Critical Analysis

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is analyzed. It explores the themes of wealth, moral decay, and the corruption of the American Dream in the 1920s. The story follows Jay Gatsby, a self-made millionaire, as he tries to win back his lost love Daisy through his acquired wealth. However, the novel depicts how greed, dishonesty, and a focus on status ultimately lead to Gatsby's unjust death. It serves as a critique of the excesses and shallow values of the 1920s American society through its examination of the characters and symbolic locations in the story.

The Great Gatsby

by: F. Scott Key Fitzgerald written in 1925

(Critical Analysis)
At first, I was curious about the word Gatsby because to be honest I am not
familiar to this novel, until I research, read and watched the movie adaptation of
this literary piece by F. Scott Key Fitzgerald. I watched the movie trailer of this, and
the trailer is a bit boring. I read the summary of the novel and yes, it is interesting,
after reading the summary, of course I decided to watch the movie, well it is
because it can help me to understand further the story and for me to not imagine
the characters and the happenings in the story, after I watch the movie I just then
realized that F. Scott Key Fitzgerald was so good writer, his literary piece (referring
to The Great Gatsby), the symbolism and the message that the author wants to
convey was great.
F. Scott Key Fitzgerald is comparable to Jay Gatsby, a man who idolized
wealth, rich people and enlisted in the army and fall in love with a young woman
(Zelda/Daisy). Nick Carraway depicts also the personality of the author a thoughtful
man, and Nick is also a writer/Bond businessman, Biographical and Psychological
Criticism was used within this character. In addition, Daisy Buchanan is partially
comparable to Zelda the wife of the author, both Daisy and Zelda is in love with
wealth and money. Marxist Criticism or Sociological Criticism was highlighted in the
story, in this era (1920 the jazz age) as I research about the happenings in this year;
I found out that the American economy soared, bringing unprecedented levels of
prosperity to the nation, American moral and values decayed, and prohibitions and
banning of alcoholic drinks, thats why if you notice in the movie there are
Bootleggers wherein one of them, Meyer Wolfshiem partnered with Jay Gatsby, the
demand of bootleggers sored since the prohibition or banning of selling alcoholic
drinks occurred, and I can tell that this is the reason why they are millionaire. Social
status was also emphasized here, When Gatsby fall in love with Daisy, he lied to
her, he said that hes from a wealthy family, but the truth is that he came from a
poor family, and was born in North Dakota, also Jay Gatsbys real name is James
Gatz, He is totally dishonest. Going back to the social status regarding the novel, I
asked myself So if youre a poor people you dont have the rights to love rich
people? I mean you need to be rich to be able to love the rich people too and also
if you take a look in the place I mean the hometown of the characters, social status
also conveyed here, in my opinion the people who live in The Valley of ashes are
poor people, George Wilson, Myrtle, while in the east and west egg are the rich
people, but If you analyze it, the valley of ashes also symbolizes the American moral
and values decayed, since ashes can describe as dirty and also decay.
Gatsbys dreaming of Daisy is like achieving the American dream, the
prosperity, justice etc. Gatsby used the wealth, the money, the fame to win daisy
but in the end Gatsby gone dead (killed by Wilson), just like the American dream,
because of wealth, money, carelessness, selfishness, the American dream

corrupted. Also In my observation, the death of Jay Gatsby is unjust because all the
blame takes on him, I pity him so much.
