other towns of the province have wisnessed the resurrection of the banana
leaves business ( Consider before as a sunset enterprise) since this material is
an important component in Mang Inasal food presentation.
Assistance To Small And Medium Entrepreneurs Of Western Visayas- Since
marketing of their products is in major stumbling block for many small
entrepreneurs, the company established a pasalubong shop that show cases the
major suppliers of pasalubong in Iloilo and Guimaras charging them with meagre
amount from their gross sales and the rest of the expenses are borne by the
company.
Medical/Dental Mission- In various occasions, the company in partnership with
the local chapters of Philippine Dental Association conduct medical/dental
mission for indigent families of the city.
